Is Katie too popular?

Thinking of this name for dd2 (but Katherine on birth certificate).

Dd1 has a very unusual but classic name i.e. Juliet

I love that dd1 name isn't in the top 100 and though I love Katie it seems to be getting popular.

I think that Cate looks very odd and a bit 'try hard' different. I like Katherine and Catherine too, nice to give a dd lots of choice for diminutives. I'm not sure it matters having different variations of unusualness for names, my name is very very unusual (never met another) and my sister's names are much more mainstream, but I've never heard them complaining.

Oh no, I'm having second thoughts now.

And I'm 38 weeks, so not long to change.

I love Katherine, classic and elegant like Juliet.

I love Katherine- beautiful. Never met a Katie in RL, so don't think it's that popular tbh Smile

It's fab. Why are you having second thoughts?

I font think it's popular , I think it's old fashioned though and not in a retro/good way.

My DD is a Katherine, and the only one in her school (c200 children).

We do know three other Katies, but they vary in age from 7 through to 10.

I would say round here, it's a name you've heard of, but not inundated with, so not really popular like a Madeline, Isabelle/a, Ellie etc etc...

I have a Katie :-) She's the only one in our area but there is a Katy a few years older. I have an unusual name and hated that so I'm sure like everything else, name popularity is greener on the other side of the fence!

I think Katie is declining in popularity according to the name charts, but as said above I think it's a timeless, 'warm' name.

When did Juliet become a very unusual name? It's just a less commonly used name. Hardly unusual.

Katie is lovely. Katie and Juliet go nicely together for sisters.

Popularity of a name is irrelevant. If you like the name then use it.

I'm a secondary teacher and teach one Katie, in a field of Amelias and Olivias. It certainly doesn't strike me as overused.

I have had Kate/Katy picked out for years. Kate Winlet has been my favourite actress since I was about 8. And I'm a big Katy Perry fan!! (I'm only 20...so that's not as bad as it sounds) hahaha. There are so many beautiful famous Kate/Katherines

Kate Middleton
Kate Moss
Kate Winslet
Cate Blanchett
Kate Hudson
Katy Perry
Kate Upton
Kate Magowan

I just love it. So simple but so elegant.

Katie is the one name where I know multiple bearers. I grew up absolutely surrounded by them; my cousin is Katie, my three closest friends are Katie, I know or have known at least one Katy, Kate, Kitty, Kathy, Cathy, Cate, Cat, Catherine, Katherine, Katharine, Kathryn, Kathleen, Katrina, Katerina, Katia and Ekaterina. And I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

That being said! All of those women are now in their late 20s, and I don't know a single newborn Katherine/Katie. (Caitlyn is another story...) It's a good, solid name with a rich history that might not be as prevalent with the new generation as it was with ours. If you love it, use it.

Katie is ok,as is Kate.

I quite like Kitty, as a nickname.

Juliet is unusual in that only 81 of them were born in 2012. Didn't realise it was that rare.

Great choice - tasteful and gives her lots of options!

Kaite is nice, although quite popular. Prefer it to Kate

I think Katenice name and prefer it to Katie by a long shot but it's so so popular where I am that when I hear of the birth of a baby girl I EXPECT it to be Katie. It's a case of familiarity breeding contempt.

What about Katrina? Then you could shorten it to Katie if you like, but she'd still have a longer / more unusual name.

Like many others, I know LOADS of adults called Kate / Katie, but only one child who is christened Katie.

Choose Juliet if you like it, or Julia

I love Katie, and don't know any little ones (by contrast eight out of 60 girls in my school year were K/Catherine and variants thereof!)

LePetitPont · 03/04/2014 06:42

You could go for Katerina nn Katie. Another feisty Shakespearian lady to go with Juliet!
