What do you think of Guy?

Hi,

We are really really struggling for boys names. My DH suggested Guy last night.

I don't hate it, but I don't think I love it either. It seems rather simple to me. It also doesn't feel like a little boys name to me, more appropriate for an adult.

What's your reaction?

bit dated sounding to me tbh, aren't most 'Guys' about 50?

I actually quite like it. It's easy to say and spell and is not overused!

I've known a few Guys of various ages (including a teen), so it's not specific to any one generation, IMO. I say go for it!

I'm not a big fan but a friend I was at school with has just called her baby Guy. Not a 'child's' name IMO but then most of our lives are spent as adults, therefore it makes a lot more sense to give a child an adult name which they can grow into than have a cutesy diminutive one on their birth certificate that seems faintly ridiculous on a grown man.

Guy is a good strong solid name. And not as overused as lots of the current trendy cutesy names. Good choice!

Another thought I've had on this is that while not currently over-popular, Guy does have a slightly current "vibe" to it, as I've come across quite a few babies/young children with short names ending in "y" recently, such as Roy, Rory, Ray, Jay, Ty etc.

I them its's a bit dated, but also confusing as people often refer to men as guys. We have a friend called Guy and he always interrupts conversations when I mention "this guy, that guy" etc...lol

I quite like it, I love one syllable names.

It's fine in French as 'Ghee' but weird as 'Guy' because of the common usage of saying 'that guy' for bloke

In Ireland the 'ghee' pronunciation would cause much sniggering as 'gee' is really crude slang for 'vagina'.

I think it's dire. Not attractive and very middleaged old manish.

I loved a guy for DS3 but he was born on firework night so it was a no go.

Anyone who has a son on Guy Fawke's night and calls him Guy probably has their own dossier at MI6 headquarters, just in case.

I had a boyfriend called Guy and he WAS born on Nov 5th!!!!!!!!! I kid you not

He was also a twat of the highest order so, for me, the name is a complete no-no. Even now, 20+ years on, hearing it still makes me shudder ever so slightly.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail your thread OP! If you and your OH love the name, you go for it, because that's all that matters. Doesn't sound as though you do love it though....

I disagree that it is a strong name. I think of it as being weak.

Also think of Guy the Gorilla.

Its just not good enough. Its like 'mark'. Its like you haven't even tried to come up with a name.

There's loads of brilliant boys names and if you really can't think of one, you can't just call him 'guy'. Its like calling him "baby" or "boy" or having dog and calling it "dog". Use your imagination!

I always assume that Guys will be pretty cool, whether that's because of Guy Pearce I don't know, but I certainly don't think of it as an old-man name (though I am quite old myself ).

I suppose Sir Guy of Gisbourne was a bit of a dick.

I'm not saying it's acceptable or right or whatever but I would worry that from year 4 onwards at school, Guy would be called gay by most of the boys, sorry

I really like it. I know an adult Guy. I think it is an underused classic.

One of my ds is Guy , he is the only one in the year but there are a couple of others at the school . He doesn't get teased about it generally although there is a bit around Nov .
