Kaiser....?

Stumbled across this at work (don't ask). Someone from that MTV show Teen Mom has announced her new child will be called Kaiser.

Is it me or... no. Just - no.

Not meaning to be snobby, but Kaiser just isn't a name, is it?

Wow, she obviously has aspirations for her newborn!

Heart surgeon or human rights lawyer won't suffice for this ambitious mother, nothing less than Emperor will do.

ooerrmissus · 11/06/2014 11:04

Good grief.

Knackeredmum13 · 11/06/2014 11:11

I know someone with that name though pronounced Kayzer. It's an Indian name I believe.

Thurlow · 11/06/2014 11:12

I was wondering whether she knew what it meant? Not in a nasty way but if she's American, she probably didn't spend a term of secondary school doing WW1 and learning about Kaiser Willhelm!

It just makes me think about 'Joseph Stalin' in Friends... Grin

Wonder if she was thinking of the Keyser Soze character in The Usual Suspects?

forago · 11/06/2014 11:58

Yes it's an Indian name - I know someone with the name spelt Qaiser but pronounced as Kaiser, he is British Indian. I like the way it sounds.

daphnehoneybutt · 11/06/2014 12:04

Oh yes Jenelle off of Teen Mom.

I just think of Kaiser Wilhelm! If you were not Indian you would look like some mad German nationalist. I would assume you had a Nazi shrine in your house.

squoosh · 11/06/2014 12:05

Oh no, has Jenelle had another child?

Her life is a car crash.

VeloWoman · 11/06/2014 12:09

Kaiser does not have nazi implications but it is still a very unusual choice.

I suspect she does not even know who Kaiser Wilhelm was or his role in WW1.

Thurlow · 11/06/2014 12:10

It is indeed Jenelle! An article came up about her divorce and mentioned they were naming the child Kaiser.

I think it's the spelling, rather than the name...

Oh dear

Chocotrekkie · 11/06/2014 12:12

Was I the only one who's first thought was the band kaiser chiefs. uneducated me

fledermaus · 11/06/2014 12:14

Maybe her next could be Czar?

I do really like the girls' name Kajsa though which sounds similar.

threepiecesuite · 11/06/2014 12:15

I thought Kaiser Chiefs too.
Several staffy-type horrible dogs on our estate are called Kaiser. So, er, it's not something I'd choose.

squoosh · 11/06/2014 12:16

Her first son is called Jace. For ages I thought it was short for Jason but apparently it's just Jace.

Thurlow · 11/06/2014 12:22

Jace & Kaiser sounds like some sort of alt-rock band.

Jace is ok though actually.

My swedish boss has a girl Caisa (pronounced Kaiser), it is not considered odd here (norway)

napoleonsnose · 11/06/2014 12:39

I know someone who had a German Shepherd called Kaiser.

SmashleyHop · 11/06/2014 12:42

Kaiser is a name of a hospital and insurance company in the states. I hated working with Kaiser- the name just puts me on edge.

Nereida · 11/06/2014 13:20

I know someone who has a two year old Kaiser who goes by the nickname Kai.

coffeeinbed · 11/06/2014 17:24

Just when you think you've heard it all...

florascotia · 11/06/2014 18:21

Kaiser is a title (as earlier poster have said). Bit like calling a baby King or (direct translation) Caesar. However, I have just come across this link which shows they also had some pretty way-out names in the past. I love the idea of calling a baby 'Photo' in the 1860s, presumably in homage to the very latest new technology:
www.britishbabynames.com/blog/uncommon-and-unusual/

The site is a blog so entries change; I'm referring to a list called 'Finds from 1866', posted 3/6/2014. As well as 'Photo', there is also a baby Goliath, an Obedience and a Leviathan.

MsVenus · 11/06/2014 19:27

It seems to be a cross cultural name with origins in the German & Arabic languages. In Arabic the name Qaiser, is pronounced as Qoyser with an emphasis on the s sound rather than the z of Kaiser.

florascotia · 11/06/2014 20:30

The origin of the both the German and Arabic names is the Latin title Caesar = emperor (approx). Russian Tsar/Czar has the same origins.

Caesar (the Romans said: Kai-sahr) was originally a Roman family name. It probably meant 'hairy'.

alemci · 11/06/2014 22:24

I have come across Khizzer and Qasir.

Not keen on Kaiser and remember doing Franco Prussian history as part of A level history.
