Hi weird question but I was just wondering if anyone on here has named their son after a game of thrones character?

I named my daughter Khaleesi nearly 3 years ago before a lot of people had heard of game of thrones and now its becoming a really popular name. I was just wondering if theres a trend for the male GOT names too??

I doubt there will be any little Joffreys...and Jon isn't primarily a GOT name.

I reckon Tyrion will be quite a popular one.

Theon is a lovely name but it would be incredibly cruel to name a child after that character!

evelynj · 24/04/2014 21:01

Well at a national trust place a few years ago I heard a parent shouting after their beloved child, 'come on it's time to go.......Herod'!

So you never know!

TheAbominableWoman · 24/04/2014 21:01

I considered Tyrion but DH vetoed it despite also being a fan. Baby turned out to be a girl. I didn't give her a GoT name but I did get her a very small part in the show instead Grin

ray totally agree on Theon! But I was watching LOTR Two Towers and thought Theoden was equally nice and he's a good guy. Wouldn't personally do it myself but must admit there are some nice names in these books. So many of them have familiar sounds to us but a bit different - Theon, Eddard, Rickon, etc.

CountBapula · 25/04/2014 10:10

DH suggested Brandon for DS2 but I vetoed it immediately. Memories of Beverly Hills 90210...

Martorana · 25/04/2014 10:13

Presumably not- because most people would have more sense.............

Choccyhobnob · 25/04/2014 10:13

Totally agree, Theon is a great name but a horrible character! Tyrion is a great character and a good name but maybe not ready for the mainstream yet. What about Tommen? Think it's great now I come to think about it! Just a shame he's the spawn of Cersei.....

NomDeClavier · 25/04/2014 10:41

Sorry but you named your daughter Khaleesi? As in the fictional title? Surely that's just like calling her Princess.

I would be wary of naming any child after a GoT, or any ongoing series, character. You never know what will happen to them.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 25/04/2014 10:49

There is a lot of talk about how real fans of GOT would call their daughter Daenerys rather than Khaleesi, as Khaleesi means Princess. Do you know Sarah means Princess as well? It's a perfectly good meaning for a name Smile

But nom I agree it's risky when you don't know the ending of the character's story, especially when it's a GOT character - so many grim things happen to so many of them!

Tea1Sugar · 25/04/2014 10:52

Not a character but dd2 was born last week and we named her Emilia. Neither of us have ever watched game of thrones but the midwife said they've had loads of Emilia's recently after Emilia Clarke.

EyelinerQueen · 25/04/2014 11:00

No chance.

Both DP and I are are huge GoT fans. But giving your child a name so intrinsically linked to a popular series of books/tv show strikes me as immature.

It's a human being you're naming - they're stuck with that name for the rest of their lives. I think it's hugely unfair and stupidly capricious.

Not so much for names like Ned, Jaime, Arya etc but Tyrion? Cersei? Jorah? Podrick?!

Fine for your cat, not for your kid.

NomDeClavier · 25/04/2014 11:15

But Sarah is a mainstream name and not a) made up or b) clearly identifiable as a title. Khaleesi (and probably Daenerys but you could pass that off as Greek) is going to forever be linked to GoT and it's not even an invented name. It would be like calling someone Amyrlin or Aes Sedai (I have a WoT in front of me ;))

Martorana · 25/04/2014 11:28

Sarah is an actual name with a proper meaning from a real language.

Monkeyandanimal · 25/04/2014 11:48

podrick is a bit like paidraig, so maybe!

EyelinerQueen · 25/04/2014 11:49

Don't even go there Monkey!

I'm pregnant with a DS and DP keeps mentioning Pod Grin

CoteDAzur · 25/04/2014 11:53

There was a thread on here about a little girl Khaleesi at someone's school and I had thought it was a joke.

'It's becoming a really popular name'? Whereabouts it that?

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 25/04/2014 11:55

Has anyone named their baby boy after a game of thrones character?

No, because it would be unspeakably sad!

HavantGuard · 25/04/2014 11:55

Emilia was hardly unpopular before the TV series!

HavantGuard · 25/04/2014 11:56

It's a lovely name too.

RiverTam · 25/04/2014 12:02

don't know about GoT but I know of a Thorin and an Aslan! Once you get used to it they seem perfectly normal!

I wouldn't have gone for Khaleesi though, I must say, as it's not actually the name of a character!

For a boy I'd go for Tyrion or Jorah.

PeaceLillyDoge · 25/04/2014 12:19

No but I was very tempted by Aria (couldn't face using the Arya spelling). It was a close second choice.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/04/2014 08:35

Tyrion, possibly.

Though that is actually a Welsh name anyway, Martin modified the spelling very slightly from Tirion to Tyrion. It's a girls name though.

sophielouise · 26/04/2014 08:40

Friends of ours named their son Bran. He is Brandon but they all call him Bran and that's due to GOT. BTW I think some people are being tactless to the OP regarding the use of Khaleesi. It's the name of her DD remember. Khaleesi might not be the actual characters name but it is the one everyone's heart belongs to. When you think of her you think 'Khaleesi' and not Daenerys (IMO anyway)

NomDeClavier · 26/04/2014 09:12

No, I think Daenerys because that's how she was introduced and I threw book 5 across the room several times because of her. That's another risk you run - some people will hate the character.
