Cressida?

I'm an avid reader of this forum as I (like many others on here) love discussing baby names but this name is baffling me.

Before Prince Harry dated a girl named Cressida it was rarely suggested as a baby name. Now it pops up on every girl's name thread on here? It will be associated with C Bonas (I think that's her name?) so I just don't get its sudden popularity. Is it because it's a 'fresh' name or do people genuinely like it? For those who like it - have you always liked it or is it a recent thing?

I'm so curious about this.

I've been toying with it for bump but don't think I could go through with it.

It's a lovely name but as you say there'd be an association and there's constant shouts of her having a horribly pretentious name that I would t want to lumber my daughter with

Dollydowser · 30/06/2014 20:22

The only Cressida I have heard of before Harry's girlfriend was a character in Viz. Vaire posh.

thatstoast · 30/06/2014 20:25

I love the way it sounds. I can't say I was very aware of it before Cressida Bonas hit the papers. I would never call a daughter that because we live in a staunchly working class area.

Fun Fact: There were 9 Cressidas born in 2012.

fanjodisfunction · 30/06/2014 20:26

Always associated with shakespeare for me and a girl I went to college with. Lovely name, wou, d love to use it myself. Not sure dh would go for it though.

Cardinal · 30/06/2014 20:26

I think it's beautiful.

Don't like it all at.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/06/2014 21:31

How is it pronounced?

Cress-id-ah

Or

Creh-see-da

Lizzardface · 30/06/2014 21:43

I love the name Cressida. Beautiful, elegant and 'cool'.

Lizzardface · 30/06/2014 21:43

Also love the nn Cress.

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2014 21:46

I've always known of it, probably because of Shakespeare.

I think it's a beautiful name, unusual & classy.

It's pronounced CRESS-i-da.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/06/2014 21:48

Thanks Drama, like my first attempt at writing it phonetically. I like it more that way.

MilkandCereal · 30/06/2014 21:49

It's ghastly IMHO.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 30/06/2014 21:50

I have a friend called Cressida. I don't think it's that unusual

looki · 30/06/2014 21:59

Maybe I need to clarify, I know its not a 'new' name. I'm aware of the Shakespeare reference but whether someone personally knows somebody with the name or not, it is a fairly unusual name ie its not one that you come across on a daily basis. Its not in the same league as Imogen for instance.

I'm not sure f I like it. Its ok as a name that has grown on me as its in the gossip pages so frequently these days but the nn Cressie reminds me of the nn Chrissie which is ghastly imo.

My point however is that before of its association with Prince Harry, it was never suggested as a possible girl's name. In recent threads looking for suggestions its appearing very regularly so my question was is it due to Prince Harry/Cressida? IMO this has to be the reason?

Think your right, but people dont realise that thats where they have heard it before. Its just said alot more in the news which filters through, I think.

AuntieStella · 30/06/2014 22:58

My first association was to the senior police officer Cressida Dick.

ancientbuchanan · 30/06/2014 23:02

I love it, and Cressy as nn.

Just think it's a shame it will now be associated with rich Harry fans.

badtime · 30/06/2014 23:18

Perhaps many people just hadn't heard it before Harry was seeing someone with that name, and now they have heard it. How they heard it isn't really relevant.

I know it mainly as Tarquin and Guinevere's mum from 'The Modern Parents' in Viz. Consequently, I can't really take it seriously.

looki · 30/06/2014 23:24

Yes thats probably it.

I was wondering if I was the only one who didn't view it as a 'familiar' name.

Its nice to see different name suggestions appear. Oddly Chelsy never had the same effect.

Cressida is beautiful, classic and timeless.

murphys · 01/07/2014 15:20

We used to have a Toyota Cressida car. So for that reason I don't think I could call my child that name.

squoosh · 01/07/2014 15:22

I haven't noticed it being mentioned much.

I don't like it though, it's comedy posh to me.

CruCru · 01/07/2014 19:29

I know one Cressida. She is about 30 I think.

idontlikealdi · 01/07/2014 19:33

Cressida Dick was chief of the met police or something like that.

I love the name, although not with Dick or Bonas as a surname!
