Can't stop thinking I have made wrong name choice for 20 week old DD

I can't get used to my DDs name and keep wondering about other names for her. It was a name both my DH and I liked, and had done for a while but really we had very few other choices as DH didn't suggest/like many others. I was always a little on the fence as it's not overly pretty but thought that was fine as I don't like frilly/fussy/cutesy type names. It also sounds quite similar to my own name and I worry that when called around the house it will be confusing - probably over thinking it! I don't think my mum likes the name either although she said it has really grown on her.

There is another name which I had discounted as it is the name of a friend of DS - I met the mum at a baby group and we see eachother fairly regularly. Now I am wondering if it really matters and I could have gone for this name.

I know I could change up to a year - how straightforward is this to do? My DH won't entertain the idea though, he thinks I am being ridiculous and have spent too long thinking about this.

Has anyone else been in this position? I don't have post natal depression which I know is often linked to this uncertainty but will I ever grow to really love the name and feel we have made the right choice. I remember having these doubts with my son's name (but not as bad as this) but now he is 3 I absolutely adore his name and couldn't imagine wanting to call him anything else.

Sorry for the long post, just helped to get it all written down - DH won't listen or discuss it with me.

Erin is a much prettier name than Imogen if you ask me!

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 04/11/2013 16:05

Erin is a lovely name. I wish I had called ds1 Evan hes 16 now and has an unusual name but not evan that ii really wanted. Fwiw he hates both names and wishes he was jame/Josh/ben or anything else 'normal'

DuchessFanny · 04/11/2013 16:14

I was going to call my third Erin, but turned out it was a boy ! Grin
Still love the name and it is much nicer than Imogen IMO

If it's any consolation after my first DS I was in a real wobble for a few weeks about whether we'd chosen the right name for him, but I'm sooo glad we did, he's really grown into it, we all love it and I couldn't imagine him as the alternative we had picked .

elcranko · 04/11/2013 16:42

Erin is a gorgeous name!

Rosencrantz · 04/11/2013 20:38

LOVE Erin. I know that's not helpful!

Rosencrantz · 04/11/2013 20:39

Imogen makes me think of Page 3 girls.

SoftSheen · 04/11/2013 20:41

Erin is much nicer than Imogen, IMHO.

Graceparkhill · 04/11/2013 20:45

It's a beautiful name. I know an Erin aged 21 and you couldn't find a lovelier, kinder girl.

AlfalfaMa · 04/11/2013 20:51

I love it, but am biased because Erin is my dd1's middle name. Fwiw, I just asked her if she likes it and she said, yes she loves it :)
It's pretty without being frilly.

OnesieTwosie · 04/11/2013 20:52

Much prefer Erin. Was our choice for DD then Mumsnet put me off it! Clearly none of those posters are on here today Wink I totally wish I'd stuck with it. Keep it OP - it's a beautiful name. She'll love it.

nosleeptillbedtime · 04/11/2013 20:57

We changed our son's name and it was very easy and straightforward. Just download the form, fill it in, and send off with cheque and wait for new birth certificate! Am vvvvvvvv glad we is it as I love his name now and didn't want to go through life feeling that his name wasn't his 'real' name, iyswim. We are in Scotland, don't know if is diff in rest of uk.

CarryOnDancing · 05/11/2013 00:09

I think Erin is beautiful and Imogen is horrid. I've never understood it's popularity. There's just no warmth to it.

I'd definitely keep Erin!!!!

comeandgo · 05/11/2013 00:24

Erin is beautiful and I would use in a flash if it wasn't for my stupid surname Sad

LadyDowagerHatt · 05/11/2013 09:36

Thanks everyone for your comments, much appreciated and they have really helped.

I've come to the conclusion that unless I want an almighty battle with DH (and I don't feel strongly enough about another name to take that on) I need to grow to love her name again.

BeachBallFamily - your post was wonderful as it reminded me why I loved her name. I feel the same - I think of an Erin as full of character, down to earth, good fun, perhaps a bit cheeky! And yes I would mourn the name if I didn't use it - I have loved it since I first heard it on a friend's baby sister when I was 8 and always wanted a daughter called Erin. So it just felt right when we named her, not sure why I am having a wobble now!

And I like the Wren nickname, very cute. We already call her Erry and Perrin so I will add Wren as I think nicknames help get over the difficulty of an adult name on a tiny baby, which could be part of the problem.

Thanks again, I feel in a much better place about it now than I did yesterday morning.

I prefer Erin - it's beautiful and a bit more unusual.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 05/11/2013 10:34

Erin? Lovely name.

Made me think of the model Erin oconnor. Beautiful girl in non-Towie esque way which is far too prevalent now...

WithRedWine · 05/11/2013 10:35

Imogen always sounds snotty to me. I think it's because you can hear the word 'Image' in it - conjures up someone vain & self-obsessed.

Catchhimatwhat · 05/11/2013 10:39

Erin is my favourite name of all the ones you mentioned!

NationMcKinley · 05/11/2013 10:44

I love love love Erin: it is a timeless, beautiful and dignified name. I like Imogen too but much prefer Erin. If it's any consolation, I was a bit ambivalent about DS2's name but I love it now

Sleepy678 · 05/11/2013 20:14

I do think of that Imogen Thomas - ex big brother/page 3 girl & it has really put me off the name Imogen. It has become much more of a chavvy name because of her which is a shame as it is a pretty name. You have made the right choice sticking with Erin. It is much more classy & timeless.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 05/11/2013 22:10

Not helpful but I LOVE the name Erin. It was my top name throughout my pregnancy with DD and I really pushed for it but my DH didn't love it as much as I did. I just think it ticks every single box for what I wanted in a name...very cute and pretty for a little girl, but a good strong name for a woman.

I do love my DD's name now but I was in the playground the other day and there was a little Erin and I had a pang of 'oh I would have loved to have called DD Erin'!

My DD is Eva Charlotte Smile

FrankieAadamsMum · 06/11/2013 09:49

You can call the next Imogen :)
Erin's Gorgeous

FetaCheeny · 06/11/2013 12:35

Much prefer Erin to Imogen! beautiful name.

allyfe · 06/11/2013 12:44

This thread has made me feel all emotional. Firstly, because I understand the worry about a name. I always wonder about my daughters name (which I don't want to share because I know it isn't popular on here). But mainly because there are so many lovely Erin posts (which is a lovely name) and so OP, you are feeling better. That is when places like this are at their most wonderful. :D
