I'm sorry if I've offended people - I chose my own children's names with the help of this strand and since I didn't get much help from Google, I thought if ask here

OP I doubt anyone would have minded if you'd been upfront about why you needed a name.

whilewildeisonmine · 02/06/2014 22:11

Elsie
Christine
Lorna
Dilys

farfromtree · 02/06/2014 22:20

Does it really matter? Do people really feel betrayed by not knowing?

She could have googled just as easily if it was for a child. How does this make a difference.

farfrom, maybe you can acknowledge the MN posters in your book. Perhaps a % of the royalties to make good.

FidelineandFumblin · 02/06/2014 22:29

Well less so on this board than when creative writers do it on relationships or WWYD, admittedly. Over there it is upsetting.

In this case, you'd get a more authentic answer from me than if I was trying to tailor to what I consider fair to inflict on a 21st century child.

My nana was 94 on 6th may.. Born 1920 and is Mabel.. (I was due in aug but had mmc.. If it had of been a girl this would of been her name)
My nana's 2 older sisters were Clara and Florence.
My grandpa was born 1915 and was 1 of 10.. His sisters were Dorothy (dot), elsie, and ruby.

farfromtree · 02/06/2014 22:32

I would never dream of going onto the relationship board with a writerly enquiry without making my intentions clear. Actually, I'd never even considered using that board for research

And I didn't intentionally hide the fact - I just whacked out a question

Anyway, I apologise

I meant WASN'T trying to tailor...

No problem Smile

Nothing wrong with asking. What harm does it do? Does every poster in this section have to be trying to name a new baby? I found the thread fairly interesting, but if you don't you can always step away.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 04/06/2014 04:45

Rhoda is an interesting one for you.

Poppy became popular in the 1920s due to war connections. Great Gatsbyesque names, Daisy, Ruby, Nancy...
Hollywood silent actress names?

MrsRuffdiamond · 04/06/2014 23:24

How about Mabel?

aoife24 · 04/06/2014 23:30

Maude comes immediately to mind. Constance? Dora maybe.

HeeHiles · 04/06/2014 23:38

HeeHiles · 04/06/2014 23:39

Mary
Jane
Margaret
Victoria
Ethel
Frances
Phyllis
Fenella
Marigold
Marjory

All from my extended family, most had pet names though, very few of these women were known by their given name. The Fenella was a shock at her funeral, she'd called herself Lizzy for years!
