Am I being silly?

I have fallen in love with the name Bloom for a girl, I like flower names but they all seem very popular. Am I being ridiculous or is it a suitable name, I need a voice of reason! (Please say I'm not!)

The Producers - funniest film EVER
Bialystock and Bloom

So - no, not for a baby girl

RoseberryTopping · 22/05/2014 19:04

Bloom is not good, sorry! I love Valentina or Valentine though, I wanted to call our DS Valentine but DP was dead against it :(

Viviennemary · 22/05/2014 19:07

Bloom is a totally ridiculous name. I don't mind Posy. What about Violet if you like flower names.

Casmama · 22/05/2014 19:12

I knew a lady called Bluma once - it's Yiddish - and she hated it so much she changed her name. Bloom is just as bad IMO.
Valentina is ok but she may end up with Val or Tina as a nickname so it depends how you feel about that

OneStepCloser · 22/05/2014 19:14

Valentina Blossom is lovely.

Sidge · 22/05/2014 19:18

I know a Briar which I think is pretty.

Monkeyandanimal · 22/05/2014 19:26

it makes me think of creepy Mr Bloom off of CBeebies....

Valentina is lovely!

Gugglebum · 22/05/2014 19:40

I would absolutely use Bloom as a mn. Sounds silly with my married surname, but I would otherwise use it in the middle in a heartbeat. That said, I'd never consider it as a given first name.

burgatroyd · 22/05/2014 21:14

Valentina is fab but not Val which is what it will prob get shortened to.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 22/05/2014 21:15

Eva Bloom Surname sounds quite nice but a bit like twosurnames together (which hides the wackiness that is Bloom as a name)

MaximoosesMum · 22/05/2014 23:20

Blossom
Fleur
Violet
I'm a jasmine...

PetaPipa · 23/05/2014 06:37

Bluebell? But Valentina is lovely - I would go for that.

buttercrumble · 23/05/2014 06:47

Valentina is beautiful , Bloom is not very nice at all Smile

Delphiniumsblue · 23/05/2014 07:00

Bloom is dreadful!
Valentina is OK but you do need to realise it will, most likely, be Val or Tina.

Angelto5 · 23/05/2014 07:18

Evangeline

PitchSlapped · 23/05/2014 07:51

I have just googled nicknames for valentina and there are lots of options - Valli, Vina, Vallen for example. If you are using a pretty nickname its very unlikely people are just going to start using Val or Tina

burgatroyd · 23/05/2014 07:57

Pitch, none of those nn are as nice as Valentina, which is a pity.

Rivercam · 23/05/2014 07:59

Valentina is lovely.

Alternatives:
Clementine
Seraphina
Primrose
Bryony
Penelope
Bethany
Rowena
Ivy
Dawn
Violet

jaynebxl · 23/05/2014 07:59

Bloom as in Godfrey?

RosegoldRuby · 23/05/2014 08:02

Valentine is lovely, but Tina is a horrible nn, IMHO.
I went through childhood with a name which was shortened by everyone to Tina and I truly hated it. As soon as I was 18 I went by my full name, very unusual, but at least not a name that was popularly given to poodles and GSDs in the sixties.
Yes, I do still feel strongly about this, apparently Blush.

bouquetofpencils · 23/05/2014 08:47

I think the idea of Bloom is sweet, it conjures up very pretty feminine images. However it would be hard to live with if it was your name.
I think as a middle name it could work.
It makes me think of Bluebell too. Valentina Bluebell!

Guin1 · 23/05/2014 14:47

If you want a flower name, have you had a look at some of the less popular ones? How about Leilani (various nn possibilities), or Jasmine, Iris, Jacinta or Heather? Or maybe Marguerite?

Marnierose · 23/05/2014 17:25

Another vote for Valentina. I probably wouldn't take Dr Bloom very seriously in RL. I do like a name that looks good on a cv.

squoosh · 23/05/2014 17:30

I would assume that a Doctor Bloom had the same qualifications as a Dr Valentina.

RoseberryTopping · 23/05/2014 17:35

Would you really not take advice from a doctor because their parents gave them a name that's not to your taste Marnie? I'm genuinely curious...
