What does everyone think to Owen?

We are currently loitering around the idea of naming our son this, however I am not 100% convinced.

Middle name would be James.

What does everyone think of when they hear the name Owen?
Is it deemed common or chavvy?
Any others that we might like along the same lines?

We've really struggled picking anything and this is the only name we've come back to.

Thanks :)

I love it.

Rommell · 26/05/2014 18:57

I think it's a fine name. I've known several Owens and they've all been intelligent, thoughtful people.

The only thing is it doesn't travel well - in lots of countries he'd be known as 'Oven'. But then lots of nice names don't travel well.

And 'Owen James' is a nice combination.

Bowlersarm · 26/05/2014 19:00

It's fine.

Neither chavvy or common.

Alternatively Austin, Rowan, Ronan, Roman.

tammytwigg · 26/05/2014 19:00

Love it got one , Ds 15 it was the only name we agreed on and there was only one more at his primary and the same at his grammar .

RoseberryTopping · 26/05/2014 20:14

I really don't like it, every Owen I've known has been a bit...dare I say it...Chavvy.

Notso · 26/05/2014 20:23

I love it.

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2014 21:19

Love it.

LadyAlysVorpatril · 26/05/2014 21:38

I've got an Owen James! It is officially the best name in the world. The kind of name that works for a lawyer or a plumber.

bouquetofpencils · 26/05/2014 22:40

Lovely, like Ewan but slightly more unusual I think.

Dizzywhore · 26/05/2014 22:45

Really don't like it, sorry!

littlegreengloworm · 26/05/2014 22:45

Love it

poppydaisy · 26/05/2014 22:56

Dislike Owen, sorry. But I do like Austin, Calvin, Quentin and Roman as alternatives.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 26/05/2014 23:04

Ok.

Quite boring!

Owain is better.

alita7 · 26/05/2014 23:07

I personally dislike it but it's not horrendous.

devoncreamtea · 27/05/2014 08:38

It's great.

If you keep coming back to it, then it must be the one?

Onesleeptillwembley · 27/05/2014 08:49

It's fine. Certainly not 'common'.

ViviPru · 27/05/2014 09:41

I love it. Really love it; it fulfills my name criteria of being neutral, classic and uncommon.

Would consider it ourselves were it not so similar to our dog's name Sad

Nocomet · 27/05/2014 09:45

I like Owen a lot.

But I may be swayed by him being the best looking boy in my school. Way out of my league, but a teen can dream.

BlueStarsAtNight · 27/05/2014 12:40

I like it, can't think of any negative connotations, and I only know one (aged about 2).

catchingzzzzeds · 27/05/2014 12:49

I love it, I know one 4 yr old Owen and his family are quite the opposite to chavvy!

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 27/05/2014 12:57

Love it. Classic and not too showy.

The more chavvy types round this way tend to use Euan, Ethan etc. Hate Owain as there is a shrill voiced mum in my village who screams it in a perfect 1950's BBC english accent several times a day...

Tobleronester · 27/05/2014 19:10

Thank you all for the responses!

I think we've settled on Owen finally, we're not really ones for outlandish and unusual names but at the same time we didn't want to name him something that was really popular.

We did briefly consider a few others, Rowan being one of them that some of you have mentioned but I have to be honest I love the name more for a girl. I also do quite like Austin but its already used in the family. Fraser was another we considered but somehow I can't get my head around it.

Thanks for all your wise words and reassurances :)

I know an Owen James!

I think it is a lovely name.

The only downside is that you can't shorten it. (We've ends up with Owsie but that is longer!)

SicknSpan · 28/05/2014 18:58

Lovely name. Goes well in all situations- the fab 6-year old Owen I know gets called "O" for short which I think I super cool!

Guin1 · 29/05/2014 08:31

Love it. It was on our short shortlist for DS. The only Owen I've known went by the nn of "O", which is fine.
