DD is Matilda and we call her Hilda sometimes, even though she isn't Mathilda (I actually prefer the 2nd spelling now). We also call her Maude and any number of other names. But as a stand alone.... Not so much.

We avoided using any family names as DHs beloved Nana Hilda expected hers to be included - over my dead body - DH agreed too

My lovely Grandma was called Hilda, and she absolutely loathed her name. She hated it so much that she asked her friends to call her Hilary. I never really understood why she didn't use her middle name.

I would have to support her and say no, don't use it. She would have been horrified if we'd tried to name one of our DDs after her!

It's old lady like. I wouldn't. But then, I wouldn't use Mabel, Ada, Elsie or any other old lady name. Sorry.

DP loathed it too. I get the old lady association but it's a gentle name to me.

I think it will come back - Tilda, Matilda and Gilda are all fine, and it will be too. It is an 'old lady' name, bu that in itself isn't a problem: there are a lot of lovely grannies/aunties which give positive associations.

Corrie characters do, of course have an impact (would anyone really have an Audrey, Gail, Deirdre, Bet, Hayley, Vera, Ivy etc?).

See I find it a hard/harsh name...funny isn't it?!

And although Ivy is 'old lady' like, I find it is less so than Hilda.

May used to be a bit old gal, but the different spellings have made it less so imo.

I think it is a 'gentle' name too. I associate it with a light grey-lilac colour.
