I have to say...I don't even think the SW reference is that big a deal anyway.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 15:55

Neither do I personally. I just need to persuade the OH that it wont be a problem

If someone was introduced to me as Obi, I'd assume he was know by his initials O.B.

squoosh · 04/03/2014 15:56

I'd assume his parents were Star Wars nuts and I'd feel sorry for him being saddled with such a niche name.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 15:59

Is it so bad to like Star Wars?

OP posts:
squoosh · 04/03/2014 16:05

I think it's a bad idea to give your child a name that is really only associated with one person or one character.

Obi
Bilbo
Elvis
Adolf

HoratiaDrelincourt · 04/03/2014 16:06

I know a baby Obie. It's had a mixed reception in real life but suits his unusual family.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:08

Isn't it better to only be associated with one other person than have a common name that associates with thousands?

OP posts:
RiverTam · 04/03/2014 16:10

I don't know if he'll be bullied by it, but once he starts school it is the connection every single child will make.

As such, I think it's a quite sweet name for a baby, though I'm struggling to envisage an older person carrying it off.

Your cousins' names will mean very little to the current generation, but Star Wars is known by every generation, and if they make any more, that's going to continue for a looooong time.

IHeartKingThistle · 04/03/2014 16:10

My cat is called Obie.

pictish · 04/03/2014 16:10

I think it's a bad idea to give your child a name that is really only associated with one person or one character.

I do agree with Squoosh on that one. I know a little girl called Arwen for example and I that's a lot to live up to and fall short of, but I don't think Obie quite makes that category somehow.

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 04/03/2014 16:11

I am not letting my OH see this thread.

He's already excited because I may give birth on Star Wars Day if I go overdue, and I've had to put in the birth plan that he isn't allowed to wear his Stormtrooper onesie, say "I am your father" or make lightsaber noises as he's cutting the cord (God I wish I was joking Sad )

If he knew that there is a human alive who thinks "Obie" is a good idea to name a child, there'd be no stopping him.

RiverTam · 04/03/2014 16:11

no, because he'll always be associated with that one person who is far bigger, as such, than he ever will be, unless you're planning on him becoming a fuck-off Jedi knight, in which case, go for it.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:12

Yes I see where you are coming from when he gets older.
It may be a hard one to carry off as a grandad.

RiverTam · 04/03/2014 16:12

I worked with an Aslan once, and it is a cool name, but it's no where like famous a name as Obi.

squoosh · 04/03/2014 16:13

Moomin what would your OH call the child if it was just up to him? Maybe consider breaking the internet, not just in your house but worldwide, until the baby arrives. Just in case.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:17

Might have to go with the OH's boring name of Alfie.

He doesnt like any of my other options
Fenton
Elliott
Caleb
Austin
Jacob

OP posts:
squoosh · 04/03/2014 16:19

Your other name choices are better than Obie and Alfie.

RiverTam · 04/03/2014 16:21

Alfie's nice, but it's certainly not unusual!

I like Elliott, Caleb and Jacob from your list, but again, nowt unusual (if that's what you're after) about any of them either.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:22

Exactly.
My aim is unusual, he likes common names.
Its a struggle.

Obi is a Nigerian name, so if you regard something being 'a black name' as a disincentive to use it, avoid.

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:26

Its actually japanese for sash

becki93 · 04/03/2014 16:28

The way I would spell it
Obie meaning and name origin

Obie \o-bie\ as a boy's name is a variant of Obadiah (Hebrew), and the meaning of Obie is "servant of God".

MerryWinterfel · 04/03/2014 16:28

Love Oberon with Obi for short, especially if born on the 4th!

IamMrsElf · 04/03/2014 16:31

I like the name and my first thought was O.B. from Hollyoaks. The Star Wars thing genuinely didn't cross my mind - and I love Star Wars!

Could you give him a slightly more usual name beginning with O middle name B and then call him Obi - that way he has a really cute name when he is little but as he grows he has something more dignified?

I love the name Oscar...just a suggestion.

I think Grandad Obi is also cute and would suit an older person.
