Boys names

We found out were having a boy yesterday :D

Only problem is that while we had our perfect girls name, we can't find a boys name were both 100% on.

We both like Max(imus) but I don't want to settle... and wish there was something a little more perfect out there.

We're extremely picky as a couple so I apologise if we hate all suggestions!

Our list consists of:

Max(imus)
Michael (only as it's a family name, I'm not that keen)
John (my dad's name but dps only cousins name so might be a bit weird)
Cohen (Terry prachett fans)
Jared

Currently I'm really Into Abel (we're watching sons of anarchy atm), it's been gradually growing on me, but dp says he's not keen.

Names that have been vetoed or are too similar to family:

Jacob
Caleb
Luke
isaac
Elliot
Rowan
Ralph
David
Edward
Elijah
Ivor/Ivan
Franklin
James
C/jasper
Cassian
Alex
Toby

Odin (dp... sigh)
Loki (again dp)
Titus (noooo)

Thanks in advance!

I like Max it was on my boy shortlist too and so was Franklin.Cohen and Jared are the ones I like the most from your list.

Gregory Hugo was the favourite combo for a boy if those are any good? but I'm having a girl. What was your girls name so we can see if that gives us any more ideas?

longestlurkerever · 20/06/2014 13:59

OP are you me? I like a lot on your vetoed list but they are out for similar reasons, and I am sure dh has suggested Odin and Thor. I am still after that elusive boy's name (have just started a thread about Keir) but others on my vetoed/taken list include Henry, Rex, Ben and (possibly) Theo. Out of your actual shortlist I guess I like Max best but prefer Rex. John and Michael are good names as well actually, but maybe a tiny bit dated now?

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 14:00

I kind of like Gregory but I don't like Greg which kind of rules it out :p

The girls name we had was Liliana, It wasn't my favourite but it was our favourite and felt right if that makes sense? The other girls ones we had were Beatrice, Lydia, Libby and at one point Juliet.

I like Max. Maybe Maxian rather than Maximus?

Maxian Odin Jared
Maxian Jared Micheal
Maxian Jared Cohen
Maxian John Cohen

Cerealaddict · 20/06/2014 14:03

Watch your favourite films again, names will pop up all over the place, get an ap or write them down to fav them. Our favourites boy list were

Kyle
Reese
Connor

Hb likes the terminator films, we decided on name about 4 wks after we round out and we opted for Connor but spelt the proper irish way in the end Conor.

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 14:03

I like Rex too! And my great granpa was Reginald with Rex for short but dp says no :(

I thought Maximus would satisfy both of us as I like Max and the 'imus' bit seems to suit his other suggestions :p

I would like Theo but I went to school with a really ugly one :p

Love Cohen! Very cool

mrsnec · 20/06/2014 14:09

Yes that makes plenty of sense as that's where we were with Gregory but I agree with you on that one! It was almost by default as it fit my criteria perfectly! Which was, Greek origin but English sounding, nice meaning and not too biblical and used in other European countries too. I used that for girls names as well.

I like Theo, and Dominic too on that basis. And for some reason on either gender I'm not worried about a name being dated. But I've always been a fan of all things retro!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 20/06/2014 14:11

Oh I was going to suggest Rex!

What about:

Leonard/Leo
Lawrence
Otis
Flynn
Fergus
Peter
Alexander

mrsnec · 20/06/2014 14:13

Is Maxwell any better?

Yes we did that with films too. I couldn't get Clarence or Alabama past dh lol!

Both big House fans which was another vote for Gregory and my dh had Dana on his list! For girls I vetoed that one but I've known people use Fox as a boys middle name!

Artandco · 20/06/2014 14:17

What about Magnus also

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 14:23

Oh and I forgot Oliver and Oscar (also vetoed by dp!).

I like Fergus and Leo but again vetoed by dp... He is so so picky and doesn't have many ideas himself.

Maxwell is a close friends surname and I think if we have Max he will definitely be Maximus to appease dps greek/roman/norse thing.

BlueChampagne · 20/06/2014 14:50

Would you go for Terence/Terry to honour Mr Pratchett himself? Otherwise, what about Conrad? Also like Max and Jared.

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 15:42

No don't like Terry/ Terence sorry!

bouncingbelle · 20/06/2014 15:49

Mannix
Jonah
Soren
Jenson
Eric
Lars
Stefan
Struan

(Not saying I like all these names myself, just suggestions! Grin )

MsCoconut · 20/06/2014 15:49

I quite like Max. Jared too.

However, if you are brave (for some of them more than others) below is a list of Scandi/Greek/roman names to see if if any grab you.

Scandi names: Magnus, Axel

From Greek mythology: Hector, Ares, Hercules, Apollo, Demeter, Adonis, Dionysus, Jason, Nike (yes, like the trainers), Argo/Argus, Ajax

Roman empires: Claudius/Claudio,
Augustus/Augustine, Julius/Julian, Aurelius/Aurelio, Caesar, Tiberius, Alexander, Marcus/Marco

PomPomPingPong · 20/06/2014 15:57

Elias

mrsnec · 20/06/2014 16:06

I like the scandanavian names. And Fergus and Flynn too. Hope you can get him on board with some of these suggestions.

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 17:09

I think I like Axel but I don't think I'm brave enough :p

I think I've sent you all up the wrong tree, dp likes roman/ norse/ Greek names... I don't particularly I like different names from different genres???

My faves are Isaac, Luke, Rowan, Jacob, Ivor and Alex (unfortunately that's my name hehe) But not usable unfortunately :(

florascotia · 20/06/2014 17:35

Nike was a Greek GODDESS (of victory) , so name not suitable for a boy

Maximus means 'the biggest'. Will this suit your baby as he grows up (congratulations, by the way)? NO offence intended, but would it be a suitable name for a person of average height or very slender build, for example?

fuzzpig · 20/06/2014 17:37

Tristan
Xander
Elias
Jonah
Josiah

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 20/06/2014 17:43

Troy Grin

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 17:51

He could be either :p I am only 5 ft 1 1/2 but the men in my mum's side of the family and my brother are all over 6 ft. DP is 6 ft 3 (I think) and very broad.

OP posts:
mrsnec · 20/06/2014 18:18

Maybe then it's about getting him round to your way of thinking if we're not on the right track. You have a fairly good idea of names you like its more about persuading him!

I had this problem with dh and the fact that I wanted to use my dgm's name as a middle name but he hates it. I got a suggestion on here for an alternative which is just the first syllable of the name he doesn't like but another name in itself. He hasn't twigged the connection yet it's close enough for me. Just wondering if a similar approach would work.

Run the suggestions on here past him and see what he says.

Alita7 · 20/06/2014 18:41

I do really like names with an x or z sound ( but not zac)... so maybe Max as discussed... Rex and Alex not possible. I like Jax but would have to be short for Jackson or Jaxon which surprise surprise dp doesn't like.
I will ask him about Axel, though I think various family members would faint!
