Has anyone named their baby boy after a game of thrones character?

Hi weird question but I was just wondering if anyone on here has named their son after a game of thrones character?

I named my daughter Khaleesi nearly 3 years ago before a lot of people had heard of game of thrones and now its becoming a really popular name. I was just wondering if theres a trend for the male GOT names too??

I don't know any GoT fan who thinks of her as Khaleesi first.

She is quite distinctly Daenerys Targaryen.

Khaleesi is a title given to her when she marries Khal Drogo - it literally means 'wife of the Khal'.

Yes I know that is true and is her actual name, but still everyone has a different opinion and is entitled to it. It's still tactless for people to criticise the OPs use of the name for her own DD. Names are very personal choices and I'd feel a bit hurt if I came on here saying what my daughters name was to be told it was silly or not a real name.

CoteDAzur · 26/04/2014 10:07

Many people get told just that around here.

Opinions here are honest. You have all of RL for 'tact', tiptoeing around someone's feelings, saying what people want to hear rather than what you really think etc.

Fine, if that's how you want to be on MN, too, but I'm afraid you can't tell others what to do.

sophielouise · 26/04/2014 10:45

Even though it's MN people are still 'Real'! Fair enough though if that's how it works 'around here' thanks for educating me Blush

If you post about your child's name while asking for opinions on the baby names section of a website, you're going to get opinions. And, some of those opinions aren't going to be what you wanted to hear.

You don't actually have to disclose that you called your child khaleesi to ask people if they've given their children names derived from GoT.

singersgirl · 26/04/2014 14:22

But you wouldn't refer to that character as Khaleesi, would you? Khaleesi is her title and Jorah Mormont uses it as a form of honorific address, just as people would say 'my lord' or 'your majesty'. People don't refer to Joffrey just as King or to Jaime Lannister just as Ser.

I think it's odd to name your children after characters in a fictional universe, however much you love that story world.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 26/04/2014 14:30

You named your daughter khaleesi? Oh dear.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 26/04/2014 14:32

Sophielouise there was no need for her to come and invite comment on her daughter's ridiculous name. And Khaleesi is silly and not a real name.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 26/04/2014 14:32

Nomdeclavier, DH wanted to call dd Nynaeve. I thought that was silly and she would never make a high court judge so we put el'Nynaeve ti al'Meara Mandragoran on the birth certificate Grin

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 26/04/2014 14:35

Rax Grin
Nynaeve is at least a name, and would date far less than a game of thrones name as it's not 'of a time' nor universally known. I wouldn't pick it though because nobody knows how to pronounce it!

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 26/04/2014 16:26

Indeed Ehric, it's a perfectly good name as Nynaeve was saying only this morning whilst tugging on her braid and glaring at her little brother al'Lan. Grin

DH did seriously like it as a name but then he also wanted to name DS after a post apocalyptic gun shark out of a 2000AD comic. The dc are actually named after an infantry tank a protagonist of a novel and a ninja turtle an archangel respectively, which means they're named after things which have meaning for us and have, you know, actual names.

I know two babies born locally this year and named Khaleesi actually. I was surprised and also think if you're going to choose something so niche, it makes more sense to go with the made up name than the made up title. But I had my choice at naming my children and just shrug and have another biscuit.

Ilovebean · 26/04/2014 20:31

HORDOR!

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/04/2014 20:35

Oi ilove it is HODOR.

Call yourself a fan? Grin

CalamitouslyWrong · 26/04/2014 20:38

It's just hodor, actually. You don't want to be misspelling your GoT name.

Lol! As I typed it I thought it looked incorrect, that'll teach me not to google!

chocchips · 27/04/2014 11:16

The majority of comments I've seen on here about my name are negative (including my own). I've seen negative comments about my dd's name. Doesn't upset me in the absolute slightest, not everyone will like it.

But when you openly admit that your child is named khaleesi then people will have opinions, if you don't want opinions I'm afraid you shouldn't post the name.

Names are personal yes but you have to remember that you are inflicting a name on another human being, not a dog, and there is a fine line between unusual and stupid, and its the child who suffers and not the parent!

Bunbaker · 27/04/2014 11:21

I have never watched GOT, but am not keen on children being named after TV characters. It just strikes me as being a little unoriginal.

babybutterfly0 · 28/04/2014 12:59

Seems I've started a bit of a lively debate lol
Just to clarify I was quite aware that khaleesi was a title and not a name when I called my daughter that. I just preferred the sound of it to her actual name Daenerys. I wanted an unusual but pretty name. I also gave her a more normal middle name just incase she didn't like her name when she grew up and wanted to use that instead as I'm not evil lol plus queen seems to suit her as it's how she behaves most days lol
Anyone who thinks it's a silly name that's fine you're welcome to your opinion.

SOPHIELOUISE would you mind getting in touch with me? I just had a quick question for you if that's ok? Xxx
