How would you pronounce Pearl?

I like the name Pearl but I'm worried how people would pronounce it in different accents? I would say it 'Purl' but I think my DH's side of the family would say it 'Peh-ril'. How would you say it?

Purl. I can't imagine any other pronunciation

StrawberryMojito · 21/05/2014 21:36

Purl. Where are they from?

Well I'm Scottish and pronounce it as Peh-ril.

Where is your DHs family from?

candycrushhater · 21/05/2014 21:41

See, I'm Scottish and I know how it should be pronounced, but I roll my Rs so it would come out as Peril.

Drquin · 21/05/2014 21:42

It would definitely be a matter of pronunciation or local accent, I can hear "peh-ril" as how it would be pronounced locally to me!

justmuddlingalong · 21/05/2014 21:43

Peh-ril here I'm afraid. Am Scottish and can't pronounce it Purl.

PrimalLass · 21/05/2014 21:44

Peh-ril. Scottish.

TheSydenhamSet · 21/05/2014 21:45

Here in south london a lot of people would say 'pell'

Maybe like this. Not quite Peh-ril, actually, but not purl either (although to me purl in knitting is pu-ril, so who knows).

Horispondle · 21/05/2014 22:52

Yes they are Scottish! I think I might face a lifetime of getting irritated at the mis-pronunciationHmm. It's such a shame though as I think it's such a pretty name!

I like the Scottish pronunciation... Most names are subject to a bit of accent driven variation aren't they?

KatieKaye · 21/05/2014 22:59

Another one who would say "Peh-ril" - and also Scottish!
Not sure it is a "mispronunciation" - more a different way of saying the name.

Pearl used to be a very popular diminutive for Margaret in Scotland - after Queen Margaret, The Pearl of Scotland. Vey common for women born in the early years of the last century.

MoreBoober · 21/05/2014 23:08

Yes also Scottish so Peh-ril. Actually one of the words my Geordie DH thinks it hilarious to hear me pronounce !! Hmm

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 21/05/2014 23:14

I couldn't use pearl as i'm Scottish and pronounce it like beryl.
I knew a Pearla, which does sound better when I say it.

Ludways · 21/05/2014 23:19

Purl here.

My dad is Scottish and his side of the family say my name differently to my mums side. I like it, it's more exotic than here in NE England. It needs to be hard pushed for my boring name to sound exotic!

Anjou · 22/05/2014 06:01

I'm English living in Scotland. 'Pearl' is one of those words that really distinguish the differences in mine & DH's accents! My 'Puuhl' is his 'Peh-ril'. I agree with Yellowsnow; go with Perla. I know one and it's pronounced as read by all the Scottish folk I know. It sounds lovely with a Scottish accent actually.

Horispondle · 22/05/2014 07:53

Oh Pearla! I haven't come across that before it's lovely! Thank you!

If anyone interested, more about 'rhotic' (perr-il or purr-il) and 'non-rhotic' (purl) local accents here. A helpful young man explains:

I knew someone in Scotland with a cat called 'Pearl' - a very fitting name when said the Scottish way.

funnyossity · 22/05/2014 10:02

I spent a year working in Scotland where a head honcho elsewhere would be referred to at meetings; I was so impressed that this woman Carol had got so far up the company.

Turned out "Carol" was Carl!Sad

squoosh · 22/05/2014 12:24

I have a rhotic accent and pronounce it 'purl', I think 'peh-ril' sounds awful.

florascotia · 22/05/2014 12:58

Cat-owner mentioned above had north-east Scottish accent (Inverness/Nairn). He did not say 'pairr-il' but something more like 'pehrr-ll' or even 'puhrr-ll'.

Pearla is very nice. There is also an American name Perilla (a herb) and a Swedish name Pernilla.

DinoSnores · 22/05/2014 17:50

I'm Scottish and would say something closer to "Peh-ril" (although not as pronouced) than "Purl".

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 22/05/2014 17:53

Eh? Um look, isn't this just oooh I dunno a bit racist? Or xenophobic? Not choosing a name because of how a diff nationality may pronounce it?

Sorry but to me, pick a name you like. Picking it because of local dialect unless it turns it into swear words is well a bit weird....

funnyossity · 22/05/2014 18:06

Minnie there are whole groups of names I would not choose with my OWN accent.
