Welsh boy's names

Hi all,

We are expecting a boy and looking for some inspiration for some nice boy's names.

We have a Welsh surname, and I have a Welsh first name. I'm from Wales but live in England, and my husband is born and bred English, so I need a name that he can master with spelling and pronunciation!

I quite like Arwyn, Emrys and Rees (grandfather's name and spelling).

Any ideas would be great!

Dewi! (pronounced dow-ee). Wish I had been allowed to use this.

Also:
Idris
Caradoc

Spindelina · 02/04/2014 08:52

Madoc

Llareggub · 02/04/2014 08:56

Given the diversity of names in schools, I'd go for the name you love rather than one you think people will find easy to say.

Curlyweasel · 02/04/2014 10:25

I had Emlyn on my list. Love that name.

OnEdgeNow · 02/04/2014 11:07

mandbaby · 02/04/2014 12:36

Huw or Osian?

CelticPromise · 02/04/2014 12:41

Dewi isn't pronounced Dow-ee. Unless you are Dewi Morris.

pinkgirlythoughts · 02/04/2014 12:42

my cousins are Lloyd and Rhys

VisualiseAHorse · 02/04/2014 12:48

I know a Taliesyn, Hywel, Dylan, Rees, Deian and Gethin.

Panga63 · 02/04/2014 12:53

Gwylim (is that how you spell it?). I think it sounds like a welsh version of William.

Cezella · 02/04/2014 13:40

Gwilym- nearly correct!

babyfedleaning · 02/04/2014 14:03

How would you pronounce it then Celtic?

I know a bloke by the name of Gerwain Ebenezer too if that helps. Love it.

edamsavestheday · 02/04/2014 14:06

Evan/Ifan is my favourite. Spelled Evan it's easy for English speakers to grasp.

Cezella · 02/04/2014 14:25

Dewi definitely isn't pronounced dow-ee (as in dowelling!!) it's hard to write down in English but it sounds more like this: de-wee (first e sounds like Ellie or egg or Elvis) there isn't as much emphasis on the wi bit as in wee either but it's the closest I can think of!
But definitely not dow-ee!

(Sorry if I sound agressive- I'm really not but Welsh is my first language and I don't know why people choose Welsh names without being sure of how to say them!)

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/04/2014 17:34

Dewi is pronounced like Deh-wee isn't it? That's the only pronunciation I've heard!

Choccywoccydodah · 02/04/2014 17:41

My ds was born in wales (we were there 3 years, inc until he was 1).
We knew we'd move back 'home' at some point so we didn't choose a welsh name as such, but our neighbours son was called Iwan, which we absolutely loved.
Our ds subsequently became Euan (didn't like the Ew spelling). Smile

Choccywoccydodah · 02/04/2014 17:43

I didn't realise Robin (dh) was welsh. Dh will be pleased Smile

CelticPromise · 02/04/2014 18:36

Yes as others have said. De as in the first part of Derek and then wee. Stress on the De.

babyfedleaning · 02/04/2014 20:02

Good job I didn't use it then!

mejon · 02/04/2014 20:03

Diawl, Cezella - ti'n nabod lot o bobol Grin.
