Honestly...we don't like ANYTHING (boys name)

Well, we've got 5 weeks to go and DH and I are still unable to agree on a dreaded boy's name. We had a shortlist for girl's in about twenty minutes...hnow can it be this hard?

There is very little overlap in the names we individually like. I like sensible, strong names (with the occasional odd one thrown in for good measure), DH likes the quirky ones and clearly imagines our child to be going down the path of rock and roll stardom. I, on the other hand, don't think a child will thank me for calling it Castro when he walks into a meeting at work 25 years from now.

My list:
Elliott
Gus
Toby
Ryan (but less so as our surname beings with an R and I'm not sure where people stand on alliteration!)
Evan

DH list
Hunter
Castro
Eli
Patrick (curve ball - but not a fan)

Help! Seriously, help us! Every time we try and discuss this we give up as we're so "stuck" on the names we already have in our heads.

The only criteria we agree on is that the name should be instantly pronouncable by sight.

Elliot

Indianajonesismyhero · 09/12/2013 12:21

Millymollymandymax: WHY wouldn't registrar let you have the name you picked?? When I think some of the corkers that appear on my class lists, including misspellings like Racheal and Micheal, plus also at least one Issac, I wonder where they do draw the line... I'm dying to know what reason they gave!

OP: Evan is quite rock star, as everyone told me when mine (now 6) came along. think they were referring to Evan Dando (not my inspiration, but still...)

BunnyMama · 09/12/2013 12:25

Evan or Elliott are both great IMO

IsabellaRockerfeller · 09/12/2013 12:28

We have an Evan, I still really love the name. It's simple, quite cool and you don't meet many of them!

Just in case we like similar names, the other ones on our list were:

Jake
Joel
Keir
Nye
Seth
Eli/Elijah
Rafa
Linus
Soren
Nate

smokeandglitter · 09/12/2013 12:36

My immediate thought (like pp) was Elliot with Eli as a nn. Smile I actually really like both of those names.

sonnieboo · 09/12/2013 13:10

I like Elliott. All the Elliotts I know are either Elliott or El, Els, Elly. I personally don't think that Ee-lie is a natural shortening.

I also like Tobias, Hunter or how about Reuben, Quentin or Caspar?

Inapickle123 · 09/12/2013 13:57

Thanks for the suggestions!
DH (aka twat face) hates Gus (my favourite!) and won't consider the Elliott/Eli as nn option. Apparently, it's one or the other as the vowel sounds don't match up. I don't mind Eli but I just don't think it suits "us" -a bit too Americanised.
Love some of the suggestions but, as we're close to the last of our friends and colleagues to have kids, a lot of names are off the table.
Don't even get me started on his affinity with the name Casteo. Apparently, we can reclaim it and its due a resurgence. He shut up pretty quick when I countered with Pinochet...
I love Evan but DH is wavering as he thinks it's not quite right; a little too "clean cut".
I have expunged the rock star links til I'm blue in the face-It's clearly cool enough as Springsteen's son is called that-but he's not convinced.
No to Jude, Seth or Reuban. And a resounding no to my second favourite Rory or Ruiridh. Yet, Elvis is a genuine contender in his opinion.
I can't allow my child to go to school with a name that is going to get the living shit kicked out of him.
I just hope we have a girl so we don't have to start this discussion all over again on the ward.

i feel your pain. with our first son some of his suggestions made me seriously consider why i was married to him! but we got there in the end. id leave it on back burner and wait til hes seen you go through childbirth, if hes still pushing for elvis then (no pun intended)you are in shit!

Badvocatyuletide · 09/12/2013 14:21

Theo
Xander
Elias
Tobias
Thomas
Jeremiah
Zephaniah
Linus
Frederick
Albert

celestialsquirrels · 09/12/2013 16:59

How about Zad (short for Zadok?)

celestialsquirrels · 09/12/2013 17:00

Richard Rogers' son is Zad Rogers. Always thought it was cool...

celestialsquirrels · 09/12/2013 17:02

Love Linus, great suggestion

baskingseals · 09/12/2013 17:23

Rufus

Dominic

Leo or Leon

Fabian

Raphael

Arlo

Xavier

Jago

Conrad

Benedict

Ds2's name is your favourite, and ds1's name has been mentioned a fair bit, the above names were on my list, but not dh's.

NadiaWadia · 09/12/2013 17:46

Eli or Patrick are the nicest. Elliott is OK.

Gus sounds cool, but is not a complete name. What could it be short for?

Hunter is horrible.

roweeena · 09/12/2013 18:51

Roman

ChicksyBurtVonnugget · 09/12/2013 19:21

Gus is brilliant, Castro is pretty bad.
My husband is a muso and I've worked in the industry in the past and we've got a Sebastian and Oliver which is tame compared to friends. I give you:
Django
Violetta
Sunny
Mickey blue
Herbie
And girls called Eliot and Mickey

Oriunda · 09/12/2013 19:28

Can I offer my DS name, Cosmo? I know it's a marmite name here on mumsnet but I think is suitably cool. More serious Cosmos have included Cosmo Lang, the Archbishop of Canterbury who advised the govt on the abdication.

Mishmashofstyles · 09/12/2013 19:30

I like Eli best.

soontobeslendergirl · 09/12/2013 19:57

I like Elliot, Evan or Patrick for your lists and also like the Miles suggestion.

How about:

Sylvester
Austin
Innes
Ewan
Hayden
Emerson
Piper
Halbert (Hal)
Devon
Jasper

IsabellaRockerfeller · 09/12/2013 20:03

If he likes Castro how about Cassian, nn Cass?

Friend has a little Cass and it really suits him.

liger · 09/12/2013 20:13

I have three boys and each ended up with three names (!) partly because we are indecisive and partly because DH has three. Some on your list (s) overlap with names we have used - Evan, Hunter ( named after friends)

Some others were on out lists - Gus

So I give you

Ellis
Hal
Clark

IsleOfRight · 09/12/2013 20:19

Looking at those lists Dylan is the obvious crossover name to me

WithRedWine · 09/12/2013 21:53

Fwiw calling your son Castro is not in any way as dodgy as calling him Pinochet.

IsabellaRockerfeller · 09/12/2013 22:03

Hal is an amazing name!!!

Fridayschild · 09/12/2013 22:16

I love that you are worrying about this with five weeks before the birth and then another three months to name the little fellow. How much fun are you two going to have if you have a second son? I speak from experience on that one, children born close together means the second child gets names not "good enough" for his big brother.

I have a son whose name can be shortened to Gus. We are not cool or trendy or rock star in any way at all. Your DH may be right to reject it...
