Boys name short list

Hedgehog1977 · 01/07/2014 12:24

We have a girls’ name all sorted, but still debating a boys’ name. We’ve whittled it down to a shortlist:

Patrick (my favourite, a family name, but DH likes the least)

Arthur (a new favourite, but worried it’s going to shoot up in popularity)

Clement (really like this, but my boss has a baby grandson with the name and I’m worried that as it’s so unusual they will think we’ve copied, and people will talk about us at work, even though it’s been on our shortlist the whole time we’ve been ttc – 4 years!)

Seamus (we have Irish background and lived there for 5 years, but a couple of people I’ve mentioned it to think it’s strange and too Irish for an English baby)

Gilbert (love Gil as a nickname, but not so much Bert/Bertie, which is putting me off)

Any thoughts on these? Or any similar names we may not have thought of? Names we have had to discount are Gabriel and Reuben (others in the family) and Ambrose (love it, but think it’s a bit too strange). So we like names that people have heard of, but not too common and a little bit old fashioned.

Patrick. too bad you can't use Gabriel, love gabe as a nn

Bowlersarm · 01/07/2014 12:51

Auberon
Stanley
Sydney
Herbert
Ralph
Asa
Wilfred

I prefer Patrick from your list but Pat would worry me.

RiverTam · 01/07/2014 12:53

I think I like Clement best. I like Patrick but loathe Pat, and really don't like Gilbert/Gil.

flowerpowers · 01/07/2014 15:10

Love Clement - cool, classic and not overused!

I also like Reuben or how about Quentin or Cassius?

Rhubarbgarden · 01/07/2014 15:13

I like Ambrose or Arthur. Not keen on the others. How about Wilbur?

rachel234 · 01/07/2014 15:18

Another vote for Clement. Ambrose is also a great name!

Not so keen on the others, sorry.

gymboywalton · 01/07/2014 15:21

patrick is the only one i would use.

what about laurence?

squoosh · 01/07/2014 15:21

I can't believe anyone would say Ambrose is a great name. Ambrose!

Clement is acceptable, but only under the proviso he'd be known as Clem day to day.

Seamus is my favourite from your list.

Gilbert is unspeakable (sorry Gilbert Blythe, love you just not your name)

rachel234 · 01/07/2014 15:29

I know a lovely Ambrose, sometimes shortened to Brody - never thought it being an odd name?!

Seamus, on the other hand, sounds odd and unusual to my ears. I'm not even sure how to pronounce it.

Vijac · 01/07/2014 15:38

Best is Arthur then Patrick IMO. How about Solomon or Theodore or Dermott

gymboywalton · 01/07/2014 15:38

you pronounce it shaymus

turdfairynomore · 01/07/2014 15:41

I love Seamus. But then I'm from NI so know a few of them. It's anglicised form is James I think? And I like paidraig for Patrick too.

Nereida · 01/07/2014 16:14

My vote goes to Clement.

Legionofboom · 01/07/2014 16:30

If you both really like Clement then I think it would be a shame to not use it because your boss has a grandson of the same name. Any office talk about it would only last a few days surely.

I like Seamus best from your list. Not keen on Patrick or Gilbert.

itsnothingoriginal · 01/07/2014 16:33

Gilbert - love it! Definitely my favourite from your list.

Love Patrick, Seamus and Arthur. Quite like Gilbert.

How about:

Wilbur
Sean
Ethan
Rowan
Niall
Nathaniel

?

Frikadellen · 01/07/2014 16:47

Take Patrick out if dh isnt keen imo..

Arthur I think Arthur has peaked and will go down from now. Its a lovely name.

Clement Really love this and no I dont think your boss grandson will be a issue. Teacher at my kids school named their dd my dd3s name and actually asked me if I minded adding they had Irish in the family. I was like they are unlikely to ever meet (and never have 5 years on) so no issue from me) So no wouldnt get hung up on that..

Seamus Great name and my favourite from your list..

Gilbert If Bertie puts you off perhaps re consider but I do think its a good name..

Love almost all of your name choices (not keen on Patrick but because in Danish - where I am from- Pat that most gets called translates to English as tit and I just cant get past that)

Hedgehog1977 · 01/07/2014 18:05

Thank you for all of the replies, I'm not sure I'm any closer Grin

Pat didn't occur to me actually, all of the Patricks in our family have been Paddy, but I don't like Pat really. DH likes Patrick, it's just bottom of the five for him.

I'm definitely going towards Clement a lot now, very pleased it has had a reasonably good reaction! I'm sure everyone at work will get over it and it will give them something to gossip about...

Really liking Rowan and Laurence too. I think whatever we pick will be a compromise name as none of them seem perfect like our girls' name (which is Sylvie). Ooh, Theodore is nice too.

Brody is a good shortening for Ambrose, I never considered that before Rachel. Still loving Arthur, I might see where it is in the top 100 in August.

No clearer, but thanks for all of the comments! I'm glad that none of them inspired universal dislike! I think I might just write the short list and let DH pick on the day.

Gilbert or Arthur

Don't like Clement or Seamus, sorry.

Toadsrevisited · 01/07/2014 19:54

Aubrey?
Evelyn?
Humphrey?
Wilfred?

Maleducada · 01/07/2014 19:55

Patrick

the others are all a bit weird.

almapudden · 01/07/2014 20:07

I love Clement and like Gilbert. I'm not keen on Irish names so I wouldn't go for Seamus and Patrick, but that's just a personal thing. Arthur is nice but quite common these days.

NanaNina · 01/07/2014 20:36

Leo or Finlay?

Yorkshirelassreturns · 03/07/2014 20:48

Of your list, I'd go with Arthur. Friends who have similar taste in names have boys named Wilbur, and Sidney- love baby Sid- on him it's the coolest name. Congrats! X
