My friends think the name Harris is posh. What do you all think?

I like the name. Not sure I'd call it posh however.

sleepingbeautiful · 31/12/2013 06:50

Yes, sorry, just makes me think of the slang for arse. Not posh, just normal in Scotland with rude connotations in some other places.

oh no! this is my favourite name if DC2 is a boy. DH thinks it's posh but I think it's a good Scottish name!

cheesypastaplease · 31/12/2013 09:34

I don't think it's posh, or rough. I'm in Scotland so there is a few of them around, it's very nice.

bumblebeebzz · 31/12/2013 10:07

I'm in Scotland too so maybe that's it, I think it's just a nice name.
names are perceived differently in different areas.

highlandbird · 31/12/2013 10:11

Don't think of it as posh or 'chav' and had no idea about any rude connotations! I just think its a lovely Scottish boys name, know of one and it was on my list....quite glad I didn't use it after seeing the replies on here Sad

highlandbird · 31/12/2013 10:12

Oh and I'm in Scotland too if that makes a difference, I would put it in the same category as Lewis, Iona, Arran etc all nice normal names after Scottish Islands.

Quangle · 31/12/2013 10:16

Immediately thought of 'shove it up your 'arris" too. Even now that I've read the derivation of it (thanks badtime) I would still think of arse! Def not posh.

Theonlyoneiknow · 31/12/2013 10:21

I agree, it is in the same category as Lewis, Iona etc. I really wouldn't let a handful of strangers here put you off if you love a name. It is a lovely Scottish boys name. The island is really beautiful too so I have no idea why it is perceived as anything else (aside from the slang connotations above)

GlaikitInAPearTree · 31/12/2013 10:27

If your surname is chumley-Browne-hetherington-smythe-Mountbatten, then yes posh.

If not it's a pretty standard name round here (Scotland) neither posh nor chav(seriously where are all the chavvy Harrises)

If you like it go for it. Ds is Blair, as in Gaelic for from the land. Notw to do with tony or Lionel, which got some Hmm from the boards here.

bumblebeebzz · 31/12/2013 11:10

I'm glad all the Scottish people have came out and reassured me!

Boulders · 31/12/2013 13:53

Haris is also an Islamic name, not posh of chav. Don't think that Arabic names are divided into upper/lower class names.

GlaikitInAPearTree · 31/12/2013 14:32

Mn would manage to Boulders! Wink

Grim. Not a first name and not posh!

KrabbyPatty · 31/12/2013 14:35

It's the opposite of posh.

GlaikitInAPearTree · 31/12/2013 14:43

Can I point put there are posters on this thread who have said their DS is called Harris. Being down right rude is uncalled for.

Harris is a name in Scotland, if you are narrow minded enough to think the world of naming babies revolves around middle England then I feel sorry for you.

SS3J · 31/12/2013 15:10

I don't think it's posh, it makes me think of the island, which is a good thing :-)

Theonlyoneiknow · 31/12/2013 15:45

Well said glaikit !!

Same thing happened (only worse IMHO) on the Kyle thread (my DS's name)

Whiskersjim · 31/12/2013 16:06

Well thanks for the comments all!!

My 7 month son is actually called Harris!! I was asking because my friends were teasing me that our boys name is posh. I don't care whether it is or not - I like it - but I was just surprised that they thought it was posh and wondered what others thought. Like many posters here we are Scottish and named him after the island since it is so beautiful. I hadn't thought that people would think the name was chav-like. That is a real surprise :))

Whiskers it is a great name, with good Scottish roots.

Quangle · 31/12/2013 16:39

Opinion sought opinion given. There is a thread on here ATM about my son's name and I haven't opened it because I'm not looking for opinions and doubtless many of them will be negative.

aquashiv · 02/01/2014 01:18

Its a surname far from posh.

Solaia · 02/01/2014 10:29

It's lovely, and round here (Edinburgh) would be used by folks from all backgrounds.

Also there is a strong tradition here in Scotland of using both place names and surnames as first names. It's not something reserved to 'chavs' Confused I'm not sure why there is such a hatred of this tradition on MN but I really like places and surnames, especially on wee boys.
