Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

ZingSweetApple · 08/02/2014 17:27

"Ariel the little mermaid" is one of my favourite films though.

givemeaclue · 08/02/2014 17:28

So sexist. How about a name that is adventurous, bold, fun, rather than sweet and pretty

ZingSweetApple · 08/02/2014 17:29
Hmm

and the fun is gone

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 08/02/2014 17:32

Read the whole thread, givemeaclue.

Shallishanti · 08/02/2014 17:45

Ursula a fantastic name- who wouldn't want to be a bear?- was quite tempted by it myself- but she is also in Women in Love and can't recall what kind of character she was in that. Whereas the heroine of a popular children's novel (if I have guessed right) is a great role model.
I think the meanings of names are important, as well as the associations they carry. But you can't always tell what associations OTHER people will have unfortunately. Eg I have a dd named after a civil rights heroine but apparently to some it's a girly name Shock
DD is not girly!

Mintymoomoo · 08/02/2014 17:49

Arohaitis and Lizlemon I totally agree with you you on Lola, from my experiance Lola is what lots on here would class as middle class and trashy around the area I live

givemeaclue · 08/02/2014 18:25

Empress, I had read whole thread before posting thanks

middleclassdystopia · 08/02/2014 18:31

Nice to know feminism is alive Hmm

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 08/02/2014 18:32

Oh ok sorry - so you saw the bit about the OP's daughter being adventurous, bold and fun, that's all right then. BTW. I agree with you, much better than being sweet and pretty!

MerryWinterfel · 08/02/2014 18:51

Margaret (Daisy for short)
Elizabeth (Libby/Beth/Lizzie)
Catherine (Kitty/Katie)

All are strong adult names with cute girly nick names, tick both boxes.

MerryWinterfel · 08/02/2014 18:52

Lydia
Phoebe

HermioneWeasley · 08/02/2014 18:53

I've read the whole thread and I still don't understand why the OP wants sweet girly girl names. Perhaps she doesn't expect her daughter to grow into a woman?

Suggestions

Kitty
Twinkle
Princess pinky pants
Fluffy-Scrumptious
Honey
Beautiful
Blondeykins

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 08/02/2014 18:58

But she doesn't. She posted higher up to say she nearly called her DD Lucy, which she associates with sweet girly girls, but decided it didn't suit her, and she has a terrific DD who lives in her wellies and likes mud and trees and stuff.

Mintymoomoo · 08/02/2014 19:50

Hermioneweasley if you read my post then you would see that I wasn't saying that I wanted a pretty girly name, I was saying that I love Lucy and I associate that with lovely, pretty, girl girls as in my personally experiance the ones are know are... I also stated that they are also all hugely susscesful business women in there own right and are certainly not " Wet"

I was asking more for suggestions what other people would consider as "sweet girly names" as I know that some of the names I would other people wouldn't and that's been shown in this post with things like Lola ect!

So yes it does appear that names that I do like pretty famine names that doesn't mean I don't expect my dd not to grow up or have a right to vote etc! I was mearly asking for suggestions on what others points of view were

ZingSweetApple · 09/02/2014 06:27

Merry

DD is Elizabeth.
she is not yet 2 and her current nickname is "Jedi Leia" as she loves wielding her brothers' lightsabers!
and she is getting pretty good at it!Grin

the only girly thing about her is the dresses she wears!Wink

mammabear4 · 09/02/2014 08:12

No idea why some people bother to post such unhelpful comments, think they need to get a life instead of getting all high and mighty about a thread on a baby names forum... One that they've clearly not even read properly...
I would associate "pretty girly girl" with:
Lucy
Abigail
Florence
Eleanor
Kitty
Martha
Evie
Rosie
Chloe
Beatrice
Alice
Dinah (don't see that one around much?!)
Clara
Jemima
Bethany
Annie
Jessica
Olivia
Sophia
Amelia
Gracie
Poppy
Ruby

In fact the more I think about it the more I think it's the NAME that is pretty and girly, which is probably why a few I've included are in the top 10!
A few of the names I've included are actually in my short list too.

I don't think it's anything to do with a lack of feminism that some people would like their daughters to have "pretty" names, whether they end up being girly or being a tomboy at the end of the day names are personal preference - I personally am not keen on "strong" names or "unisex" names such as Samantha, Danielle, Roberta etc, but who am I to say it's wrong for others to like them?

People are entitled to their opinions but it seems to me that a lot of posters on here are more preoccupied with slagging off other people's choices and telling them they're wrong. If you're one of those people please stop wasting the time of those who come on here looking for advice and/or a good discussion. Nothing wrong with saying "I personally am not keen but if you like it...!"

Mintymoomoo · 09/02/2014 09:06

Mammabear4 totally like lots of the names on your list and agree I do associate them with pretty, feminine names, even though I agree that they are some are just not names that I would use but I certainly wouldn't slag you off for having them on your list, like you say each to there own! I don't expect everyone to like my names but I don't understand why people come on these friends slating the poster for just asking what ithers think

I also am not keen on "strong or unisex names like you but if others love them then good for them I'm pleased they have names they like

Love Jedi Leia Zing! :)

On the theme of names we associate with girlie cuteness etc I chose a name like the ones I suggested that has short versions that can be girlie or strong, worked well for us and DD has ended up with a very strong name.

ZingSweetApple · 09/02/2014 10:21

you know merry when I was pg with her our boys wanted to name baby "Yoda"!
Yoda Shark for a boy, Yoda Yogurt for a girl!Grin

Which is probably why children are not allowed to make real decisions!Wink

MerryWinterfel · 09/02/2014 17:43

:)

SicknSpan · 09/02/2014 20:32

As if a name defines a person or their achievements and aspirations! Silly posters.

How about Amelia, Sophia, Lisette, Claudine, Polly, Patience (Patch for short - so cool!), Bethany, and my fave at the moment - Seren. Means star I think in welsh, beautiful.

Mintymoomoo · 09/02/2014 22:14

Spickandspan my dd2 is Amelia! I love Seren

MerryMarigold · 09/02/2014 22:20

Cecily, Melissa, April

Names do have bearing though.

I described earlier my niece who is a big tattooed lesbian PhD engineer.
A wonderful woman who I admire greatly.

My sister longed for a very girly sweet child and wanted to give her a pretty fluffy name.

My niece is called Tinkerbell which as you can imagine doesn't go down too well on the building sites where she works.
