It would get shortened to Rich.

Horatio, Edward, Lawrence, Bartleby, Geoffrey

Bowlersarm · 01/06/2014 18:07

I like it, it's a bit different these days.

All the adult Richards we know don't get called Dick.

He may inevitably at school but if he laughs and shrugs it off, any teasing will stop.

MILfreetoagoodhome · 01/06/2014 18:09

We would call him rich or Richie as a baby but Richard would suit an old man. Those names sound like something a privately educated MP would have Smile traditional normal names

Personally I'd be wary of using two names that can be shortened to slang words for Penis. Dick Willie....

poppydaisy · 01/06/2014 18:30

I'm afraid I too think Dick Willy Blush

BikeRunSki · 01/06/2014 18:34

I had a music teacher called Richard William Fallas.
True fact.

MILfreetoagoodhome · 01/06/2014 18:38

Are there any names that go well together but aren't weird or new age ?

MuttonCadet · 01/06/2014 18:40

I think it's an excellent name, strong and traditional. It won't get shortened to Dick, it will be Rick or Rich.

NorbertDentressangle · 01/06/2014 18:42

I know a 10yo Richard and I've never heard him called Dick - his friends call him Rich or Richard

LynetteScavo · 01/06/2014 18:45

It's a good solid classic name.Smile

MILfreetoagoodhome · 01/06/2014 18:54

Richard William it is Grin

OP posts:
Kantha · 01/06/2014 19:05

Or shortened to Ricky.

Alternatives in a similar vein:
Andrew William
Robert William
Christopher William
Peter William
Michael William

But, it sounds like you both love Richard, so go for it. It's a proper traditional name that's isn't overly popular right now. A good thing IMO.

Oh, and stop discussing you ideas with SIL until baby is here and you can announce the name without 'helpful' input. Wink

RAFWife12 · 01/06/2014 19:08

I know it's a well known shortening of Richard, but I've never heard anyone called Dick! And to the idea of Dick Willie - most people don't use middle names every day.
I think it's a lovely name.

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2014 19:23

I don't think children nowadays will know that Dick is a diminutive of Richard.

I suppose there is a small risk of Dick Willie - but I don't think it's a big deal.

I did used to teach a child with the middle name you've chosen and the surname w i l l c o c k s. One day he came to see me in tears to say that the other children were calling him 'Willie Willie Cock' ! I had to force myself not to laugh!

Old fashioned with history:
Arthur, Albert, Alfred, Alexander, Benedict, Charles, Christopher, Daniel, David, Edward, Ferdinand, Frederick, George, Henry, Harold, John, James, Louis, Nicholas, Patrick, Phillip, Peter, Quentin, Robert, Stephen, Sebastian, Thomas

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/06/2014 19:26

I know a Dick. He has a son called Billy.

Dd and I laugh about a comedy turn saying they were not mature enough to have a friend called Dick.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 01/06/2014 19:28

I think it's fine, if William is his middle name then not that many people will actually know it.

Personally I think Richie is a love nn for Richard.

CPtart · 01/06/2014 19:33

I know a Richard, gets Rich or Richie.

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 01/06/2014 19:34

I have a relative called Richard, my dc call him auntie dickie!

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 01/06/2014 19:35

It's a great name though, I love Michael too, nice and traditional but less.

devoncreamtea · 01/06/2014 21:33

They'll be Rich or Richie - don't worry!

MILfreetoagoodhome · 01/06/2014 22:11

Plus the only way he would be called dick willy is if the other kids parents endorsed bullying and told their kids those words Hmm like the rude posters up thread for example their DC must have an interesting vocabulary with parents that have stuff like that popping into their minds Hmm

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 01/06/2014 22:14

Ds2 has both of those in his name. His initials are W A R M. All family names never even thought about the shortening of them. His first name is William he was always William but now at senior school he's will. He's never been called willy not in jest even.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/06/2014 22:16

What? Dick and Willy are acceptable abbreviations so I am not sure what you are implying.

Dick Francis.

Willy Carson.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/06/2014 22:20

And bullying?

Sheesh.

Viatrix · 01/06/2014 22:26

I think it's fine. It's nice to see Richard being used, don't hear of it often nowadays.
