I am expecting our second ds next year and I think finally we have narrowed down name choice to Christopher David or Jonathan David. Surname begins with G. Which do you think sounds best/ do you like best?

My bro is Jonathan and our surname begins with G! Jonathan and David were best friends in the bible so that is a great association. My brother was often called Jon once he became a teenager. I still like Jonathan as it is an underused classic. The same could be said for Christopher although I'm not so keen on Chris as a nn - not as strong a sound as Jon.

SS3J · 06/12/2013 12:38

They are both good names. I think you should decide based on whether you prefer Chris or Jon, as both are pretty inevitable shortenings!

MummyBeerestCupOfCheerest · 06/12/2013 12:40

I really like Christopher David

DirtyWeeRascal · 06/12/2013 12:43

Good name choices, we had the same top two! We chose Christopher in the end and love it.

Butterytoast · 06/12/2013 12:49

I think my favourite is Christopher but I still can't get Jonathan out of my head. Ds1 is Matthew if that has any bearing?

Think I prefer Jonathan to Christopher but Chris to Jonny!!!!

Both are nice though and go well with Matthew.

ButEmilylovedhim · 06/12/2013 17:44

I really like Jonathan. Would have been a frontrunner for dc2 but then we had a girl! But Christopher is really nice too. I'm no help!

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 06/12/2013 17:49

I love Christopher but would use 'Kit' as a nn

HoneyandRum · 06/12/2013 18:07

I find Kit a bit wet. Are there no other nns for Christopher? Christy in Ireland but don't think that would fly in the UK too feminine.

Lurleene · 06/12/2013 18:10

I know a Christopher who is known as Toph ( sounds like Loaf with a T), or Topher. Not quite as classic as Chris though.

cupcakeicing · 06/12/2013 18:11

Topher is used as an nn here in Scotland sometimes.
Jonathan is lovely too.

Allalonenow · 06/12/2013 18:18

I like Jonathan best.
Christopher is OK, but I don't like the various nn for it, and Kit is quite popular as a stand alone name at the moment, which would put me off using Christopher.

bundaberg · 06/12/2013 18:22

i like Jonathan best :)

I prefer David Jonathon.
I like Christopher (nn Kit) better than Jonathon, but not with David, for some reason.

Bakingtins · 06/12/2013 20:40

Jonathan.

It does have the same meaning as Matthew "gift of God", not sure if that's a positive or a negative thing (or irrelevant).

TheBunsOfPanettone · 06/12/2013 22:15

Prefer Jonathan David.

Amy106 · 06/12/2013 22:24

They are both really good "stand the test of time" names but I like Christopher David slightly better.

TodaysAGoodDay · 06/12/2013 22:51

My brother is Christopher David, so I'm a bit biased!
Great choice.

Butterytoast · 06/12/2013 22:56

I think the spread of this thread represents my mind!!! I like both and no different days have different preferences. David will def be a middle name and an leaning towards Christopher at the moment as I like the way it sounds better but I think I prefer the nn Jon/Johnny to Chris.... I'm talking myself round in a circle!!

Both are lovely. I think leave it for now and you will know when you look at your baby what suits him.

Also love Matthew!

NoComet · 06/12/2013 23:02

Christopher, I find Jonathon difficult to spell.

Ilovekittyelise · 06/12/2013 23:10

i prefer jonathan, especially when jon vs chris card is played. toph and topher sound like toss and tosser; i think if you are going to use a nn it has to be something that passes as an actual name not just for close family to use. ie you dont turn up on your first day of your new job and introduce yourself as topher, unless your new job is treasurer of the tuck shop at your boarfing school.

Ilovekittyelise · 06/12/2013 23:10

boarding school.

MarianForrester · 06/12/2013 23:11

Christopher. Much nicer name imo
