Thingymajigs · 28/11/2013 09:10

East midlands-
Leo, Oliver, Harry, Zachary.
Not sure about girls.

Every other baby boy seems to be called Leo but that's possibly just because it's the name I hear shouted out most often in town by irritated mums. It's put me off the name for ds3.
For 10 year olds the most popular boys name by miles is Alexander.

WoollyNortherner · 28/11/2013 09:17

Greater Manchester.

Lily-mae
Olivia-mae
Gracie-mae
Eva-Mae
Daisy-Mae
Ruby-mae

Harrison
Oliver
Elliott
Kaden
Joshua
Jake

That's all we have around here. Everyone is called one of those name, except my dc. There are 3 Lily-Maes in my youngest's class and 3 Rubys. 2 of which are Ruby-Maes. 7 Harrisons in the school. Smh. Confused

DancingLady · 28/11/2013 09:28

What's the deal with all the -Mae names?! I don't get why you'd want to give your DD a name that loads of other kids will have...

Here (south London):
Thomas
William
Stanley

Amelia
Ella
Grace
Olivia
Isabella

Yawn...

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/11/2013 09:30

I meant to add Finlay to my list too, i know at least 4. But i do think its à nice name so obv lots of other people do too.

Do you think all these really popular names are popular because they are actually quite nice names (most of them) or for some other random reason?

My DD has à reasonably uncommon name (Cerys) but i have still met two others locally with the same name

Eve and all its variants officially full. At one stage one third of the girls in DDs class were called an Eve related name it drove me bonkers "I played with Eve, then Evie wanted to join in but the other Eve didn't. Can Eva come to tea?" Aarghgh its a nice ish name but really why so popular?!

DancingLady · 28/11/2013 12:02

Theonlyone I think they're popular because they're great names, but I've no idea why anyone would want their child to be one of three Evies/Thomases in their class/workplace. I just don't get it. My name is unusual and on that basis I gave DD an uncommon name. I have met one other woman with my name and it was really weird!

poppydaisy · 28/11/2013 13:01

I think the ONS actually publish lists of the most popular names by area!

Anyway, here in South London are loads of Eve/Evies, Ellie/Ellas, Sophies, Ollies, Harrys, Jacks, Charlies...yawn.

Names are popular because many people choose names that are 'in vogue'. They may sound nice at the time, yes. But they will sound dated as they fall out of fashioin, just as Steve, Mike, Sharon and Helen did - 'nice' names at the time but now dated.
