Sandy for a boy?

Err.... Third thread in a very short space of time, so apologies for that!
Short story- Ds2 due on a few weeks, utterly clueless on the name, have a few solids but keep veering between loving them and utterly detesting/being extremely bored of them.

On the list are Henry, Jonathon, Patrick,

Dh's family are super old money posh and the Dc's are at or will go to rugger bugger prep schools etc.
MIL has an opinion on everything and when I suggested Sebastian as an option, she pursed her chanel covered lips and said... 'not in this family dear...' and left it hanging like a forgotten dog poo bag.

The thing is, I think I want to call the baby Sandy (not on birth cert, just in general). What formal names can be shortened to Sandy? (not Alexander, although adored as a name is a) my nephew and b) an ex who caused somewhat of a stir by running off with my best friend from boarding school.

We have a stupid surname (House) which turns everything into a wing of a mental institution or a museum/ bank...

Siblings are Isabella Juliette and Arthur Benjamin.

I'm at my wits end with this!!!!!!!

Louis is lovely Clarabum, lovely combo of the two of them.

I'm pretty set on Sandy in one form or another- I'm just not going to mention it to the hag-in-law.

Not a big fan of Alasdair... even my tablet is trying to autocorrect it....

soontobeslendergirl · 15/04/2014 21:19

it's trying to correct it as you have put a "d" in instead of a "t", even the tablet knows it's wet. :o

abitofanangrybird · 15/04/2014 21:22

The crazy lady Hoover house comment just made me cry with laughter! I have a Henry and love the name but I do take your point!
Is Xander a name in its own right? Nn Sandy?

Clarabum · 15/04/2014 21:25

Gah, bloody hag in laws sticking their noses in. YOu should have heard some of the suggestions from my hag-in-law. Let's put it this way, if they'd had made it through school without being labelled as a gang member i'd have been surprised.
My three are all blond(e), I have a wee girl too and I'm always quite surprised as I'm very dark but DH looks like a viking so his genes must be stronger.

RubyFlint · 15/04/2014 21:28

Couldn't Sandy be a middle name and perhaps a nickname at home instead of a shortened first name? Although tbh I'm not at all sure about Sandy House. Sorry Confused

CheckpointCharlie · 15/04/2014 21:29

I went to school with a boy called Lander, he was cool.
and v v posh too

Mrsfullhouse · 15/04/2014 21:38

Dh's nickname (apart from the obvious Housey) is Thor, and Ds1 is the spit of him. Dd is a lot more like me, darker skin but very blonde- she's so gorgeous it's frightening.

I think Sandy would have suited any of them.

Sowface-in-law is pushing (relentlessly) for Roderick...a family tradition apparently, but funny how her two precious boys escaped that honour... a common theme it would seem!

Mrsfullhouse · 15/04/2014 21:42

I know RubyFlint, Sandy House is bonkers, but honestly, any name sounds ridiculous with our surname...

Dd1 Isabella house?...no, it's a bell.
Ds1 Arthur House.... Arthur (arf a) house is a bungalow innit?

I'm now a kebabery and ds2 is goibg to be a beach hut by all accounts

Face palm, head in hands... dies a little inside etc etc etc

OP posts:
RubyFlint · 15/04/2014 21:43

Roderick!!? And she turned her nose up at Sebastian?

Theonlyoneiknow · 15/04/2014 22:03

I love Sandy! I wish I had used it for my DS especially as he is very fair and Alexander is a family name but mycousin is Sandy so didn't feel I could. Wish I had just done it now :-(

Artandco · 15/04/2014 22:07

Maybe mils need to meet! Can talk all day about Mortimer and roderick!

Mrsfullhouse · 15/04/2014 22:15

Ha ha, Morty, Roddy and the fact that their sons' careers/ welfare/ mothers/ lunch/ need to have a lie in on a sunday is the most important thing in the world and how much they must miss their mother's roast potatoes whilst mindlessly pushing our pathetic offering of a sunday roast around the plate....

I don't have Mil issues... at all!

P.s Mil has never so much as seen a raw spud let alone roasted one- they have a cook. Lazy cow.

'MIL has an opinion on everything and when I suggested Sebastian as an option, she pursed her chanel covered lips and said... 'not in this family dear...' and left it hanging like a forgotten dog poo bag.'

Oh Lordy, she sounds like a dream!

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 16/04/2014 15:11

I know only one Sandy and he is an annoying twat. so that's a no from me.

(sorry)

ACatCalledColin · 16/04/2014 15:11

Sandy reminds me of a dog, sorry.

OnlyLovers · 16/04/2014 15:22

Oh, call him Sebastian if you want to. Fuck the MIL.

Alternatively, I like Sandy and don't actually think Sandy House is too bad. People don't often address each other with their full names in everyday life and as for school, let's face it, he'll get teased for his name at school whatever his name is. Everyone does.

But I LOVE Lysander as a name. I think you say it Lice-ander rather than with a 'z' sound.

I like Alexander too. And Angus. but call him Sebastian to piss off the mare-in-law

pencilsharpener · 16/04/2014 19:07

I think you should completely ignore your MIL and find a name you like which goes with your surname. Given that it is "House" this is easier said than done!

I'm glad that you have already realised the problems with Isabella and Arthur because, to be honest, they were the first thoughts that crossed my mind. For the same reasons I wouldn't go for Sandy House (beach hut) or Henry, which will end up being called Hen House.

You need to steer clear of any names or shortenings of names which can sound like other words - Ivor House, Robin House, Nick House, Max House, Will House, Julian (Ju) House, Gabriel (Gay) House etc etc.

So. Deep breath. If you like Sebastian, go for that - Seb, Sebby, Bas all OK I think. Other possibilities could be Oliver, Frederick (Freddie), Rupert, Gregory, Jacob, Simon. I like Jonathan (Jonty) too.

ZingHasAHotCrossBunInTheOven · 16/04/2014 19:25

Sebastian is a wonderful name.

one of my favourite books from childhood is called Belle & Sebastian - it's a lovely story about a boy and his dog.

go for it!

Ekatea · 19/04/2014 00:46

If you like the name that's all that matters.

FatFrumpyFilly · 19/04/2014 01:17

Our son has the same name as my father-in-law's father. FIL hated his father and when we told MIL how much we liked the name she went spare! FIL didn't mind and told us to pick whatever name we wanted. We decided to keep quiet about boys names and only informed MIL on girls names. As not till DS was born that we proudly announced his name. Yes she game us a hard time about it for the first couple of week but she's not mentioned it at all for the previous 18 years and so must have accepted it.

Choose the name you like and sod what your MIL wants. She had her chance to pick Roderick for her son. Its your turn now. Why not just have Sandy as a given name or go for something completely different totally un-associated and use Sandy as a nn anyway. It would give your 2nd son his own unique story.

Lucked · 19/04/2014 01:38

I'm with twighlight on preferring Alasdair but I have only ever known Sandy as short for Alexander.

Lysander would work and make sense. Do it!!

ChickenMe · 19/04/2014 08:42

Sebastian is great and goes with your surname. Your mil sounds vile. Just said a silent prayer of thanks for my mil who is a salt of the earth type and would like anything.

KnickyKnacky · 19/04/2014 23:27

Sandy House? No.

Sebastian Brilliant. Ignore your MIL.

Aventurine · 20/04/2014 00:39

Buck?

Aventurine · 20/04/2014 00:44

I think you should wind your Mil up and say you are going for Gary-Darren to be shortened to Gazza-Dazza
