I kinda think it's entertaining that nobody likes our girls name suggestion ( well ok it's dh's ..I hate disagreeing with him ALL the time so iv told him I'll go with this one if he wants)

Ivory / Ivorie

I'm guessing you'll comment to say you don't like it ...just explain why pls.

Rowan does indeed mean 'red' or 'little red' or 'little red-haired'. It's the English-language version of a Gaelic word.

In Celtic myths, Rowan is male - the son of the goddess Brigit.

It is sometimes used for girls, but, speaking purely personally, I'm not keen on boys names for girl babies. But clearly some people don't mind. That's up to them entirely.

mojo1981 · 03/03/2014 20:28

I think if u like it then u should use it, who cares what other people think? People only generally comment with a negative rather than a positive. So there maybe lots of people who have read this and liked it but not said anything for fear of being shot down by others. I have a name for my daughter due in a few weeks that not many people liked on here but 90% of the people (not on mums net) I have told. It to have said they like it , some might be humouring me but most seemed genuine.

So if u like it use it.... It's your child... No one else's.

SummerRain · 03/03/2014 20:33

My thoughts on reading the word, in order:

elephant tusk... poaching... dead elephants and walruses... narwhal tusks... narwhals being harpooned by hunters... carved statues... white supremists... ebony and ivory (the band)...

At no point did an image of a little girl or a grown woman enter my thought processes.

That's what your daughter will have to contend with for her entire life with that name

mojo1981 · 03/03/2014 21:53

Yes or they could just think or say.... Oh that's a nice different name....

HoratiaDrelincourt · 03/03/2014 21:55

They could, and most people with manners wouldn't pass comment. But that reasoning could be used for someone who likes the sound of Chlamydia or Myra and wants to name a daughter. Words/names aren't just sounds if they also mean things to people.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 03/03/2014 21:57

Avery is very nice.

tallulah · 03/03/2014 22:21

I came across Ivory as the main character in a book and expected to love it, but actually it has a really clunky sound.

Ivy Rowan sounds much nicer.

Leeds2 · 03/03/2014 22:39

Just don't. Avery is much nicer.

I like Rowan. I always think of it as a girls' name rather than boys'. Personally, I prefer it for a girl.

eddielizzard · 03/03/2014 22:41

i personally find it doesn't roll off the tongue.

avery does, but i don't like that as much.

rowan is lovely although i thought that was a boy's name?

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 03/03/2014 22:45

Why is it ok to use 'ebony' as a name?

I know some some who called her son ' Blu' Hmm

Ivory reminds me of an old spinster

ashtrayheart · 03/03/2014 22:48

I know of an 'Ebony'. Ivory makes me think of dead elephants Sad

PipkinsPal · 03/03/2014 22:49

Makes me think of a piano. Will boys be tinkling Ivory's?

donttrythisathome · 03/03/2014 22:51

It's just so unusual that it throws people I guess. If you like it use it. I was thrown when I met an Ebony, but after the first few seconds, never really thought about it again except to think how much it suited her.

White supremacist?! Lol, wouldn't occur to me! And it's a far cry from calling her chlymadia!

NoMoreMarbles · 03/03/2014 22:56

I agree with others on the elephant killing/white supremacist connotations,SorryBlush

How about Avery or Ivy as similar sounding names? Smile FWIW I think Avery is beautifulSmile

Passthesaltdear · 03/03/2014 23:00

Makes me think of poor elephants having their tusks sawn off and made into piano keys...negative associations for me

mymatemax · 03/03/2014 23:04

I would always think Ebony & Ivory
Similar to Mahogany, more of a material than a name.

Chloerose75 · 03/03/2014 23:09

I agree re elephant poaching and white supremacy .

I do like Rowan.

If you want something similar to ivory in sound, how about Avery, Evelyn, ivy, Ava...

Tattiesthroughthebree · 03/03/2014 23:18

Ivory appears in negative news stories about the "Ivory ban" or the "bloody Ivory trade" etc etc. At some point your DD would see her name in an unpleasant headline.

Oriunda · 04/03/2014 08:09

Ivory - white, elephants' tusks, poaching
Ivorie - parents can't spell

Either way not a name.

EasyCompadre · 04/03/2014 08:14

Avery is almost exactly the same in sound, but the connotations are so much nicer. Would DH be persuaded to change ivory just a little into Avery? For the sake of his little girl? Wink

HoratiaDrelincourt · 04/03/2014 08:18

Ooh Avery is much better.

Falls foul of several MN "rules" but it is actually a name, and doesn't have bloodthirsty connotations.

RalphRecklessCardew · 04/03/2014 08:28

I'm with SaggyOld, Avery is better.

I can sort of see your DH's point. Ivory is a beautiful thing and there have been many lovely things made of it. I suppose you could argue that it's no more tainted with cruelty than diamonds are, but, well, it does make me think of dead elephants too.

If you wanted to go completely ridiculous, how about 'chryselephantine'? Means 'made of gold and ivory'.

Oriunda · 04/03/2014 08:31

Mojo if I like a name I will say so. Much easier to give opinions when it is anonymous. If someone in real life asked me I'd be more diplomatic or probably say nothing/agree it was nice weakly.

BirdintheWings · 04/03/2014 08:40

I thought Avery was a boy's name? It is in Charlotte's Web (I think).

We know an Ebony as well! There must be a few of them about.

Would DH like Romilly or Mallory, Elodie, Jodie?

Scuttlebug · 04/03/2014 09:29

Ooooo, go and tickle the ivories! Isn't that slang for playing piano? Seriously, wouldn't go for it, it also sounds like you could be saying "I've Ree"...sorry you've got what??
