Does anyone know a Bridie? Or a name similar?

I'm wondering if it is short for something? Possibly Bridget which I'm not keen on?

Does it look a bit like Birdie when it is written down?

Are there any similar names out there?

(PS we are just starting TTC, no baby on the way!)

I actually know an Assumpta and a Fidelma.

And a

EyelinerQueen · 08/03/2014 18:23

Gah!

And a Martina and a Majella Grin .

squoosh · 08/03/2014 18:25

Martina is okay (just about) but the rest are just the pits!

Philomena is another one of 'those' names.

Girls from an all Irish background aged 12 called Bridie and Breda?? Not one child at local gaelscoil has a name like that! Tbh, it sounds like something a third or fourth generation irish American would call their child in the belief that it was an irish name. Which it is of course. And I know it will come back. But it's like Peggy or Maura or Pauline. It's needs to rest for a bit longer.

YarnyStasher · 08/03/2014 18:27

I know four Brodies. Two boys and two girls. No Bridies though.

EyelinerQueen · 08/03/2014 18:29

Dympna is pretty bad. I know a few of those.

Attracta?

I went to school with a Domenica. Could never quite understand that one.

squoosh · 08/03/2014 18:30

I'd guess that a group of young Irish girls with names like Bridie/Margaret/Mary would come from a Traveller background. They are still very into the Catholic names.

squoosh · 08/03/2014 18:31

Gobnait is the worst name of all bar none. She is the High Queen of arse ugly names.

Scarletbanner · 08/03/2014 18:42

I love it. The Bridie I know is mid-20s and v glamorous.

I love Bridget as well though, and Maeve. But not Assumpta or Philomena!

MrsGingerbread · 08/03/2014 18:43

Thanks everyone!

I didn't even realise it was Irish (I am in South England with no Irish roots). I knew of a Bridie in Somerset years ago. :)

Fascinated by the pastry connection. Think I might cook a Bridie! You've all made me hungry!

Brody has a different vibe, it's American-sounding. Like Logan or Delaney or Kennedy or something like that.

Scarletbanner · 08/03/2014 18:44

Gobnait?! Really? That's even worse than Waltraute.

LizCurly · 08/03/2014 18:45

Squoosh, ha ha!

Gomez · 08/03/2014 18:47

Yip. My cocker spaniel :-)

No actual humans however.

'tis a lovely name.

HahaHarrie · 08/03/2014 18:49

I love Bridie. Probably because I know two who are lovely, beautiful and very successful. One is a Bridget, but always known as Bridie and the other Bridie is her actual name. Go for it!

KateF · 08/03/2014 18:49

I'm in Bedfordshire. The school takes quite a few children from Irish traveller families as there are a few sites nearby. The children tend to have names from a fairly small pool, the girls names I've mentioned and the boys often called Terry, Billy, Kenny, John or Patrick.

Frontdoorstep · 08/03/2014 18:56

A Bridie is a type of pastry/pie thing where I live so I find the name very odd, I think anyone living where a Bridie is a pie would find the name odd.

I know a few people called Brodie, both boys and girls.

LizCurly · 08/03/2014 19:03

ah that makes sense. No Siofras, Fiadhs, Fraochs or Siuns in the Traveller Community.

LizCurly · 08/03/2014 19:04

yeh, Travellers pick from a small pool of names. but you could never really mock their choices when it comes to names . fishtail wedding dresses covered in sequins but they call their children michael and mary. which are fine names.

sarahquilt · 08/03/2014 19:30

I have an aunt Bride. Her name is Brigid but she's always called Bride.

AveryJessup · 08/03/2014 19:33

Majella! Wow, that's a blast from the past Grin

Imelda is another one. Always reminds me of a girl at school whose nose was always snotty. And the Lovely Girls competition from Fr. Ted of course...

LizCurly · 08/03/2014 19:51

what about Brigidine?

strawberryswing · 08/03/2014 19:55

i'm a Bryony and it sounds very very much like Bridie (not that I would recommend the name Bryony as it's terrible but marginally better than Bridie!)

Minty82 · 08/03/2014 19:59

I had an Irish great aunt called Bridie (Bridget) too! So yes, over 90 to me. I do have a very gorgeous 30 year old friend called Fidelma though, so that one's not in the same category to me!

elliebe13 · 08/03/2014 20:21

It was my friend's horse's name. But I actually love it for a girl :)
