Just wondering what names are popular where you live (please say where) ?

I am in NE Scotland, names that are especially popular (in babies and younger children) are:

Harris
Hamish
Campbell
Calum
Connor
Mac

Sophie
Megan
Emily
Isla
Evie
Poppy

But then, my kids have fairly 'unpopular' names, outside the top 100 and by definition not everyone will love them. We do, though Smile.

BobaFetaCheese · 28/11/2013 13:05

Same area as Poppydaisy, similar names although there is added;

Riley
Finn/finnely/finnigan (I can't understand the popularity, I just think fish body part)
Henry

Olivia
Ella/Elle (-Mae)
Poppy
Lily

George (from way last year)
Cillian
Ryan
Ethan
Ben
Luke

Cara
Niamh
Amy
Jessica
Astrid
Aoife
Sophie

I'm in Belfast. My daughters have very popular names elsewhere, but strangely the one that is most popular (Olivia), she's the only one we know & she is already in school. Whereas my youngests name is quite well liked on MN but I'm tripping over them here Smile

Arabesque1 · 28/11/2013 13:20

BTW I'm surprised Orla is so popular in England. It's considered quite a dated name in Ireland.

cloggal · 28/11/2013 13:28

Seems to be popular in Scotland too arabesque, though the ones I know are all Irish (and different ages!)

Mainly in the north though.

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/11/2013 14:23

I have only ever met two other people with my name. I havent heard of anyone else either with my name. I like it being uncommon but not unusual.

I hope i have achieved this too with DD's name, but i know i havent with DS's name Sad, due to à very stubborn DP!

I meant to add - Arthur. I know 5 Arthurs under 1 - all different backgrounds. The next oldest Arthur I know is in his 40s and then I know one in his 70s (Belfast)

Mattissy · 28/11/2013 15:12

My dd has one of the popular names listed above, in my defence it only became popular afterwards, she's 8 now and I don't know any older than her but literally dozens younger than her, lol, I led the way!

Tbf, you really don't give the popularity of their names a moments thought after they're out of nursery, lol

My ds has a classic name, there's a regular supply of them but it's never overused.

Mattissy · 28/11/2013 15:14

Oh yes, forgot this bit..,

NE

Evie/Eve/Ava etc
Lily
Emily
Lily
Macy

Joshua
Alfie
Oliver
Sam
Ben

hawkmcqueen · 28/11/2013 15:24

Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones and lack of sleep as DS has croup but this is the first time the 'smug mums' have annoyed me on a naming thread. You are a clever lot picking non popular names, hooray. Oh no, actually your comments... yawn. Now please do carry on, rant over ;-)

Wannabestepfordwife · 28/11/2013 15:34

hawk I don't think anyone is trying to be offensive I think people are just saying what names are popular in their area one of the ones on my list is dd's mn it's a lovely name so I can see why it's popular

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/11/2013 15:38

Hawk i am far from being a smug mum! As I said, for the most part these names are popular because they are nice.

According to many pósters my DS has à horribly chavvy name that is greatly disliked on these boards. It isnt a nice feeling knowing your beautiful child has à name disliked by so many! This thread was just out if interest to see if different names were popular in different parte of the UK.

I can sympathise with croup. My DD was admitted to hospital via ambulance earlier this year.

hawkmcqueen · 28/11/2013 15:50

Hi Theonlyone it was the 'yawn' comments that rubbed me up the wrong way by a couple of posters, not the actual thread. I only decided to take offence as my daughter's name is a yawn inducing name by all accounts. I don't usually take offence as her name is always mentioned as being too popular. I just chose to take offence today. I have also taken offence at many other minor thorns today, in fact at mostly everything ;-)

wigglesrock · 28/11/2013 15:50

hawk I said my 3 all have very popular names but it's strange how some names are so regional. I hope you get a better nights sleep, it's shite when you're so knackered.

wigglesrock · 28/11/2013 15:53

I'm so important I had to say it twice Blush . I have an Olivia, and have broken every MN naming rule ever by ..... wait for it ..... all my dds names end in the same letter

hawkmcqueen · 28/11/2013 15:55

Thanks Wigglesrock, I'm gonna stay away from the keyboard for the rest of the day and ponder how the heck I'm gonna cope with a new born in January :-/ So signing off for now and skulking away!

Wannabestepfordwife · 28/11/2013 15:55

Is that really a thing wiggles?

I think I will be even worse dp and dd have the same first initial and if we have a ds at some point so will he

wigglesrock · 28/11/2013 16:11

I'd never even thought about it until some eejits on a thread mentioned it & the letter is A, so that makes it doubly worse Smile . My eldest dd & my husband also have the same initial, I didn't even think about it when I was picking names, I also commited the cardinal sin of not checking if initials spell anything out. Thankfully we are clear on that score Hmm . I also spell dd1s name the "foreign" way.

I love a good old chat about names but sometimes the wankometer on MN is just set too high for me.

The last month or so of pregnancy is harder than the newborn stage imo. I hope you get some rest & dc is on the mend.

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/11/2013 16:29

I agree, i has never heard of DS name being chavvy till here, i didnt even think of googling to see if it was a chavvy name before we called him it ! I have heard it called a naughty boy name too.

My DD and DP have the same initial and DS and DD have similar sounding names. So i score low on three things! *Wink

Croup is nasty hope your DC gets better soon.

Just remembered Logan is also really popular here.

I Found the doc that lists the top ten names in each region for scotland. Was really interesting as there are quite à few différences

I have a K name , ultimate MN sin . Orla veers from being suggested on every thread , meh and old fashioned. Mine is simply lovely.

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/11/2013 21:59

I only know one Orla.

DS's name begins with à K !
