Does this work?? Also is it bad that my mother Inlaw is called Joanne and her cat is called Millie. I can see past it as I love the name but not sure the family will xx

ladymia · 22/02/2014 21:29

No, I don't like hyphens they really dumb down the name.

scarletforya · 22/02/2014 21:38

Op, honestly it's awful. Nurseries are heaving with Millies and Tillies. Jo is just dated and doesn't flow well with Milly.

LynetteScavo · 22/02/2014 21:38

Hahaha MrsBungle!

In that case maybe Josh J is Josh-Jay. Grin

Davidhasselhoffstoecheese · 23/02/2014 20:15

When I first saw the name, the Michael jackson song 'billy jean is not my lover' popped into my head! Millie-Jo is awful sorry. Millie and Jo are both ok on their own though Millie-Jo would live on a rough estate and mix with a bad crowd.

Davidhasselhoffstoecheese · 23/02/2014 20:17

What about calling the baby Emily Josephine and then you can call her milly Jo as a nick name.

BirthdayMuppet · 23/02/2014 20:36

I don't like any of the 'ee' sounding names - Poppy, Milly/Millie, Daisy etc, and I don't particularly like Jo either. My first thought was also Billie-Jo Jenkins. However Emily Josephine suggested above is not bad and would give you options to use Millie as a nn?

dustarr73 · 23/02/2014 20:53

How about Millicent Joanne nn Millie

Puddles1234 · 23/02/2014 20:58

Millie Jo?! Sounds like a child from a council estate.

If you like Millie how about Camilla or Millicent?!

EirikurNoromaour · 23/02/2014 21:07

Puddles, that's an awful comment.

JellyMould · 23/02/2014 21:15

Sorry, but no, you CANNOT give your child a name that's combines your mil's name and her cat's name. In fact, you can't use the cats name IMO.

Oldtimer1 · 23/02/2014 21:16

WTF?

Are you for real Puddles?

ProfondoRosso · 23/02/2014 21:21

Oh Lord, children from council estates - run for the hills Waitrose Ma! Hmm Seriously unpleasant comment.

I'm not a fan of either name, but find Millicent a heck of a lot worse than Millie. Not everyone wants a name from the John Lewis acceptable list, you know.

Thumbcat · 23/02/2014 21:26

I think all puddles has done is pinpoint the exact reason why hyphenated names never go down well on frightfully middle class MN. Or are we going to pretend otherwise?

usualsuspect33 · 23/02/2014 21:34

Some of us are not frightfully MC though.

Some of us live on ,Shock, horror, council estates.

Thumbcat · 23/02/2014 21:59

Yes I live on a council estate too. But there is a reason why hyphenated names are so hated on mumsnet and puddles has, not very tactfully, named it.

usualsuspect33 · 23/02/2014 22:09

I'm aware of why she said it.

She's a snob.

EirikurNoromaour · 23/02/2014 22:15

I don't believe it's snobbery exactly. I think hyphenated names are in juvenile taste and lack sophistication. I also think that about names that are shortenings of traditional names such as Archie, Alfie, Millie. They are all of a similar type to my mind. I don't think it's about being uneducated or less well off, or whatever 'council estate' is being used to signify in this context. I know plenty of middle class children with silly, cutesy names and I don't like them either.

NigellasDealer · 23/02/2014 22:16

Billie-Jo is better IMO do you like that?

EirikurNoromaour · 23/02/2014 22:18

Betsy, Elsie, those types are equally cringy to me for the same reasons and they are more commonly MC names.

usualsuspect33 · 23/02/2014 22:18

Maybe Puddle would like to come back and explain her comment.

I can see no other reason for it apart from snobbery.

MolotovCocktail · 24/02/2014 12:16

Hold the phone: "hyphenated names are in juvenile taste and lack sophistication" Hmm

What about French names such as Ann-Sophie? Jean-Luc?

And yes, the council estate comment was low.

That's just my opinion Molotov. And I'm talking about the cultural context which we are in here, not France or anywhere else.

dozily · 24/02/2014 12:44

Some of these replies are downright cruel. If I was the OP I would probably be in tears Sad

MolotovCocktail · 24/02/2014 12:54

Okay Eirik you are indeed entitled to your opinion. To say hyphenated names lack sophistication is unfair, I think, hence the examples I gave. I honestly think it's the name combinations, rather than the conjuction itself of names, that is the heart of whether a name sounds 'sophisticated', 'classy', or whatever.

It speaks volumes of how the OP must be feeling as she haa not returned to her own thread.
