Is it irredeemable?

Yes and its the name of my most loved relation.

JanePurdy · 09/12/2013 23:18

But I love it so!

Take it from someone how knows she will be called 'Ild.

sonlypuppyfat · 09/12/2013 23:20

Even who knows!!

Beamur · 09/12/2013 23:22

Margaret Thatchers middle name too.
Personally, I wouldn't.

DialsMavis · 09/12/2013 23:24

DD is Matilda and we call her Hilda sometimes, even though she isn't Mathilda (I actually prefer the 2nd spelling now). We also call her Maude and any number of other names. But as a stand alone.... Not so much.

Rockinhippy · 09/12/2013 23:27

No, just NOOOooooooooooOOO !!

We avoided using any family names as DHs beloved Nana Hilda expected hers to be included - over my dead body - DH agreed too

Beamur · 09/12/2013 23:29

Now, that's a good idea if you really love it - Mathilda. Hidden within!

manicinsomniac · 09/12/2013 23:54

I think it's ugly. Sorry.

Primrose123 · 10/12/2013 00:06

My lovely Grandma was called Hilda, and she absolutely loathed her name. She hated it so much that she asked her friends to call her Hilary. I never really understood why she didn't use her middle name.

I would have to support her and say no, don't use it. She would have been horrified if we'd tried to name one of our DDs after her!

SoloXantiaClaws · 10/12/2013 00:11

Ogden.

It's old lady like. I wouldn't. But then, I wouldn't use Mabel, Ada, Elsie or any other old lady name. Sorry.

mathanxiety · 10/12/2013 06:14

I love it.

I love Brunhilde and Mathilda/Matilda too.

JanePurdy · 10/12/2013 06:40

DP loathed it too. I get the old lady association but it's a gentle name to me.

scaevola · 10/12/2013 06:49

I think it will come back - Tilda, Matilda and Gilda are all fine, and it will be too. It is an 'old lady' name, bu that in itself isn't a problem: there are a lot of lovely grannies/aunties which give positive associations.

Corrie characters do, of course have an impact (would anyone really have an Audrey, Gail, Deirdre, Bet, Hayley, Vera, Ivy etc?).

RalphRecklessCardew · 10/12/2013 07:34

Awful. Hilary's a winner though.

DoItTooBabyJesus · 10/12/2013 07:42

I really really like it!

capercaillie · 10/12/2013 08:05

I like it. Also had a grandmother called Hilda. Needs to
Make a comeback I think.

SoloXantiaClaws · 10/12/2013 09:29

See I find it a hard/harsh name...funny isn't it?!

And although Ivy is 'old lady' like, I find it is less so than Hilda.

May used to be a bit old gal, but the different spellings have made it less so imo.

NomDeClavier · 10/12/2013 09:43

Hilde? Less of the da sound at the end which I agree also makes it sound quite harsh.

Wincher · 10/12/2013 09:45

I know a new baby Hilda...

CarryOnDancing · 10/12/2013 09:51

I'd much prefer to meet a little Hilda then any of the current "trend" names.
It's a winner for me!

JanePurdy · 10/12/2013 19:50

I'm keeping it on the list!

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 10/12/2013 20:04

I think it is a 'gentle' name too. I associate it with a light grey-lilac colour.

Onesleeptillwembley · 10/12/2013 20:13

It's an ugly name.

PheasantPlucker · 10/12/2013 20:15

I really like Hilda - and it is the name of my lovely Godmother
