Thank you all for such brilliant replies! I'm very grateful.

There are two main female characters, and the short list is...

  1. Dolly/Joyce/Jean/Freda - born 1923/4 and married to either Frank or Will(iam)
  1. Audrey (Aud) born 1933/4 and engaged to Harry (both characters are Jewish).

There you go! Any 1920s boys name suggestions always welcome. People say google, but there's lots and lots of American naming sites but very little on British names

Thanks again

Thanks again - I love Stella but I used it (wastefully, probably) for a minor character in my first book which is being published next year!

Benny is good. Basil, Maurice (Maury). All good.

Maurice could also be Mo and Will could also be Bill which was a common name back in the day - I used to know a couple called Dolly and Frank - it's got a nice ring to it!
