Hi all, I have a wonderful friend (non-mumsneter) who's due in just a couple of weeks and she's completely stumped on names for a boy. Her eldest is Sam and she loves the name Jack but is worried by just how popular it is at the moment. Can you think of anything in a similar vein? Thanks.

IMHO I don't think she should be worried about the popularity of a name. I think Jack is a fab name and I don't know anyone (of any age!) who is called Jack!

Pancakeflipper · 13/12/2013 13:24

I hear this is a popular name but there's not 1 Jack at our primary school. Now Harry, Joe, Thomas and Ben - got a few of them..

My granddad was a Jack but I don't know any kids called Jack.

How about Max or Ted as alternatives?

I have a 12 month old jack. I don't know of any others his age so not that popular IMO.

I also like Arthur and Henry

oopsadaisyme · 13/12/2013 14:20

Charlie, Jake, Josh??

jackandjilly oooo, I love Arthur and Henry x George? x

NauseousKitty · 13/12/2013 14:23

I can understand her worry over Jack - I know five little boys under four with that name and another on the way! It is a lovely name though and if she likes it, then maybe go for it?

How about: Oliver, Max, Harry, Jonah, Jacob, Dylan, William or Theo?

Artandco · 13/12/2013 14:26

My Jack is 19 now and there were quite a few his age. There are only two in dd's average size primary though.
What about Ben, Tom or Joe.

oopsadaisyme · 13/12/2013 16:09

Have to say also, no Jacks in my DS2's class either, and really love the name, think she should stick with Jack if she likes it, I do!

I know several older jacks (teens or older) but no young ones.
Jack is my absolute favourite boys name and I plan on calling a son that regardless of its popularity.

peachypips · 13/12/2013 21:43

I have a Charlie- this is currently No 2 in popularity. However, I don't know ANY other children with the name!

I think it really is regional. Of course as he gets older and moves away he may be greeted with a flood of Charlies!

My advice would be that if she really truly loves Jack, then have it. I think it's had its peak in popularity.

Jake, Zack, Luke

I know a couple of little Jacks, a Jaxon (groan) and a couple of little Jakes, but that's not loads.
How about: Evan, Ewan, Mason, Rory, Iain, Cory, Isaac, Zach, Blake, Jared, Josh, Ethan, Alfie, Freddie, Toby, Dylan, Lewis, Declan

Tomkat79 · 18/12/2013 17:09

I have a 7 yo Jack and he's the only one in his year group. Such a lovely name, really suits a cheeky lil lad x

Mignonette · 18/12/2013 17:11

I have a Jack who is a grown man and the name really suits him.

It is popular because it is a cool name for boys and men.

Simple.

TheFutureMrsB · 18/12/2013 17:49

I have a Jack and he is the only one in his school :)
