Irrational dislike of a name?

looki · 02/01/2014 10:25

I have an irrational dislike of the name Katie. I think its due to Katie being so commonly used where I live that when a name is announced, it is almost surprising if it doesn't contain the name Katie. Yet I quite like the name Kate/Cate.

Anybody else have dislike one name but like something very similar?

I love Katy, lol.
Joshua makes me cringe. Boring.
A lot of MN favourites that belong in the 19th century make me cringe, too.

TheBookofRuth · 04/01/2014 08:12

I don't like Louise, but like Louisa. I dislike Helen (especially as I was bullied by one at school), but Helena is quite nice.

I don't like names that are spelled different to the more common way. So I like Lucy but Lucie makes my teeth itch, same with Molly/Mollie, Katy/Katie, Amy/Amie, Jack/Jak, James/Jaymes etc. I'm pretty sure they must spend a lifetime correcting the spelling when it's different to what is expected.
I also don't like names that are female versions of male names so Toni,Terri, Lesley, Michaela although I like Philippa and Georgina.

superbagpuss · 04/01/2014 08:45

Craig - sets my teeth on edge
surnames as first names (Ryan, Dexter and the ilk)
crystal, diamond and names like that

double barrelled names, especially for boys - why would you do that

sorry if I've offended anyone

Nataleejah · 04/01/2014 09:17

Simon -- a bully boy who abused me. I still want to kill him

MrsPatMustard · 04/01/2014 12:41

Nicholas - I just hate the sound of the word. I imagine a Nicholas to be being someone who tucks their shirt into underpants and has trouser legs flapping three inches above their ankles.

SuperScrimper · 04/01/2014 15:39

Louis. I hate HATE the Louie pronounciation. It sounds so horrifically wet.

Lewis I don't mind at all Grin

talulahbelle · 04/01/2014 15:41

Ruth. I've known two, both complete bitches in different ways.

oldspeckledtam · 04/01/2014 18:50

Chad. It makes me cringe. It's so harsh sounding!

JumpingJackSprat · 04/01/2014 19:04

I hate lewis but I like louie/louis but you're right it does sound a bit wet! I also dislike Charlotte.

Rebecca and jessica. Hate the sound KUH
most very popular names are quite soft sounding.

RVPisnomore · 04/01/2014 19:12

Annette is a shocking name and so dullllllll.

Chottie · 04/01/2014 19:15

Just watching TV and there is an adult woman called 'Katie Jo'........

badtime · 04/01/2014 19:20

I really dislike Eleanor but like Elinor. I like Robin but can't stand Robyn.
I think I just dislike the unnecessary faffing.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 04/01/2014 19:22

Chottie oh dear, Katie-Jo is terrible..... but is it in fact "irrational" not to like it? It's so twee it's sick-making.

Dollydishus · 04/01/2014 19:28

Annette, Nanette, Nancy, Nina, Neil. All too nasal.

Samantha.

Debbie.

Augustwedding · 04/01/2014 19:30

I love Kate but don t like Katy or Katherine!

Dollydishus · 04/01/2014 19:30

Should add I know people called these names and they are very nice! But I feel sorry for them with these names.

Except Samantha. She deserves everything that coming to her.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 04/01/2014 19:36

What's this all about? No one has asked your opinion on any of these names. Sounds a bit like primary school bullying

Dollydishus · 04/01/2014 19:46

Apple...that's the thing...it's an irrational dislike that we are all acknowledging. It's not like we are going to actually say that to anyone with those names.

My own RL name has already been mentioned as someone else's irrational dislike...I'm not feeling bullied by that.

I think it's just a lighthearted thread. ..

looki · 04/01/2014 20:12

I kind of agree with Apple and I regret starting the thread :-( I started it because I don't like the name Katie but like Kate and they are essentially the same name so it's completely irrational to like one and not the other.

I really didn't mean the thread to become one where certain names are slated :-(

TheBunsOfPanettone · 04/01/2014 20:15

Apple this isn't bullying; names don't have feelings. My own given name, which I like very much, has been implicated in this thread because it ends in "ine". My name isn't hurt and neither am I. It's just the preference of the poster in question, and is quite irrational, along with the dislikes which I have expressed here.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 04/01/2014 20:22

looki don't worry about the thread, the clue is in the word "irrational". If you had been asking something along the lines of what names people find "posh" or "chavvy" then maybe there'd be a problem but you weren't.

Dollydishus · 04/01/2014 20:25

And just for clarity...I don't actually know anyone called Samantha! Well I did 40 years ago at primary school and I'm sure she's grown up to be a very nice woman.
