Hi all,

I posted a few days ago looking for a B name due to family connections. It's not essential that the name begins with B but DH and I agree that if we can find one we both love we will go for it. We are still not sure about a boys name but we both really love Bryony and Briar. I also like Bronwyn/en.

Can I get some opinions on these names? Which do you like best? I had never seen Bryony spelt Briany. I liked it at first but DH has pointed out that it just makes the name look like a female version of Brian which it isn't.

Other suggestions are also welcome, doesn't have to be B but what names may I like if I like these names?

Bryony is lovely Briany does look like Brian with a y on and the name Brian reminds me of family guy ...

Bowlersarm · 04/07/2014 17:39

Much prefer Bryony or Bryony. That name would suit a variety of babies/girls/women.

Bronwen is a bit frumpy to my ears. Along the lines of Gladys and Gertrude.

Bowlersarm · 04/07/2014 17:40

Second one was supposed to be Briony!

CuppaHorlix · 04/07/2014 17:43

Mumof3xox that is my fear, that people will always associate the name with Brian no matter how it is spelt. I used to work with a Bryony and people would call her Brian in the "Stewie" voice..." Briiiiian"

I think it's a lovely name and I don't think of it as a female Brian but I know a lot of people do.

Bowlersarm my DH said the same thing that it sounds a bit tough. I quite like strong girls names (I love Reese, Brooke, names like that) but DH prefers "girlier" names

Brooke and Reese are both lovely to

I wouldn't call a bryony - Brian fwiw!

Mumof3xox · 04/07/2014 17:47

How about Brianna?

Mumof3xox · 04/07/2014 17:48

Or Aubrey : Aubree shortened to Bree?

fanjodisfunction · 04/07/2014 17:49

I know a briony shes six and is never called brian or associated nn.

fanjodisfunction · 04/07/2014 17:51

Its a flower name bryony, not assciated with brian at all for me.

strawberryyDaiquiri · 04/07/2014 17:53

I also love Bryony but was at school with one and everyone called her Bryon or Byron. I don't associate it with Brian but unfortunately some people do. I think it's lovely though but would chose Bryony not Briony just to avoid the Brian thing even more!

Briar is also lovely. Not keen on Bronwen

CuppaHorlix · 04/07/2014 18:07

ooh it's a tough one .DH and I love it but I don't want her to get called Brian/Bryon at school! Not even keen on Bry as a nickname..

Mumof3 we did consider Brianna actually..DH said it's too "American" but whenever I hear it I think of Bree from Desperate Housewives who was all sorts of fabulous lol

I love Briar

burgatroyd · 04/07/2014 20:07

I knew a gorgeous girl called Bryony. Never did I think Brian. I loved her name because she was so delish! Think Eva Green.

funnyoldonion · 04/07/2014 20:39

I went to school with a Bryony and I've never thought Brian in my life! How about Blythe and someone mentioned Briar that's beautiful!

GreatAuntDinah · 06/07/2014 09:38

My sister is Bryony. I think it's a beautiful name, but her NN is biriani Grin Bronwyn is frumpy.

BlueThursday · 06/07/2014 13:21

Bryony is on my list so a thumbs up from me on that. I also have Bronagh - would that work?

Amybabygypsyqueen · 06/07/2014 14:53

I have a bryony she's six her bf calls her Brian after my daughter got her name wrong a lot. No one else does she gets all bry a lot and biriyani by her dad it suits her beautifully

Pebbles0934 · 06/07/2014 20:02

I really like Bronwyn. I think it's really nice and Bronny is a nice nn.

How about Bethany? Bliss? Blossom?

ItWasMyOwnSilence · 06/07/2014 20:19

Bethan?

ProfYaffle · 06/07/2014 20:27

I'm not keen on Briar because it's a weedy, thorny, not very nice plant. Although this view is probably heavily influenced by teenage reading of William Blake "Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds and binding with briars my joys and desires"

ashesandfire · 06/07/2014 20:31

Briany looks wrong to me, definitely like Brian with a y! Bryony is lovely. I also like Briar and Brooke. I adore Bethany but I am biased...

HolgerDanske · 06/07/2014 20:34

Bryony is a lovely name. Briany is just a misspelling.

HolgerDanske · 06/07/2014 20:34

I like Bianca.

But I also like bronwyn.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/07/2014 22:34

It's Bronwen not Bronwyn. Wyn - male, wen - female.

I really don't like Bryony.

Briar or Bronwen are the better of the names.

nooka · 06/07/2014 22:37

Briar to me is a boys name. I like Brianna. I don't think of it as American, I think it has Irish roots?

I don't really like Bryony or it's variants, and Bronwyn to me is very Welsh (not that that is a problem, but my minds eye Bronywn would be a no nonsense Welsh mum - although I could be muddling it with Blodwyn)
