What do you think of the name Greylynn (pronounced grey-LYNN)for a girl? I've seen this name once or twice before and loved it. We will probably call her Grey for short. Also what middle names do you like for Greylynn?

Sailor screams toddlers and tiaras!

loren986 · 04/11/2013 07:58

Frankel, I know exactly what you mean about the spelling. That would get a bit tedious having to correct everyone. And I honestly didn't try to think of unique names, those are just the ones I happen to like. I mean, I don't want a different name just for the sake of being different, I just tend to like more unusual ones!

What about grailyn a spelling that doesn't look like grey Lynn?

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:02

The thing is, I chose that name because I loved that it had the word "grey" in it. Changing the spelling makes it not as appealing to me. I literally think I'm going with Grey Elizabeth Talbert. I like it!

Thank you, we like Margaret too :) I thought we'd call her Maggie, and I do often, but I'm really surprised by how many people just call her Margaret.

I think Grey Elizabeth is fine, but then again I AM American and wouldn't bat an eye. I know a little girl named Gray.

CalamityKate · 04/11/2013 08:07

If you love the ridiculous made up names so much, why not change yours by deed poll? Then you get all the attention and its kinder to your offspring.

I know that sounds harsh but I do wonder what goes through the heads of people who out of the thousands and thousands of lovely existing names, cannot find ONE they like.

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:11

But they aren't made up, it's just that I didn't realize they were so unpopular in the UK. Like Cheerful said, if this was America no one would give these names a second thought.

CheerfulYank · 04/11/2013 08:14

Well, personally...to me calling someone Gray is no different than calling someone Scarlett, really.

PoppyAmex · 04/11/2013 08:15

I'm like a crazy stalker about your DD's name Cheerful and said this before but I think it's fab.

Margaret is due a massive comeback and the nicknames are super (I love Peggy). Usually find "Rose" a bit of a filler middle name but in your case it works really well. Margaret Rose is beautiful. Smile

OP of course it's your decision but consider you might be saddling your offspring with a name that will be mocked.

EirikurNoromaour · 04/11/2013 08:15

But you aren't in America!
Honestly, Grey isn't a name. It's a colour. Calling your daughter Grey is really unfair. Please try harder to find a proper name that is in use in the UK that you like.

Before anyone accuses me of being racist/xenophobic, I think there is a big difference between people using names from their own country or cultural background that are recognisably foreign names, and a British person using an English word as a name just because other countries do. Mohammed is an acceptable name in the UK, sailor or grey really aren't.

EirikurNoromaour · 04/11/2013 08:16

Maybe cheerful, but Scarlett is a recognisable name. Sure, you could argue that Grey will become one if enough people use it but why do that to your child?

I also think Scarlett is a stupid name

CheerfulYank · 04/11/2013 08:17

Thanks Poppy, I think we made the right choice. :) I almost didn't use Rose as it is such a filler, but I never pass a rosebush without thinking of my Grandfather, who loved them. And I miss him so much!

Sorry for derailing OP!

MrPricklepants · 04/11/2013 08:17

Grey Elizabeth is a million times better than Greylynn and a bjillion times better than sailor (I don't care if it's popular in America it's a ridiculous name).
Grey is a boys name though and expect jokes about whether you've named her after 50 shades of!

GlaikitFizZombieFodder · 04/11/2013 08:18

Gray to me is a boys name, but I only know one and he is actually Graham. I actually like it and I'm usually not one for "American" names (no offence to any Americans just my preference)

CheerfulYank · 04/11/2013 08:20

I guess Eiruk. It's just that it's hard for me to put myself in a mindset where Grey is a really strange name. I think it would be better received here than Imogen tbh! Imogen is one of those names that is fine in the UK but we just don't have for some reason...like Gemma, Tamsin, etc.

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:21

But I'm not a British person using an English word. I'm an American living in England using an American name. I don't really think id be "saddling" her with a name, it's not like I want to name her Octopus or Misses Whiskerton! There are a lot of British names that would fit in another country, but that doesn't mean they aren't beautiful names.

I remember Morse, from years ago, the new pathologist arrived and introduced herself as Greyling.

I think the story was her father liked fishing. She was a very attractive character (in all ways)and an oddish name was acceptable, in a series where the lead character was embarrassed about his name.

I think whats important is the name must mean something to you, your going to spend years spelling, repeating and justifying it,whatever the name is. I have the shortest most ordinary traditional name, and people still ask me to spell it!

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:22

Cheerful you're fine! A little derailing never did anyone too much harm!

ceramicunicorn · 04/11/2013 08:23

Greylynn sounds like a baddie in Game of Thrones. Sailor is a job title.

KateCroydon · 04/11/2013 08:23

How about Elizabeth Grey Talbert? Sounds great to me.

ArbitraryUsername · 04/11/2013 08:23

The main problem with grey as a name is that it has huge connotation of dull and boring. Possibly not what you'd want people to associate with your DD.

GlaikitFizzog · 04/11/2013 08:24

But Gray can be a name, it's not made up of just a word she's picked out the dictionary, like hedgehog. Now I would say hedgehog was an awful name, but gray/grey isn't.

cookielove · 04/11/2013 08:24

Op, I love the name the Grey we were set on Greyson nn grey for our lo until I actually got pregnant then dh changed his mind. So gutted! As I love the name Grey!

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:26

Kate, I just really love Grey, that's what I want to call my daughter every day. Elizabeth is a gorgeous first name, but when I think of my daughter, her name is Grey. And I don't think the name makes the girl, I think the girl makes the name. She will be the most colorful Grey you'd ever meet!

loren986 · 04/11/2013 08:28

Cookie, if I were having a boy his name would definitely be Greyson! Great minds think alike!
