It's a surname isn't it? Usually spelled Delaney? Confused

beershuffle · 04/05/2014 22:08

Its a surname that seems to be spelt incorrectly. Why would you?

AMI88 · 04/05/2014 22:11

Boy or a girl?

I don't dislike it, but sounds like a band name to me (not necessarily a negative!)

squoosh · 04/05/2014 22:15

Surname spelt Delaney.

namechangenumber5 · 04/05/2014 22:16

I like it, without the i!

atypicalwotsit · 04/05/2014 22:22

Girl and can be spelt various ways according to some baby name website or other!

squoosh · 04/05/2014 22:24

It's a really common surname in Ireland and always spelt Delaney.

'Delainey' is kre8ive.

squoosh · 04/05/2014 22:25

What other names are on your list?

KatieKaye · 04/05/2014 22:27

It's "Delaney".
And it's fine as a surname.
If you are thinking of changing your surname, I'd go with the normal spelling, without the "i".

atypicalwotsit · 04/05/2014 22:31

Damaris, Coco, Saffron...

I also don't mind creative names!

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 04/05/2014 22:32

I had a teacher called Mr Delaney who smelt really bad. It's a surname, and not a particularly attractive one at that. Lainie without the De bit is quite pretty.

wigglesrock · 04/05/2014 23:09

I went to school with lots of Delaneys - all surnames. I would assume if I heard it that you were using a family surname as a first name like Baxter, Cooper, Reid, Stirling, Anderson etc. I'm also not a fan of the Delainey spelling. I know a Lainey, she gets it from Elena.

MrsBungle · 04/05/2014 23:11

I quite like just laney.

manicinsomniac · 05/05/2014 02:50

It's known as a girls name in the US, spelt Delaney.

I quite like it.

LettertoHerms · 05/05/2014 03:06

Definitely a girl's first name in the US, and I like it. Do know it as a surname too, spelled differently.

Nowitscleanugobshite · 05/05/2014 03:18

It makes me think of "de roady" and "de pathy" and "de streety". I know that's not helpful... But it's very late at night!! Sorry!!

madwomanbackintheattic · 05/05/2014 03:54

I know a few female Delaneys. (North America).

I don't know any Delaineys and would assume you had shoved in an extra vowel to be 'unique'. Which makes my teeth itch.

UriGeller · 05/05/2014 06:18

Elaine would make a nice 'Laney'. But Elaine conjures up an image of an insipid blonde woman with a centre parting and frosted blue eyeshadow right up to her eyebrows. She was in the audience at a 1972 Top of the Pops, dancing in a brown polo neck and flares. She still talks about how Kid Jensen almost stood on her toe as he walked by.

Costacoffeeplease · 05/05/2014 06:29

I can only think of the song 'Delaney had a donkey....' So wouldn't on that basis

atypicalwotsit · 05/05/2014 06:59

Will check out the song!

atypicalwotsit · 05/05/2014 07:01

Urigeller, your Elaine feels very real!!! I think its due for a come back.

Costacoffeeplease · 05/05/2014 07:45

It's a sort of comic song sung by val doonican back in the dark ages

wannabestressfree · 05/05/2014 08:29

It's in four weddings and a funeral!!! Rowan Atkinson is the nervous priest who says the mans name.... St. John Delaney...... :)

Tenrec · 05/05/2014 08:49

I like it a lot, personally! My friend's kid is called Delaney (Laney).
