I'm having a dd so need a strong but pretty name to go with Alexander. I've fallen in love with the name Joanne. What do you all think?

Johanne or Johanna much prettier spellings than Joanne or Joanna imo.

Adding the 'h' also changes the pronunciation and makes it slightly 'softer' too, Jo-hann or Jo-hanna rather than Jo-ann or Jo-anna.

Or the German/Scandi pronunciation which is Yo-hanna.

Or maybe even Josefine pron. Yo-sef-fee-neh.

I love the name Josephine, but then it is a 'Little Women' name and will always have a fond place in my heart!

I don't think I was horrible, just pointing out that Joanna was much nicer and more classic, and its a difference of only one syllable/letter. The baby has not been born yet, and she did ask for opinions.

I don't hate Joanne either, there are a LOT of worse names I have seen on here (remember Greylynn??) I just find Joanne completely colourless, as I did back in the 70s when I was going to school with a lot of girls with this name. It is also not primarily because of the perceived 'datedness'. A lot of names that have been called dated on here I still really like, eg Alison, Melanie, Julie. They are all more interesting than Joanne.

But obviously if the OP still loves it she will go ahead and good luck to her. But she did want to see people's reactions, and that's what she got!

My name is Joanne, at first I was unsure, but I really like my name and I'm really unique as a friend. I love it when someone just calls 'Joanne' because I don't have to get confused with the same boring name that their parents were so not unique with like 'Ellie' or 'Tigan' or 'Freya'. Joanne is a beautiful name and she will be loved in a very unique way!❤️🙏🏻

My sister is a Joanne, it suited her as a child and now as an adult. Some of her friends shorten it to Jo but she mainly gets called Joanne.

Firsteverchangeofname · 03/01/2016 15:11

Not keen
Was at school without about 10 in the 70's and 80's along with the Claire's and Sarah's

Zombie thread

DickDewy · 03/01/2016 17:01

No! It's a Sharon or Tracey type name to me.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 03/01/2016 17:02

In my year group every other girl was called Joanne but its very unusual on a baby now a days, perhaps even unheard of so maybe it's due a come back. It's by far not the worse name in the world. I have to say though. Joanna is prettier

AlfieandAnnieRose · 03/01/2016 17:04

THIS IS AN OLD THREAD!!!

SoleSource · 03/01/2016 17:08

Joanne is my middle name and I like it. How Katie Hopkins of you Joanne haters

GingerLDN · 20/01/2016 16:52

Love Joanne

squoosh · 20/01/2016 16:53

This thread is as old fashioned as the name Joanne!

WannaBeAMummy16 · 20/01/2016 17:11

There were a lot of Joanne's when I was at school in the late 90's, early 00's. It's not a name that I have ever been attracted to.

Jw35 · 20/01/2016 17:59

I'm gutted this is an old thread. Just spent ages reading it all grr!

I prefer Joanna. The baby is probably called Joanne!

Botchit · 20/01/2016 18:06

Very ordinary. When there are so many beautiful names to choose from it baffles me that you would go for Joanne.
Born in the late 70's and knew lots of Joanne's growing up. It's had its day and I think unlikely to become popular again any time soon.

Botchit · 20/01/2016 18:07

Damn. An old thread someone decided to revive. The baby will be born and named by now. Pointless.

MadameJosephine · 20/01/2016 18:13

I'm a Joanne although only my mother actually uses my full name and everybody else calls me Jo. It's definitely a 'meh' sort of a name but we did actually consider naming DD Joanna for a while as I much prefer it. I find the addition of an 'a' often lifts an otherwise dull name, for example I also prefer Anna, Julia, Susanna and Sophia to their counterparts.

MadameJosephine · 20/01/2016 18:14

Bugger - I really want to know what she named her baby now!

GingerLDN · 20/01/2016 18:28

Sorry I never seen that it was a old thread! Blush
