I'm having a dd so need a strong but pretty name to go with Alexander. I've fallen in love with the name Joanne. What do you all think?

Ooh, no, sorry. Joanna is better marginally. And, please, don't even consider Chloeanne as that's two names put together, and, therefore, forbidden Wink Josephine is nicer helpful

Seminyak · 10/03/2014 09:03

Really like Joanna, Joanne seems very dowdy though.

feelinlucky · 10/03/2014 09:04

I love Joanne, it's my sisters name and she is lovely. I've never met an unattractive Joanne.

CremeEggThief · 10/03/2014 09:04

I prefer Joanna or Johanna. There was a Joanna in our nursery school last year, so not totally unheard of now.

babyheaves · 10/03/2014 09:04

I like Joanne. I know a lot of very lovely Joanne's and its way better than her being one of a million other of the latest 'revivals'

RoadToTuapeka · 10/03/2014 09:12

I much prefer Joanna. Julianna nice too as is Juliette. Joanne is ok. My mum (mid 60s) is Joanna but was Josie to her close family.

winterhat · 10/03/2014 09:24

I like Joanne and Joanna. They would be refreshing names these days.

liquidstate · 10/03/2014 09:33

My sisters name and its on my list. Not dull at all Hmm.

I also love Marianne which I would shorten to Merry. I love the fact they are not -a or -ia ending names so goes against the current fashion without being weird or stupid.

Burren · 10/03/2014 09:39

Joanna definitely nicer. Joanne makes me wonder whether Abba are still at No. 1. I was born in 1972 and it was the name of about four girls in my primary school class of whom I have no stronger memory. I group it with Karen, Nicola, Linda and Sharon.

EyelinerQueen · 10/03/2014 09:40

It's awful. So dull and dreary.

Baby Joanne will sound like she came out of a time machine from 1984.

I don't know a horrid Joanne either. But they're all called JoJo in my world.

IsItMyArseOrMyElbow · 10/03/2014 09:48

It's my middle name from the 70s, in the same bracket as Jane, Karen, Tracey and Susan in my opinion. Pretty inoffensive and 'normal' names, but dull and a bit dated.

Maybe they will make a comeback, as will Barbara, Brenda and Hilda ... but maybe not Fanny?

UriGeller · 10/03/2014 09:54

Really? You teach a Chloeanne? I can't help reading that as ,"chlo-een" Spectacularly ugly name!

But Joanne, is dull. Like most pps say, Joanna is better, Johanna is better still.

Alexander is a brilliantly strong name, give your daughter something as (if not more) great as Alexander.

wongadotmom · 10/03/2014 10:02

I think Joan is a much stronger name. Surely must be due for a revival soon?

NadiaWadia · 10/03/2014 10:15

How can it be 'timeless' when as far as I know it was unheard of before about the 1960s? It's very 60s/70s. Also not an attractive name, IMO.

Quite like Joanna though.

aGirlDownUnder1 · 10/03/2014 10:44

Joanne is dull and boring. IMO some names should just stay in the 70s

bassingtonffrench · 10/03/2014 11:16

love it!

cattypussclaw · 10/03/2014 11:17

No, please don't. It's the name of my husband's first wife and she is a complete bitch. Probably biased though.

squoosh · 10/03/2014 11:33

If you're looking for a 'sensible' name there are much nicer options out there.

Sarah
Susannah
Alison
Jennifer

I'm Joanna, and, though I was never overly keen on my name I always preferred it to Joanne.

Only problem is, I still get called Joanne a lot. One of my life bugs, 29 years later and it still makes me mad.

Mrswellyboot · 10/03/2014 11:57

Joanna

I second Victoria or Georgia

Also Philippa
