Prefer Obie to Alfie.

OnlyLovers · 04/03/2014 16:34

Spelt 'Obi' it means sash in Japanese, not 'Obie'. I quite like it, either way.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:34

I have my heart set on it.
Obie James.
Just need to persuade the OH.
I will persuade him Grin

If it's an anglicisation of Japanese then she can spell it however she likes...

I like the meaning as a shortening of Obadiah (which is a name nobody should ever use).

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:42

I agree with you on that! Obadiah is awful.

It's not an anglicisation. Well, you could argue that it's anglicised because you've rendered it into our alphabet rather than the Japanese characters, but to all intents and purposes that's the original Japanese spelling.

squoosh something along the lines of Boba Jango Obi Yoda Anakin Rancor The Hutt Sad

UriGeller · 04/03/2014 17:47

Hobart could be 'Obie'

Innogen · 04/03/2014 19:00

I actually quite like Oberon.

pinkgirlythoughts · 04/03/2014 19:19

I know an Obi, short for Oban. As far as I'm aware, he doesn't get the Star Wars references from other children (but then he is only seven, so plenty of time for that when he gets older, I suppose). I really like it.

chickabilla · 04/03/2014 21:07

I know an Obi, his is a nickname because his initials areOB. First name is Oliver.

OnlyLovers · 05/03/2014 09:20

I like Oberon too. And I LOVE Lysander (for a boy). And Hero (for a girl).

It might be a good thing that I don't have kids and don't plan to. Grin

I sympathise with a desire for a comparatively unusual name (having spent my primary school years with five other girls with the same name in my class), but I do think Obie, with its cutesy sound and specific association with a Star Wars character, overly defines your son.

I came across a little Gandalf about fifteen years ago, and would (minus the 'cute' sound ) see it as having the same problem of having a single, very strong association with a character known to very large numbers from fiction and film.

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/03/2014 19:49

I can see why your DH is proving hard to convince.

I have actually met an Obie in real life. Internally I was Shock Hmm when he told me his name.

ImpOfDarkness · 05/03/2014 20:47

I know an Obhy. His real name is Didier.

florascotia · 06/03/2014 10:24

Not a criticism, but when I first saw 'Obie' I thought 'Oh, is that a short name for Obama?'. Very probably, this isn't an issue. There's much to admire about Mr President and Mrs Obama, too, and by the time your baby is at school, there will be a different US leader.
