I think it's pronounced "gronya" but I'd defer to someone Irish...

Personally I don't think anyone should be thinking about naming their baby anything they can't pronounce and/or spell themselves!

Hi my gran was Niamh and is pronounced "Nee-ve" but american relatives of mine have named their baby Niamh after my gran but they pronounce it
"Ni-ema" which i thought was nice and different.

why? Niema is a popular american name. no more wrong than any other name, i'm sure half the names around sounded wrong to start with.

well each to their own...half the names around are spelt and pronounced diff ...when niamh is on paper it sure does not sound like neeve and my gran lived with it for 83yrs without people thinking her parents were "daft" and well on the american front theres niema ash the travel writer and americas next top model winner niema who is pretty popular and probably launched a new generation of niemas ..but like i said each to their own!

my daughter's name is Kasia (polish name -pronounced Kasha) When we told sil what we were planning on calling her, sil said "why don't you spell it Kasha" - to which we replied "because her name's Kasia??" She has known how to spell her name since she was 3- so when folk mispronounce it she shouts "no is KASIA - K-A-S-I-A"

PieMama2007 · 04/02/2008 21:35

Niamh is pronounced more or less like "Neev" - it's a lovely name.

Aoife is another lovely Irish name - pronounced "Eefa"

Trouble is, you always have to spell it out for people...

sparklyfairypie · 06/02/2008 01:15
