Not finding out the sex of bump so hoping for opinions on two lists please:

Girls:

Belle
April
May
Zelda
Maya/Maia
Destiny (worried this could be a bit of a marmite name)
Esmeralda, ( Possibly more a middle name)

Boys:

Deano
Zayden
Jay
Jamal, ( is this acceptable as we are both white British ?)
Zack

I realize a lot of these names are either "love or hate," so honestly won't be offended by honesty.

I don't like Zara, I don't like the "ar," sound, i know i'm being fussy. I do quite like Zella, but I have a feeling I'm completely alone in that lol.

At the moment i'm thinking either:

April Zelda
April Esmeralda
April Esme
Zelda April
Zelda Esme or
Zella Destiny

Boys I see could be more of a problem. Particuarly determined to love the first name if it's a boy, given the middle name will be so awful

Girls:

Belle: beauty and the beast is the first thing I think of. Don't know if that's a positive or negative but it has strong associations for me.

April: is she going to be born in April (obv no if I think about it as you wouldn't be pregnant yet! Lol) so I'd say no based on that to be honest.

May: dull as ditch water.

Zelda: warrior princess. Not an association I'd want.

Maya/Maia: quite nice but not lovely.

Destiny: sorry but this is a strippers name.

Esmeralda: I think it's a bit too much if that makes sense. What about Esme? I think it's less fussy.

Boys:

Deano: God no. Please don't. Not unless you're giving birth to a 19 year old lad who's going to go straight from the maternity ward to halls at Leeds University where by day he studies geography and by night he works in a Vodka Revs. If I've not made this clear enough already: no, no, a thousand times no. It is not a real name.

Zayden: not my cup of tea but not offensive.

Jay: for me the associations with The Inbetweeners are too strong. Aside from that I think it's a bit boring.

Jamal: I do think it's quite culturally specific. It's up to you as to whether that's an issue but DH and I vetoed a few nice names just because they felt too Asian or Celtic or French and we are not so it didn't "feel" right to us. Completely your choice though.

Zack: in my opinion the best name on your list. Like.

April is nice. Belle is nice. May is nice. Maya is quite nice.
Esmeralda?! Not very nice. Girl from hunchback of notre dame.
Zelda? Witch name or the computer game.
Destiny?!!!!!! Horrible.

I don't like any of the boys names except Zack is ok.

How about Zeta for a girl? I went to school with a girl called Zee.

Was Barry his full name? Did he have a better middle or surname you could use?

Report
scatterpuss92 · 24/06/2014 15:01

I'm beginning to prefer Zayden Barry, or possibly Zachary Barry, but it is proving difficult choosing how to spell Zayden as there seems to be no standardized spelling

His surname is my husbands, mine and will be bumps surname, and he didn't have a middle name so we are stuck with Barry unfortunately. I cannot change it to "Harry," as that is the name of my husbands five year old brother.

How about barnaby instead for middle name?

Or barnabus

You could have a look at this list of Z names from Nameberry.

I've never heard of half of them.

Please don't use Zella Destiny - it sounds like sell her destiny Confused

I second Deano Barry!

Nereida · 24/06/2014 15:32

OP I like Zella!

From your list I'd go with Zelda or Maia for a girl (don't like the Maya spelling as much), and Zack for a boy but I would put Zachary on the bc.

Belle - quite like it. Prefer Bella
April - really like it
May - not keen, it's too much of a middle name to me
Zelda - quite like it. Prefer Zella, Zillah or Zia.
Maya/Maia - like both
Destiny - don't like this
Esmeralda - quite like it
Billie - quite like it but I think it needs a full name too (though not sure what that would be.)

Deano - don't like it
Zayden - kind of cool. Never heard it before
Jay - quite like it but, like Billie, I think it needs a longer name
Jamal - I like it. I dod htink it would be odd as you are both White British but I don't know why I feel like that. I wouldn't think it was odd if a Turkish Muslim couple called their child Liam for example.
Zack - love it.

Barry \b(ar)-ry\ as a boy's name (also used as girl's name Barry), is pronounced BARE-ee. It is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and the meaning of Barry is "fair-haired". Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic name Barra, from Bairre (Old Irish), a short form of "fionnbharr", meaning "fair-haired" (see Finbar). Also possibly from Bearach (Irish, Gaelic) "spear; sharp, pointed". Saint Bairre (seventh century) founded a monastery that became the city of Cork in Ireland.

How about Bairre? or Finbar? Or Barret?

(Just thinking outside the box!)

Or Berry for a girl? Close to Barry.

I'm not sure there is a correct spelling for Zayden/Zaiden. I think it comes from Zaide? Or some say it is a made up American name?

Zachary is nice.

Deano Barry is a brilliant name!

I do like Zeta, actually. Or Zena.

BlueStarsAtNight · 24/06/2014 16:27

If you have to have Barry then Zachary Barry is definitely the nicest you have considered.

I really like Zia, that or Zoe would be my choice if you want a Z name for a girl.

April Esme is also nice.

My favs are Maya and Zack (though would probably go for Zachary).

Zane for a boy is quite nice too.

There's Zoe or Zola for a girl?

I love Barry!!!!!

MerryMarigold · 24/06/2014 22:29

Zane sounds like zaney. Zain is a Muslim name so round here they are two-a-penny but maybe more unusual where you are. I know what you mean. I wanted an x name for ds1. I was desperate for Xavier for a boy. I was just thinking of the bank card Mr X Marigold. Lovely!

Again Zaina is a Muslim name too, but that's no different I guess from giving a biblical name when you are not Christian. How about Layla?
