Sandy for a boy?

Err.... Third thread in a very short space of time, so apologies for that!
Short story- Ds2 due on a few weeks, utterly clueless on the name, have a few solids but keep veering between loving them and utterly detesting/being extremely bored of them.

On the list are Henry, Jonathon, Patrick,

Dh's family are super old money posh and the Dc's are at or will go to rugger bugger prep schools etc.
MIL has an opinion on everything and when I suggested Sebastian as an option, she pursed her chanel covered lips and said... 'not in this family dear...' and left it hanging like a forgotten dog poo bag.

The thing is, I think I want to call the baby Sandy (not on birth cert, just in general). What formal names can be shortened to Sandy? (not Alexander, although adored as a name is a) my nephew and b) an ex who caused somewhat of a stir by running off with my best friend from boarding school.

We have a stupid surname (House) which turns everything into a wing of a mental institution or a museum/ bank...

Siblings are Isabella Juliette and Arthur Benjamin.

I'm at my wits end with this!!!!!!!

Lysander is lovley! Going go throw one out there just in case as i love it...how about 'Hugo'?

KnickyKnacky · 20/04/2014 01:16

I think you should wind your Mil up and say you are going for Gary-Darren to be shortened to Gazza-Dazza

Or Steve-Dave Grin

JillyPooper · 20/04/2014 01:30

How about Zander? Could be shortened to Zandy which sounds like Sandy

Just don't have another girl and call her Wendy

JillyPooper · 20/04/2014 01:33

or Zandro?

Mrsfullhouse · 20/04/2014 10:38

Having just spent the weekend at the MIL's... I'm now more determined than ever to do what the buggery I like!! Sebastian is out I'm afraid, Dh not a fan (anymore) his arguments sound suspiciously like they've been handed down from up high.
Ds keeps pointing at my tummy and shouting "ack ack ack' so we're taking that to mean that he wants the baby to be called Jack.
Mil has previously dismissed it as a 'field hand's name, or that of a coal miner darling....'
So it's ticked the box of pissing her off.

  • but it is so very very popular. We dismissed Henry for that reason (that and Hen House/ Hoover cupboard) I know about 9 baby Jacks born in the last year or so!

It seems that no name is going to be right and we'll just end up calling him Housey.

I know a very blonde boy called Sandor (accent over the a which I don't know how to do on this keyboard. I believe it's the hungarian version of alexander, pronounced SHAHNdor.

OnlyLovers · 20/04/2014 13:13

Sandor is lovely!

OP, if it's indeed true that your DH is parroting opinion from 'on high' then he needs to man up.

If calling him Jack would piss off the MIL then go for that.

BobTheFly · 20/04/2014 13:19

I think Sandy House is cool but yes I'd laugh. Presumably - Arthur House doesn't bother you though ... (Half a house)

Mrsfullhouse · 20/04/2014 13:40

No- we just call Arthur 'Bungle' (short for bungalow) when he's a little bugger.

Dh does need to man up, but I married him knowing that, so it's been a slow progression from utter mummys boy to slightly less of a mummys boy.

The whole 'Sandy house' thing doesn't bother me too much, as it's only a nickname and if he doesn't like it, he can just stop using it, but Lysander is a bit... Greek? Oh god, I don't know what's putting me off, but I'm just not sure of it.
Dh loves Jack... I just can't think of any names I really love... Except girl names.
There's no way I can dress him in pink and call him Tabitha is there??

legalalien · 20/04/2014 14:05

What about Tristan .
I quite like James with House.

badtime · 20/04/2014 14:59

'Jack' is traditionally a diminutive of John, and John is much less common. Would that keep the peace?

(although I have to say, 'John House' or 'Jack House' sounds a bit like a toilet - in America the john and in parts of Ireland the 'jacks' or 'jax' is the toilet, and (short word) house quite often sounds a bit privy-related)

OnlyLovers · 20/04/2014 15:47

Probably can't get away with calling him Tabitha, no. You can always dress a child in pink though, whatever gender. Grin

Lysander is indeed Greek. And beautiful.

But if you both like Jack then go for Jack and watch the MIL's conniptions. With popcorn.

MissUumellmahaye · 20/04/2014 17:26

Lysander is beautiful.

Your DMIL on the other hand, sounds vile. "Not in this family..", how weird to feel pride or increased status merely by being related to someone.

Perhaps you could hasten her departure from this mortal coil with other Shakespearean names? I'm offering Troilus, Titus and Shylock as suggestions.

Mrsfullhouse · 20/04/2014 19:37

Oh god, Mil is so atrocious. She has a picture of her laughing with the queen mother in the hall so it is literally the first thing you see when you enter the house.
Would love to aid her speedy exit from my life, but that either means divorcing my gorgeous, if slightly wet, husband... Or beating her to death with a bottle of vintage champagne in the wine cellar and then drinking the evidence.

Was crumbling to Jack for ease... But it does sound a bit toilety and am falling back in love Lysander.

Although when I ran it past my seven year old f2f she burst out laughing and said
'Lasagne House, you are a bloody fool mummy'
(yes, the language was addressed, but it was bloody funny)

Mrsfullhouse · 20/04/2014 19:39

F2f!? Bloody autocorrect.
Was supposed to say Dd.

OP posts:
OnlyLovers · 22/04/2014 10:24

I like the sound of your DD2 Grin.

She'll get the hang of saying Lysander soon enough and entertain you all until she does

Popsandpip · 23/04/2014 22:10

Sanderson?

tabulahrasa · 24/04/2014 11:59

Insist you now want to call him Legolas or Dijon and wait for them to persuade you back to Sebastian...

rachel234 · 24/04/2014 14:47

Lysander is perfect - classic, cool, strong and not overused. And you can call him Sandy!

OnlyLovers · 25/04/2014 11:17

Grin at Dijon.

Mrsfullhouse · 25/04/2014 11:40

Ha ha ha. We've tried the wind up names... and while the pretend mini strokes, heart palpitations and tantrums are somewhat gratifying at the time, the earache I get from Dh about his poor defenseless mother after make me want to punch him in the face.

Love pregnancy hormones...

OP posts:
OnlyLovers · 25/04/2014 13:00

Give him earache back. Grin
