Help me name DC3 - mixed race

orangestripe · 29/12/2013 22:27

I'm 30 weeks pregnant with DC3. This will be a girl, we have 2 boys already. DH is British Indian, I am White British (or whatever you call it).

Our 2 DSs have Indian first names with Classic English Middle names.

Struggling to find a girl's name that we both like. Started off looking at Indian names but are now just looking at everything since it's getting closer to needing a name.

Any inspiration greatly appreciated!

Mum suggested Maya today and I know it got loads of suggestions on this thread, so I've come back on to ask how people would pronounce it.

I would say May-a

NadiaWadia · 08/01/2014 17:16

Maya I would pronounce to rhyme with 'fire' and I think that most people would. Also (I think recently) a few people seem to think it could be to rhyme with 'layer'. But they are wrong!

orange I thought you said there was already a Maya in the family?

orangestripe · 08/01/2014 17:37

Nadia yes, well there is. But they pronounce it M-eye-a, (as noits says, rhymes with fire). Whereas my Mum said today, ooh what about Maya (she made it rhyme with layer).

I told her lots of people pronounce that name as M-eye-a but then I thought I'd do a straw poll on here to see how many.

I really like May and also Maisie and I thought it would tie in with me using those names too.

I quite like M-eye-a but I prefer M-ay-a because I like May/Maisie as NN.

But I wouldn't want DD going through life saying, actually it's when people use the other pronunciation.

I'm perhaps over thinking now - will blame the 31 weeks hormones.

Found loads of threads about this actually (eg this one).

I think it's too hassly to go through life having to "correct" people (using speech marks since it would seem rhyming with layer is not strictly correct but it would be correct for her because that's what we'd call her).

Thanks for the other ideas everyone. Please do keep them coming if you think of any more.

Well in your case I would imagine the Indian side of the family would all assume "Maya" rhymes with "fire". So that would probably cause even more misunderstandings than are usual for anyone choosing the other possible pronunciation?

NadiaWadia · 08/01/2014 19:31

Unless you used the 'Maia' spelling, but it seems unclear from the thread you linked to just how most people would pronounce that? Confused

orangestripe · 08/01/2014 20:09

Yeah I think it's a minefield unless you're going to rhyme it with fire. I'm going to have to walk away from that name now (shame) since it's a close cousin who shares the name. I mean, DD of DH's cousin.

Hm.

I'll revisit the list here (and the ones sent by my mum and mother-in-law) and start again.

There are also tons of Maya's already.

orangestripe · 17/01/2014 23:22

Still haven't settled on one that we want to go for. Any other input? 33 wks now so there's still time.

my half asian half white dd is called Ianthe.

MyBaby1day · 18/01/2014 07:56

How about India??, am I a genius or what? Grin. I am half Asian, half white and have an Arabic first name and traditionally English middle name.

confusedtiya · 18/01/2014 10:06

Riyanshi

MsJupiterJones · 18/01/2014 12:20

I knew an Ayesha at school, always thought it was the most beautiful name.

Also knew a Radhika and a Sajita, both lovely names.

orangestripe · 19/01/2014 21:39

MyBaby - that's what we've done with our 2 boys (except sanscrit and v traditional English). Would like to do that with DD but just can't find a name we both really like.

Thanks for the other ideas everyone. Still not found the right one. Am also trawling websites. On mat leave as of end of this month so will have more time to peruse.

Any more ideas?

Crossover names like Nadia, Zara and Nina are nice but I think Anjali is gorgeous!

NadiaWadia · 20/01/2014 09:47

A little girl at nursery with DD was called Anoushri, (I think that's the spelling) which I thought was very pretty. A more Western version would be Anoushka.

She knows someone else called Roshni. Also a Roshnika.

Of course there's Priya and Priyanka, which are both very popular I think.

Anjuli?
Anandi?

I think I have run out of names which could be Western as well as Indian.

CakePunch · 20/01/2014 09:54

Nyla (not sure if that's the spelling)
