DH wants Michael for a boy. Help me learn to love it

Made a stupid bargain with DH that he gets to choose the boy's name if I get a girl's name I love approved. 30 weeks, don't know what we're having. Tonight he reveals his chosen boy's name and it's Michael after his dad.
His dad's ace and everything but I really have never even considered the name as an option, tbh I don't like it, and am trying to get used to the idea... It would be a lovely gesture though and really there's nothing wrong with it, apart from it not being to my taste.
What could it shorten to? Apart from Mick/Mickey. Mikey? Argh. Anyone really love it? Could you send me some positivity please?

One of my friends has always said the name Michael reminds her of angels ??

sonlypuppyfat · 06/03/2014 22:43

Michael means who is like God so that's not bad is it! It's a wonderful name proper mans name. I love it.

RiverTam · 06/03/2014 22:50

Misha is nice, I hate every other short of Michael (all the adult Michaels I know are just Michael).

I would go for it being a middle name, mainly because that's where I think 'family' names belong.

LydiaLunches · 06/03/2014 23:01

I love it too, I am a student midwife and am detecting a slight return to Richard, David, Peter, Michael etc, they sound really refreshing TBH! Disclaimer, mine all have cutsie geriatric names so no offence meant BlushSmile

LydiaLunches · 06/03/2014 23:01

Proper man's name, exactly Sonly!

MyNameIsKenAdams · 06/03/2014 23:03

I know of a four month of Michael. Maybe its back on the up?

rosieposey · 06/03/2014 23:07

My DH is a Michael and i didn't like it that much ( prefer Mike or Mikey) but DS1 is named Milo and i keep getting them confused ... Mike/Milo.

I must say since i have been married it has grown on me and I must have subconciously named DS1 after his dad as their names nn are so similar.

I agree with the poster upthread - its a nice stalwart and good name :)

Scarletohello · 06/03/2014 23:11

Beautiful classic name. ( bit biased as my favourite boyfriend of all time was called Michael!)

Don't think you can go wrong with those biblical names tho, they'll stand the test of time...

Oriunda · 07/03/2014 06:10

Deal's a deal. We had the same but to the extent that we didn't even discuss our chosen names with each other beforehand. We had a son and DH told me his name when they were sewing me up (DS also named after DH's father). Make sure the middle name is one you choose though.

wigglesrock · 07/03/2014 12:30

It's a very big name in my husband's family - his dad, his brother etc. I have a few cousins called it. I also know a baby Michael. It's a lovely name, no-one I know shortens it - they are all just Michael.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 12:46

Why did you make a deal like that??

MolotovCocktail · 07/03/2014 12:53

Michael is a classic name, IMO. It's the name of one of the archangels (for me, that's a huge plus) and Mikey is a cute nn!

I know an 8mo Mikey and it really suits him.

If you really can't stand the name, change the deal. It has been said, but you may then need to negotiate your girl name, too. Worth it though

Good luck

starlight1234 · 07/03/2014 13:03

I think you need to DH..If you hate it now you always will...

Holliewantstobehot · 07/03/2014 13:09

My ds is Michael after my dad. I love it. He was mikey as a toddler and is now Michael or Mike. I think it's a good strong name.

RalphRecklessCardew · 07/03/2014 13:11

It means 'is like God'. How can you not love that?

squoosh · 07/03/2014 13:15

Throw yourself on his mercy and say you want out of the deal.

Innogen · 07/03/2014 13:26

I think Michael is awful and you should compromise on names. Or find out that you are having a girl.

aufaniae · 07/03/2014 15:29

"It means 'is like God'. How can you not love that?"

Well, many atheists might not be keen for a start ...

WomanScorned · 07/03/2014 15:46

I like it. A young girl I am acquainted with recently named her baby Michael. At first I wondered why on earth she'd chosen that, but it grew on me, especially when I met her adorable little boy. Mikey is great, too. But then, I have a Johnny, after my dad, John, and plan to name my next son Davey, after his grandad Dave/David.

Kaekae · 07/03/2014 15:49

Michael is a lovely name, I have a 20 year old brother called it and he has always received compliments about it especially when he was little. Its a classic.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 07/03/2014 15:53

Michael is lovely. Mikey for a little boy is fab. Mick or Mickle is cool.

If it means a lot to your DH I would smile and be happy.

Now tell us your girl's name :)

fibromum · 07/03/2014 16:20

My DS who is 9 is a Michael. Gets called Mikey or when he was a toddler with very blonde spikey hair he was called Spikey Mikey Smile

It's a great name and he is the only Michael in the class.

dottyaboutstripes · 07/03/2014 16:29

I really don't like it and tbh would never have made a deal like that! I'd be wanting to use it as a middle name and looking for an alternative you both like
