Does anyone know a Bridie? Or a name similar?

I'm wondering if it is short for something? Possibly Bridget which I'm not keen on?

Does it look a bit like Birdie when it is written down?

Are there any similar names out there?

(PS we are just starting TTC, no baby on the way!)

Also know a boy called Brodie.
I like them both

BlondeMalteser · 08/03/2014 13:30

Bryony

Luciferbox · 08/03/2014 13:33

I teach one. Lovely girl

PuppyMonkey · 08/03/2014 13:34

My mum's best friend growing up in Ireland was called Bridie. She died of TB as a teenager,Sad so I always think of it as a quite a poignant name.

YoniMatopoeia · 08/03/2014 13:37

My gran was bridie.

OwlMother · 08/03/2014 13:39

Yes, here in a Edinburgh they're a meat pastry. And it's my Irish MILs name- that always makes me snigger.

goodtimesinbontemps · 08/03/2014 13:47

Here in Ireland Bridie is a real aul wans name and is slang for (ahem) a 'mature' lady usually driving slowly in the middle of the road or something like that . Its short for Bridget btw

Dillydollydaydream · 08/03/2014 13:59

Briony sounds similar.

gamerchick · 08/03/2014 14:02

I know a bridie.. she's about 17 now I think. She was definitely not called bridget.

Lollywig · 08/03/2014 15:55

I love Bridie. It's basically the only name me and DH can agree on. I think it's fine to use in its own right if you're not keen on Bridget, that would be our plan.

Our baby girl is due in 10 wks but the main thing that's holding me back from Bridie is that our surname begins with O. I might need to start a new thread to see off its thought of as cruel to inflict the initials B.O. on our child!

Other than that, for us it's a winner. It's pretty cute, without being cutesy/ too overly girly, in my opinion.

pinkgirlythoughts · 08/03/2014 15:55

I work with a Bridie, mid 30s. As far as I know, it's not short for anything in her case. Also know two Bridgets, one is 28 and the other is 5.

ProfondoRosso · 08/03/2014 15:57

My granny (from Derry) was Bridie, short for Bridget, and she was lovely.

I know it has the pie connotation, but I still really like it!

squoosh · 08/03/2014 16:01

I really, really, really can't begin to imagine a Bridie under the age of 90, but that's just me. The ancient old Bridies I know were baby Bridies at one stage I suppose!

Proudmummytodc2 · 08/03/2014 16:01

I know a Bridie her name is Bridget but everyone calls her Bridie even her kids I don't like either to be honest my grandad who is Irish has loads of woman in his family called Bridie as well it's a very old irish name I think

wigglesrock · 08/03/2014 16:03

No it's a best friend of your grannys name - I'd lump it in with Assumpta, Dymphna, Dolores, Maureen etc. I only know it shortened from Bridget.

2beornot · 08/03/2014 16:17

My niece is a Bridie, not short for anything. I love it! She was named after her great nan who was a Bridget!

AveryJessup · 08/03/2014 16:23

Definitely an oul wan's name!

Bríd is nice - pronounced 'Breed / Breege'. Would love to name any future DD (am 5 weeks pregnant!) Brigid or some variation of it but it wouldn't work with our surname.

NadiaWadia · 08/03/2014 17:50

Old Irish lady.

LizCurly · 08/03/2014 17:52

None under 90. It's a terrible name. The worst most crotchety biddy in all of biddyville would be a Bridie.

squoosh · 08/03/2014 17:59

The sort to tell your mother if you'd skipped mass.

EyelinerQueen · 08/03/2014 18:04

squoosh I'm sure we had this conversation a few months back about Maeve Grin .

I still can't get my head around Bridie for a wee girl. It's just so old fashioned and utterly unattractive to me.

My other old relatives back home include Aggie, Winne, Eileen and Theresa. Are these due a comeback too?!

KateF · 08/03/2014 18:06

dd2 has a Bridie and a Breda in her year so 12 year olds. There is also a Bridget in a lower year group. The girls are all of Irish background as are the girls named Mary, Margaret and Kathleen in the school. I actually like all the names even if they are perhaps more old fashioned than some.

EyelinerQueen · 08/03/2014 18:08

Really Kate?

Whereabouts are you if you don't mind me asking?

ProfondoRosso · 08/03/2014 18:16

That's a list of proper Irish classics there, wiggles! Grin

My mum used to say she wished she'd called me Assumpta. I've been watching Moone Boy and there's a girl in that (who must be 16/17) called Fidelma. I keep thinking of putting it on my potential girls' names list. DH would balk at it but hey, old Catholics die hard! Grin

squoosh · 08/03/2014 18:20

I think we did eyeliner Grin The ghosts of those old bats haunt me still!

Assumpta, Fidelma and Bridie. Yikes, a true coven of witches
