I kinda think it's entertaining that nobody likes our girls name suggestion ( well ok it's dh's ..I hate disagreeing with him ALL the time so iv told him I'll go with this one if he wants)

Ivory / Ivorie

I'm guessing you'll comment to say you don't like it ...just explain why pls.
Ivory Rowan Q

Because it's not a name.
Because it calls to mind thoughts about elephant poaching, piles of tusks being destroyed, and the song Ebony and Ivory which is terminally naff.
In addition, if your surname begins with a Q, you might want to rethink choosing a first name that begins with an I. IQ is a fearsome set of initials to have to live up to.

It's nice, but like others I can't get past the white/black thing...though if I met you and had this conversation in real life it may go very differently. Your values, friends, community and child's appearance (I know a white, blond haired blue eyed girl called Raven...always seems odd, whereas it would make perfect sense in my head if she was black or had dark hair, iyswim) will all shape how your child's name is perceived much more than the name in isolation.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2014 08:01

I'll be go in

BelleStar · 08/03/2014 08:07

I know an Ivory. When you think of the word ivory you think of all the things the word means. When someone says "My name's Ivory" you say "nice to meet you" and carry on! I've never thought about tusks, elephants, white supremacy etc when talking with or about my friend. However it's probably worth noting that she is black, so maybe that makes a difference on the white supremacy thoughts!

smokeandglitter · 08/03/2014 09:09

I love it.

My friends sister was called Ivory at school. She was a lovely girl and it reminds me of her.

vichill · 08/03/2014 09:55

although its a nice sounding word its not a name, to me its an elitist commodity born from cruelty and death. fgs don't.

FetchezLaVache · 08/03/2014 10:05

Well, I guess you've got your answer, OP!

NB Don't go with your husband's choice of name if you don't like it just because you don't want to be always disagreeing with him. It's not like compromising over roast potatoes with your dinner instead of mash, it's a huge decision, you both have to love it. I would seriously reconsider this name, esp in conjunction with Rowan- just doesn't flow at all.

Topaz25 · 08/03/2014 11:19

Sorry, I would also think of ivory poaching and white supremacy, both unpleasant associations. I love the name Rowan though and it works for a boy or a girl, I know a girl named Rowan. Maybe have that as the first name instead? If you like the sound of Ivory, a similar sounding name with a nicer association like Ivy might be a good compromise.

lljkk · 08/03/2014 11:30

Girls are often named after gemstones & colours, Ivory is the same to me as Ruby, Opal or Ebony.

The only Ebony I know is a White girl. Never struck me as strange, everyone around here is white!

lljkk · 08/03/2014 11:31

ps: Avery is definitely a boy's name in my mind.

Topaz25 · 08/03/2014 12:12

I don't see ivory as a gemstone, it's an animal body part, more like bone. Also, although I know suffering can be involved in the mining of gems there are conflict free gems whereas ivory can only be produced by killing elephants so I have much more negative associations with the name ivory than a gemstone name.

Topaz25 · 08/03/2014 12:13

I don't like colour names like Ebony either.

Misspilly88 · 08/03/2014 21:17

I would also think of the white supremacy thing!

honeybeeridiculous · 08/03/2014 21:39

I know of a black African girl called Ivory Confused, can't say I like it TBH,
Also, I went to school with a girl called Rowan (in the 80's) but she pronounced it Ro-Anne
I love Ivy though unhelpful

MrsTamkin · 14/04/2014 23:47

Of course Ivory is a name!!!! If you like it I say go for it

confuddledDOTcom · 14/04/2014 23:58

And this thread is why I don't tell people my names! Nothing wrong with either name IMO (and afterall that's all anyone can say!)

BTW - is "our" Rowan male or female? I've seen it debated on here... Nothing wrong with it for a girl anyway.

ToffeeJungle · 15/04/2014 13:48

Don't like it either - never heard of it as a name before.

I know an Ebony though! And Ivy, Isis and Iris are nice!

thegreylady · 15/04/2014 14:04

Anyone who thinks Rowan is just for boys hasn't read Antonia Forest's Marlowe books :)
Ivory is quite nice I've heard a lot worse :)

funnyoldonion · 15/04/2014 15:56

Horrid

Think elephants slaughtered, whole families leaving their babies to die alone (if they weren't killed too), just for their tusks, their Ivory.

Ivy is nice. Avery is ok. Pick something similar instead?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/04/2014 21:20

Rowan Ivory flows better because the Rs are separated.

Tranquilitybaby · 17/04/2014 23:50

Well I like it! X

CrockedPot · 17/04/2014 23:53

Dead elephants here too, sorry.

jazzyjenbo · 18/04/2014 12:21

My first thought was i love 'ivory' .. To me it reminds me of weddings, lace, clean linen, freshness..(i didnt think elephant or white supremacy)

It was actually a name i though of on my last baby list (baby wasnt to be so thats why we didnt use)

I also like rowen but for a boy and ivor.

I would definitly consider ivory if i had a girl in the future.
