Thoughts on Eleanor

I named DS and we agreed that DH would name DD and he's come up with some right ugly names!

Eleanor is the only one I can handle from his list but I really can't see my daughter being called Eleanor. in all honesty, I don't like it. I don't refer to DD as Eleanor and it winds DH up.

Please help me like this name because he's sticking with it.

I quite like your list but hate his.

Eleanor is lovely. It's nice spelled Elinor as well. I know an Eleanor who calls herself Elle, which is another nickname option.

Maybe you could call her Eleanor and use Elsie, from your list, as the nickname as a compromise?

Dd2 was going to be Eleanor. She ended up with Ellen but is always called Ellie. Its a lovely name. I like Ruth too from your list. Wanted it for dd1 but dh didn't like it. She is Rosie instead.

My Eleanor is Eleanor or Elle, she hates Ellie and Ella. I love Eleanor, beautiful, strong classic.

I like Eleanor, but not Ellie. I knew an Eleanor at school who was Nell, and like that.

Would he compromise?
Do you like Elena?
You can pronounce it either El-en-a (with extra pronunciation on the EN part) or Elen-a so it's similar.

I'd have liked DD2 to have been Esther, but it was DH's turn here too. Fortunately I do like his choice, but Esther would have been rarer.

Eleanor is lovely, it's just spoilt for me by DD knowing two Eleanor s and an Elsie, who all insist on Ellis. I get very confused.

I think Eleanor is a lovely name. Ellie feels a bit ubiquitous at the moment though. Discounting his made up ones, I don't think the 2 lists are radically different in feel in places. There's definitely compromise available there. Fwiw, I like Lydia, Ruth and Esther. Darcey and Isla are v popular at the mo, so I wouldn't want those. I think Eleanor nn Elsie is a good bet.

I do love Eleanor - I knew both an Elena and two Eleanor's when I was in school, both Eleanor's went by Eleanor as far as I knew and the Elena typically went by Elena (hated Ellie but was called it by random people who presumed that is what she would be) and all of them would be something like El or Els at times. I would personally opt for the Eleanor spelling just because I adore it.

We have an Eleanor in the family. She is a very lovely Eleanor. Not an Ellie.

We also have a Lydia who is graceful and lovely too. Bit upset to hear these names described as 'ugly'.

Not very tactful.

Eleanor/Elinor is gorgeous. I find Ellie boring, but sounds like it's a good compromise for you.

Eleanor is lovely. If you choose Ellie, they'll likely be loads in her class as Ellie, Ella etc are very very popular. Even more so 3-4 years ago. Ellie is also commonly used in the ellie- May, Ellie- Ann etc names. If doubting Eleanor, the fact it can be shortened to Ellie would further put me off.

Lydia and Ruth are nice from the first list but the vast majority of the second list are hugely popular if that would put you off? How about Evelyn, Nancy, Madeline etc if he likes older names?

Would your dh consider Alienor (there's an accent on the e but I can't figure out how to do it on iPad!) it's the French version of Eleanor, bit more unusual and nn ally? Or Eilidh, a lovely Scottish name that has something in common with both your choices and your dh's.
I'm just impressed your dh has come up with a list. Mine usually says one name he likes then refuses to budge even after I've told him why it cannot be (eg name of my ex BIL/name that rhymes with name of our ds1 - ARGH!) it's not even because he loves the name in question, it just gets him out of any further discussion.

I have an Elinor (Jane Austin Spelling)...we call her Nellie, mainly because if you stood in a softplay in our part of the country (Farnham)and shouted "Ellie" every second child would turn round.

I think Eleanor is a lovely name with nn Ella but I love Lydia more from his list. Beautiful name and I would have used it but my friend beat me to it.

I like Eleanor but prefer Elena.

However I don't like Ellie (anymore) - it is way overused imo.

I have an Eleanor - she is beautiful. She is also Ellie to her friends and some family.

I like the names your DH picked. Particularly Eleanor and Ruth, those were the names of my grandmothers. They're classic names.

I have an Eleanor. She loves her name and gets furious if anyone shortens it to anything else. I think it's a timeless, beautiful name, very regal.
