What do you think of our girl's name?

Not sure I dare ask this as my OH is so set on it but I'm currently 8 days overdue and curious to know what people think of our girl's name, which we've deliberated over for months.

Names we've discounted for one reason or another include Iris, Matilda, Esther and Eva. The name we both love is Mabel although I do have my doubts about how this will suit different ages. We struggled for a suitable middle name until, in a last ditch effort, we came across the name Wynn.

So if we have a girl her name will be Mabel Wynn, which means 'lovable friend'. This would be to go with our little girl, Martha Beatrice, whose name means 'lady who brings happiness'.

Carefully considered thoughts welcomed please.

Thanks.

I am not keen on Mabel but I think I'm in the minority and it's getting more popular. My friend has an 18 year old Mabel.

I think it's lovely as a child's name but not sure on a young adult in all honesty. It has a pretty ring to it though.
Now Esther is a really nice name.

Love Mabel and think it sounds sweet with Martha.

Honest thoughts? Drudgy! But those kind of names are fashionable now. But might sound drudgy again though...

Love it!

I would have chosen that name if a) ds had been a girl and b) it didn't rhyme with our surname!! :) (outs self maybe).

I love Mabel, it was a top contender for dd1. Wynn actually goes well although my first instinct was no - mainly because I grew up in Wales where everybody's middle name is Wyn, male and female ;-)

More unusual in England though and it won't have the "token middle name" connotation it has for me, and lovely meaning with Mabel, so go for it!

I still think v.old person rather than pleasant name with Mabel.

You might want to think whether you want both girls to have the same first letter - we chose to avoid it as have heard of siblings not liking having the same post/ cards/wanting to be more individual etc.

I was going to say Martha is very similar to Mabel and sounds nicer - then realised you already have one! I think the names are too similar!

Mmmm not sure about Mabel.

My sister used to love the book Mucky Mabel at the table!

How about Mary or May? Both lovely! Or Mary Belle?

Sorry I'm not a fan but I'm sure she will grow into her name, they always do whatever it is!

Not keen at all on Mabel but think Wynn is lovely and goes well together and lovely meaning. Having said that I'm not keen on 'old lady names'. Martha is more timeless and classic. Of your other names I prefer Matilda and Esther.

I really don't like Mabel TBH, but love Iris & Esther.

Wynn is a great middle name Grin.

I think if you both love the name it probably isn't wise to pay much attention to posters on here. You'll always get mixed reactions, and you're lucky to have found a name you both love! It's a perfectly nice name. Enjoy your little Mabel Smile

Love the name! I listen to the cd of 'Mack and Mabel' often and that Mabel is a quirky, loveable girl.

Thanks everyone. The positive comments really made me smile. I think it's a bit of a Marmite name but we love the fact that it's not too popular and that it has a couple of lovely nicknames should our little girl prefer one of these when she's older.

For those interested, reasons for discounting some other names are:

Iris - always a front runner but think I got bored of it. The safer option perhaps but not sure I love it.

Matilda - love this but a close friend just beat us to using this name. Also not keen on nn Tilly.

Esther - if it wasn't for some unfortunate rhyming words then we might have gone with this but I can't get them out of my head.

Eva - becoming very popular and doesn't sound so good with our surname.

BeatriceBean - I do like all of those names (especially Edith, as this was my grandma's name) but my OH isn't keen on any of them.

We shall see what we get and what suits anyway. Still no signs of baby arriving just yet!

Esther - if it wasn't for some unfortunate rhyming words then we might have gone with this but I can't get them out of my head.

Nest - er?
Vest - er?
Sex Pest - er?

Nothing rhymes with Esther, surely?!

Both Vesper and Hester are on our list, love them despite the dodgy rhyming potential.

Don't love Mabel- too old woman for my taste, and not in a good way. But it's not heinous and you love it, so go for it! Your middle name is lovely- I would think about using Wren myself, which is quite similar.
