What do you think about Emmet?

Loved it when we decided on it, but as DS's arrival draws nearer (due in Feb), I am getting nervous about our choice. We want something friendly but strong, and not too common. Ugh, I think I've thought too much about it and now I can't get a fresh head, if you know what I mean.

Hyacinth Bucket here, too. It's an unattractive, weak, effeminate name.

I love Emmet. I also know an Emmett, which I prefer spelling wise. On my short list if we have another boy!

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2014 03:50

Hmm. It's OK but better spelled Emmett. Elliott is nicer though.

saintlyjimjams · 03/01/2014 03:51

Cornish for grockle. I wouldn't use it down 'ere.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/01/2014 04:11

Really like it. But we go to Cornwall a lot so I couldn't use it :)

MummyBeerest · 03/01/2014 04:24

I like it...but I'm not British. Which probably doesn't help. Sorry!

NakedTigarCub · 03/01/2014 05:22

I like it but im a twilight fan Grin

lisianthus · 03/01/2014 05:30

It's a family name for me- have a great grandfather with the name.

It was in my list for a boy.

elQuintoConyo · 03/01/2014 05:45

It has a horrble sound, like grommet.

Plus, I immediatly thought:
Back to the Future
Twilight

Sorry, you did ask Thanks

FigEater · 03/01/2014 05:53

Ant. But then actually being called Ant works for Ant, so why not.

Havinganose · 03/01/2014 05:59

Love it
Was on my list

ch1134 · 03/01/2014 10:51

No way, it's a derogatory term in Cornwall for a tourist. 'Bloody Emmets'

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/01/2014 10:53

It's not that it means ant, it's that it's derogatory.

hoppinghare · 03/01/2014 10:55

Nice. I like it.

Brussel · 03/01/2014 10:55

I like it with one or even 2 Ts, but then I associate it with a very nice Irish Emmet I know.

Beachballfamily · 03/01/2014 10:57

I like it, see it as very American (quite popular there). I've only ever seen it spelt with two t's at the end though.

noitsachicken · 03/01/2014 11:05

I think of the Twilight vampire. Its a nice name though.

MetellaEstMater · 03/01/2014 11:37

First thought was Dr Emmet Brown - cool...
Second was Keeping Up Appearances - weak...

I'd wager that very few people of your son's generation will come across Hyacinth Bucket though, whereas Back to the Future will always be a classic.

BrownPaint · 03/01/2014 11:42

I like it...

squoosh · 03/01/2014 12:01

I automatically think of Robert Emmet and I quite like it, know a fair few Irish men with this name. None of them weak or effeminate.

Just depends what your associations are I suppose.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/01/2014 12:27

Not keen. Keeping Up Appearances ....

BuffyxSummers · 03/01/2014 12:29

You may find people automatically assume Twilight fan. But if that doesn't bother you, it won't be an issue. I wanted Bella for a while but didn't want the "oh because of twilight?" every time I met someone!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 03/01/2014 12:34

It's an OK name, it does immediately make me think of Keeping Up Appearances, but I doubt your DS will be too bothered about that!

It's not one I would choose myself but it's not awful.

Not at all helpful, sorry!
