Just curious, has anyone else made a name up?

When I was having my son my partner chose the name Theo which I wasn't too keen on as I don't particularly like Theodore so I made up Theoden although a friend has told me there is a character in lord of the rings with a name like that. Just curious to hear of any other new or very usual names?

As is Wendy

weebarra · 09/12/2013 09:51

As was Lorna, but not recently made up, obviously.

Every single name was once 'made up' and names continue to evolve and new ones are always created.

I too know a girl whose name is made up of both her parents names and not only is it a lovely sounding name but it has a great meaning too.

I'd personally prefer to be a Zirelle or a Thorin than another little Ellie or Jack because imo names have the purpose of identifying us. (I have nothing against Ellie or Jack apart from the fact that there are already thousands of children with these names out there...!)

I went to school with someone who had her dad's name with 'ia' added into the end, like (but not) Johnia, for example.

sonnieboo · 09/12/2013 13:19

Like Nigella Lawson (her dad was Nigel)!

Yellowcake- am so curious as to what your son's name is, as mine has a relatively underused biblical name which makes people do a double take, too...

Does it begin with A by any chance?

RightInTheKisser · 09/12/2013 13:33

I have met a little Ianetta. Dad called Ian.

I know a Katanya too.

peppinagiro · 09/12/2013 20:20

I once knew someone with a made-up Welsh name, which was somehow an amalgamation of his parents' names. He was called Eiddan (pronounced Ay-than - hard 'th' like in the word 'than')

JanePurdy · 09/12/2013 20:20

I know someone who is named after her dad's football team with -Ina on the end Hmm

MiracleOntheM4 · 09/12/2013 20:47
Shock

Evertonia?

JanePurdy · 09/12/2013 21:08

Not that one, but basically yes!

JenniferClarissa · 09/12/2013 22:19

Nigella is a plant, also known as love-in-a-mist. The seeds are used in cooking.

TalkativeJim · 09/12/2013 23:54

I wonder what would be the worst one you could make up?

I go for Fruntog (girl)

and Blargney (boy)

NomDeClavier · 10/12/2013 10:07

Avelynne I would guess to be an Anglicised variant of Aveline which does exist.

I know someone with a made up name and I think it's awful. So does she so she uses her (very sensible) middle name. Her parents were very disappointed Grin

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18270547 this article is very interesting on the Cubans making up new names as a creative outlet in a dictatorship.

My favourite is Usnavi (us navy) !

DingDongUriGelleryOnHigh · 10/12/2013 15:07

Aren't the Jayden/Kayden/Brayden names made up? I guess all names are really, just some are older than others.

JanePurdy · 10/12/2013 15:31

You could get away with Albion (west brom) for a boy.

singaporeswing · 12/12/2013 05:36

Crewe Alexandra, Northwich Victoria.

Ready made for you, TalkativeJim Grin
