Alexandra or Norah

Baby has already arrived and still without a name. Norah is husbands choice and Alexandra is mine I think. Husband has left it totally up to me as together we don't seem to be able to come to a decision. I think Alexandra is the safe option as I think Norah is abit out there and might provoke a negative response in family and friends. Just wanted to see what others thought.

Isn't Nora usually spelt without an 'h' at the end?

My first thought is to say 'Nora Batty' tbh, as is my dcs (before people say it's an age thing) as wrinkly tights are just known as "Noras" or "Nora Battys" whatever your age.

So, I much prefer Alexandra, myself.

Alexandra

MrsGingerbread · 23/02/2014 00:41

Congratulations! :)

I like them both, Alexandra has lots of lovely nns - Lexi, Alex, Andi..... Do you have one of these that you like as it is likely to get shortened.

Vijac · 23/02/2014 00:42

I love Alexandra. Norah fine.

MrsGingerbread · 23/02/2014 00:42

I thought of Batty and Jones with Norah...

Orangeisthenewbanana · 23/02/2014 00:43

I like them both. Alexandra just wins though. Also definitely Nora without the "h"

squoosh · 23/02/2014 00:45

I much prefer Nora (without the H). It reminds me of Nora Barnacle, James Joyce's wife and muse.

Alexandra is perfectly inoffensive but I think it's quite dull and I favour names that have two syllables or less.

squoosh · 23/02/2014 00:47

Also, I aim to be a Nora Batty in old age, still setting male hearts aflutter, but my tights and I won't take any crap from anyone!

StrawberryCheese · 23/02/2014 00:48

I like Norah. Either with or without the 'h'. There's the singer/song writer Norah Jones as a more modern example than Nora Batty Grin

Alexandra is very nice too, classic and as said above, lots of nn options.

HuggleBuggleBear · 23/02/2014 00:49

I also prefer Norah without the h. My husband likes it with the h as in Norah Jones.

Other names in the running have been Annie, Alice, Jess, Meg.

I just can't see us deciding any time soon.

Congratulations.

I prefer Alexandrina to Alexandra.

Leeds2 · 23/02/2014 00:49

Alexandra.

If I were to have a Nora/h, I would spell it Norah.

squoosh · 23/02/2014 00:49

Nora Ephron was another brilliant Nora.

C'mon the Noras!

IHeartKingThistle · 23/02/2014 01:05

I think Norah is gorgeous.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 23/02/2014 01:08

I like both

But if you are still undecided - Alexa? Megan? Alicia? Naomi? Anya?

chigmum · 23/02/2014 01:13

I really like both, Alexandra - Classic.
Nora much more unusual and therefore interesting.

My decider would be what you think would look best on an application form or a CV and therefore the winner has to be Alexandra.

Good luck with your new baby.

Chloerose75 · 23/02/2014 01:21

Surprised by negative comments on Norah. I think it is very nice. I think Norah jones and also the film nick and Norah... Alexandra is also lovely but I like the full name and think it would be shortened, personally I'm not so keen on Alex, Lexi etc.

PrincessSophieSoph · 23/02/2014 01:26

Congratulations!! I love Alexandra (I have a very good friend with that name so am probably biased!) like Norah with the H too though Smile xx

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 23/02/2014 01:28

I love Norah, but how about Eleanor, with Nora as a nn as an option?

anothernumberone · 23/02/2014 01:31

My very best friend as a small child was called Nora Mary aka Norma I love that name.

cityangel · 23/02/2014 01:32

What about meeting half way:
Eleanor, Elin, Eliora, Alyssa, Alessa, Alexia, Natasha, Clara, Cara, Flora, Orly, Freya, Iona, Leora, Imogen, Zara ...

LucieLucie · 23/02/2014 01:32

Definitely Alexandra. Norah is just a bit weird IMO Grin congrats

Norah or Nora is lovely. Alexandria is ok

BirthdayMuppet · 23/02/2014 20:33

Norah with the h is lovely, and I rather like Norah Alexandra together too!
