Baby names

Just curious, has anyone else made a name up?

When I was having my son my partner chose the name Theo which I wasn't too keen on as I don't particularly like Theodore so I made up Theoden although a friend has told me there is a character in lord of the rings with a name like that. Just curious to hear of any other new or very usual names?

I've met quite a few people with made up names and usually they just don't work (for me).

Rossolani
Zirelle
Nathuter (parents couldn't choose between Nathan and Hunter, so decided on this gem) Xmas Shock

I would read that last one as Nuthater all the time DXBMermaid.

DD1's name is a bit made up. It's a bit like a real name though, and the shortened version we use all the time is real. It's just we liked a name but the spelling was tricky.

I like the fact that in this country we can make up names. Though obviously there is a possibility of abuse of that power. But one person's abuse is another's wonderful individual name, so who's to say really? Wink

A friend from school made up a name completely for her son. I generally don't understand this as a practice but his name is lovely and suits him and them perfectly.

I also know a family who use names but choose unique spellings so they have a Murfee, Riio and a Mylea. I don't understand this as a practice either but they seem happy. Grin

i know someone who wanted to call their baby Marley after Bob, if it was a boy, but it was a girl. so they changed the y to ee and added I to the beginning = Imarlee.

Lovely!

Ds name was made up from a combination of two names dh and I liked,
Fintan and Caleb.
However, it turned out it is actually a Gaelic name in it's own right.

My childminder made up the names for her three children, only to find that they were all 'real' names and each child shared their name with another at school. So not only did they have names that will probably be misspelled and mispronounced all their lives, they don't even have the 'unique' status aimed for. Can you tell I'm not keen on making up names Grin

A friend's dad is a writer, and her name is the name of the princess in the first book he had published. It's made up but sounds like a real name.

Every time I see a reference to the Twilight series baby Renesmee, I think it's pronounced REEN-Smee, and crack up. Mind you, it's godawful even pronounced Renn-Esmay, which is how I assume it's intended to be said...? Rather than a beautiful, otherworldly vampire baby, it sounds like a country and western karaoke singer in a ratty Dolly Parton wig!

I have a made up name - well my mum purposefully misspelled another name so that it would have a different pronunciation and what she thought would be better nicknames/abbreviations.

It had annoyed me my whole life. Not quite enough to resort to deed poll but annoyed none the less. I'm way too easy to find on google despite having a very behind the scenes job and not being remotely famous or interesting. Also every conversation with a new person seems to start by them saying "that's an interesting name, where's it from?" Which is pretty boring/ embarassing when the answer is just that my mum got a bit creative. Sometimes I just lie and say "It's French" or Hebrew or American or whatever just to depersonalise it.

I would never inflict the same on my child. There are so many real rare and beautiful names out there already.

all names are made up, so no reason why new combinations should not be tried out!
