Is it:

  • anna as in 'at' without the 't'

Or

-Anna as in 'a'rbitrary?

Sorry not sure how else to explain my question.
Thank you.

It's the first one.

ClementineKelandra · 22/03/2014 07:33

At without the t

MuttonCadet · 22/03/2014 07:33

I'd pronounce it as in at, the first way. But the English language has numerous dialects, you'd have to be very posh to pronounce Anna "Arna" though.

Gunznroses · 22/03/2014 07:33

It's the first one, as in 'at' without the 't'.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 22/03/2014 07:49

If you mean a long or short vowel sound - then it is usually pronounced with the shorter one.

Fridafirefly · 22/03/2014 07:51

Ok so same as 'Anne' just ending with an 'a' then?

TheHappyCamper · 22/03/2014 07:54

I think most people would say it the first way.

This caused all sorts of trouble when we went to see Frozen recently - my DD insisting the character Anna is called Arna due to their pronunciation! "Elsa and Arna!" Grin

In which countries would it be pronounced like Arna then?

Fridafirefly · 22/03/2014 07:56

In Germany where we come from, it's pronounced
'A'nna as in 'a'ctually iyswim. (It's difficult to express in writing.)

Yes,Arna in Germany and Italy as far as I know.

Ah-na :-)

Fridafirefly · 22/03/2014 08:01

Can I ask if there is any horrible chance that the name Anna when pronounced in a 'standard' English way could sound a bit like 'anus'? Blush Grin.

I've killed my thread, haven't i? Blush

people don't always know how to pronounce names

Trooperslane · 22/03/2014 08:06

No. Anna's lovely Smile

No one would say anus.

insancerre · 22/03/2014 08:07

non?
nn

Fridafirefly · 22/03/2014 08:12

insancerre Grin.

It's just so tricky to choose a good name nowadays given that people are likely to work with/be friends with people from a all over the world and a name needs to ideally work in different languages.

Anna in Italy is pronounced the same as Anna in Britain. Just a normal short open "a", like cat, sat, mat.

PotatoPolly · 22/03/2014 08:18

frida I don't think there's any concern over anna and anus... anna is a short vowel sound like 'at' & anus is more of an 'ay' sound, like in 'way' Smile

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/03/2014 09:03

I think Anna would be safe throughout the UK. It's a lovely name.

Bue · 22/03/2014 09:49

As far as I know, Anna is pronounced exactly the same the world over. It isn't "ar-na" in any European language I can think of. This makes it pretty much the ideal name for the global village!

Stat · 22/03/2014 10:01

You can listen to regional pronunciations of Anna here www.forvo.com/search/anna/

I think Anna is easy to pronounce throughout the UK, and is never pronounced with an 'A' as in 'anus'.

mammmamia · 22/03/2014 10:09

Second the comment about disney frozen! My DD keeps saying Arna now. Maybe it's a US thing, that pronounciation?
But yes in the UK always Anna, like apple

badtime · 22/03/2014 10:32

I thought 'Anna' always had the short first vowel sound, and 'Ana' had the long?

diddl · 22/03/2014 10:32

Where in Germany are you from?

Anna here (North) is said the same as UK.

Arne is a man's name!

HavantGuard · 22/03/2014 12:51

Anus is hay minus the h
Anna is Hannah minus the h
